Absolutely thrilled to see you enjoying this song! Surprises like this is why I like to suggest songs from series I don't see much requests for.
As the name suggests, Super Robot Wars are games involving giant mechs in a war that spans around the world and well into space. The theme belongs to the guy posing, who generally does his own thing outside both the protagonists and the main antagonists, so whenever he shows up, *nobody* is certain what he'll do. Sometimes, he'll help the good guys, sometimes he'll help the bad guys, but it's always for his own goal.
He pilots a mech called the Granzon powered by a black hole that summons other black holes as attacks. They get the same animation quality as a lot of the games' final bosses. It's just as broken as it sounds in the games.
And he's the master of audible smirks. The man radiates smug, it's incredible.
It's not actually powered by a black hole, it's powered by an "Antimatter Annihilation Engine".
Which sounds more broken? You decide!
so yeah the dark prison might be reference to said black holes being used as weapons, honestly i like almost all of the og saga;s themes including their ps2 remake counterparts

@@Cyril86 might be , i always was interested in getting more into the lore behind shu and masaki, but due to failing funds and a lack of japanese speaking skills. i never really did look deeper. But i am soon building a cybaster model kit

With trying to picture the setting, for me it's being caught in a terrible storm.
I really love how that backing violin feeds that storm vibe, which really fits given his opponents typically have a black hole of some kind tossed their way, ripping and shredding them into dust.
do you know of the degeneration cannon? because one HELL of a storm is made during it!
Super Robot Wars is a GOATED series. Absulutely wonderful OST and gameplay.
One of two intro songs that just makes you want to go run and hide when it starts playing.
And pray that Shu is on your side for a change.
Or that Masaki is on your side when he's not!
I remember in SRW OG 2 him just showing on the map made scene huge without actual battle animation
PRAISE to whoever recommended SRW BGMs, it's my favorite strategy/tactical game series every, I'm a mech fanatic/junkie. So glad you're reacting to these. Honestly I feel like you should watch the gameplay/attacks videos to get the feel for the music along with the animations, also need more context about the characters and mechs, but it's fine either way.
Also, if you're listening to SRW soundtracks, then you gotta listen to JAM Project, they literally go hand-in-hand since they make majority of the vocals as main songs of certain games in the series 🤩

Btw. The man over the BGM is Shu Shirakawa. The pilot of the most menecing mech known to SRW lore. Neo Granzon.
How powerful it is?
I suggest watch his video. Also, he has a very interesting backstory.
I also love how they have a nod towards special relativity, with Shu's quote in battle, "It might have been just a moment for you, but for us it was an eternity."
You have to admire a guy who's willing to sit there in what must feel like an endless time stop to build up a black hole, just so he can annihilate his foes with it.
It's also no surprise he's always many steps ahead of everyone else. He's got a lot of time, relatively, on his hands to think and figure it all out!
I mean, when it can just casually throw around black holes... Yea. It is kinda powerful. And I don't even understand enough physics to go into the depths of his ultimate attack the Degeneration Cannon...
Shu also eerily calm, not shouting or laughing or showing any emotional outburst in fight. It makes him more intimidating
I've been watching/playing SRW ever since I was like 1 years old love the BGM given I tent to like the slower ones ☺️❤️
VGM definitely shaped my taste. It got me to appreciate melody and emotion more than I thought I would. A lot of the music I love is incredibly cheesy now, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Super Robot Wars has some great tracks, even if you only include the original ones and not all the anime ones (the series is a mecha anime crossover strategy RPG, involving all sorts of mecha anime, from Gundam to Mazinger Z, Macross to Evangelion and more, but also including their own original characters and mechs, like this guy). Many characters, mechs or teams within the games have their own themes that play as they do their attacks... Sometimes even certain attacks have unique themes lol.
Trombe! is a fun track... As one of the most notorious tracks in the franchise (due to a programming error causing it to override even boss themes lol... Which the programmers then kept for future appearances of the character as a permanent feature), it's probably worth hearing ^_^;;... That and it's a good tune too.
But we gotta get him to react to the anime covers too. How else are us weebs going to get Jesse to indulge us?

The OGs ver is more orchestral.

I love that Shu and Granzon still too OP when playable
Neo Granzon in Alpha Gaiden was a nightmare, I am afraid to try Super Robot Wars 3 because he's there coupled with the old and dated gameplay that apparently, makes Classic Super Robot Wars becomes a headache

Wow I didn't expect you listen to SRW song, I hope you would also listen to another song from this franchise and that is a lot. And also listen to the OST by JAM project, I recommend Gong, Skill, Victory, Noah, Hagane no resistance, etc.

iirc, the original japanese title was "prisoner of darkness" but they change it to "Dark Prison" for some reason.

I feel like you kinda gotta watch the attacks in action with the music. The two are supposed to go together and are timed to work with each other. Specifically, their final attacks.

Shu is a huge jerk who pilots his big dumb black hole-powered robot and shows up just to ruin people's day. the music is great because his robot is so unbelievably overpowered until the end of the game that whenever he shows up and this plays, you know he's just going to run roughshod over everyone involved and be super, super smug and dismissive about it
