"Chen" is essentially the east Asian equivalent of "Smith". In the sense that it is extremely common. It literally is the most common surname in Taiwan. It is also the most common surname in several areas of China (not sure about the country as a whole though). So to me you just basically said "X is bad, use X instead sometimes". I agree that it is overused, but so are a bunch of other things and tbh its the rehashing of adjectives (e.g. indominable, palpable) that really gets to me. Maybe because it is normal to hear the same names used over and over irl, that it is easier to deal with.
@@ihspstanktribe Also, Chen is ludicrously common in east Asia. So if someone is looking for something like a good name to use, which isn't super common in their native land, Chen would be a very logical one for them to come across and use. (So many times you really NEED uncumbersome words for proper nouns in a work of fiction. Common names tend to be just that.)
These stories show how it should be with all life. Unfortunately greed and stupidity will keep us all in the dirt until death when a future like this is possible if not in space at least on Earth. What a waste.
@@maryadams6415 In terms of ethnicity, Taiwan and China are both essentially almost entirely composed of the Han ethnicity. Clone Chen went from captain to admiral, admiral is 4 stars 1 star is commodore. Then rear admiral is 2 stars, vice admiral is 3 stars, the full admiral 4 stars. So this A.I. jumps over the various admiral ranking. Your A.I. is dumber than a box of rocks.
No it's not! You're talking about old school Navy. This is Star Command. They can restructure the command sequence any way they want. If they had wanted to they could have made her a General just like the Air Force.
That sounds like the Royal Navy. For the USN O-7 (1 star) is 'rear admiral (lower half)', O-8 (2 stars) is 'rear admiral' (sometimes called 'rear admiral upper half'). O-9 is vice admiral and O-10 is admiral. There is also a 5 star fleet admiral rank that hasn't been used since the 40s but can still be used if needed. Food for thought: If you really look at the words used in various languages, often back in the day what we would call an "admiral" or "fleet admiral", would actually be called the same thing they used for what we would call a "general" with some addition denoting that it was on water. With very literal translations coming out as things like 'general of the ocean' or something like that. That or they would literally just be the called the same thing, such as ancient Athens was with its 'strategoi'. You can even see something similar in China right now. The full name of the CCP's navy (note not China's navy, it is an arm of the CCP itself) is the People's Liberation Army Navy, no lie.
@@michaellinnet6095 I never liked how Mass Effect tried to mix Navy and Marine ranks and rate (rank is for officers, rate is for enlisted). I won't spoil it, but the main character is much more than a midshipman by the end. In the real world, you will find the occasional story of people who just power on up the ladder of command. Maybe calling your peace ship a thunderbolt was the wrong name if the alien species understood the nuance of the language. Also arriving in a massive war ship was not the best opening to a peace overture. Like arriving to seek open peace on a nuclear tipped bomber.
The AI announced that the arrival was "2.3 light years from Confederation space". That means that, traveling at the speed of light (Warp 1) it would take 2.3 YEARS to reach Confederation space. Not a very close arrival. Why can't the bot reader pronounce Orion properly? How about agape? The printout consistently prints haul, hole, or hall, meaning hull. When the Confederation ships plan to detonate their warp cores the printout shows "work" cores. As the battle ends the printout shows 'chips' meaning ships. Really inane. Too many pronunciation errors to list here. Hopefully, AI bot readers will soon learn English properly. Next the writer should learn the promotion ladder. To go from Captain to Admiral would piss off enough in-between ranks to start a war. Excellent story debased by important details.

this is very hard to listen as the AI keeps mispronouncing the ships' AI name. just all it Arra or Aira
