    A little history about the character and song
    The lifetime partner of Sanger Zonvolt, Elzam von Branstein is the Aloof Big Brother of Raidiese F. Branstein. He hails from the esteemed Branstein family, Happily Married and a Supreme Chef. Elzam debuts in Original Generation, but it's filled with a Good Bad Bug: due to programming errors, priority for his Leitmotif was given the highest, thus it always overrides any song, even the Final Boss. Banpresto took it as a Running Gag and incorporated this "bug" into subsequent games. Although Elzam's one of the headlining generals of the "Divine Crusaders", with the death of Bian Zoldark, he secretly aids the Earth Federation Army to fight against the invading ""Aerogaters". Following the end of the "L5 Campaign", the Earth Federation Army's offensive at defeating the Aerogaters, he and his crew of the battleship Kurogane vanishes.
    Elzam reappears in the sequel, now sporting a pair of glasses, calling himself "Ratsel Feinschmecker" (erroneously translated by Inspector Vigagi as "Mysterious Gourmet"). Once again, he and the Kurogane crew operate and support the Earth Federation Army in secret. To prove "Real Men Ride Each Other", Ratsel's new Mid-Season Upgrade received when liberating the Tesla-Leicht Institute can turn into a horse and have Sanger's own Mid-Season Upgrade mount it (no, REALLY).
    His debut was popular enough to warrant him a place in the Super Robot Wars Alpha series, despite appearing first in Original Generation as his Ratsel persona (which is also the persona's debut), though he did exist in the background of Alpha and the earlier, yet obscure Super Robot Spirits. Still, his first on-screen appearance is in Original Generation, thus he's placed in this category.
    Elzam pilots a variety of machines, such as a Guarlion and Huckebein MK III, all painted with black/red/gold colors and called "Trombe", after his black stallion. His definitive mecha is the Dynamic General Guardian "Aussenseiter" (German for "outsider", or less literally, "dark horse").
    Quite literally this song was made popular because of a bug making it into a meme known as trombe override. Also trombe means tornado

    So a fun thing about the music in the OG super robot wars games. While every character has their theme that plays during attacks, they will always play a bosses theme when they fight a boss. However, the character this belonged to was a boss that joins your party. Due to a bug, the track priority never reset to normal, so this song will literally interrupt every single boss theme in the game, even the final boss. It became s huge meme and the devs liked it so it stuck in future games, and it became part of this characters personality that he always busts into the scene and interrupts literally everything going on. There is only 1 boss theme that overrides this and it is literally a battleship with giant ass speakers playing the blue Danube waltz over the top of everyone else's music.

      A theory I had to test in Alpha 2 was "Who's theme takes override" and... they both do.
      Blue Danube will override if Trombe is playing, but then Trombe will override that if it's queued up again (through stuff like Awaken or on enemy turns).

      @@xolotltolox7626I said that, but, Trombe will override Blue Danube as well. It's a loop. Bundol's ship and Fire Bomber/Basara, maybe Mic Sounders 13, have special priority for being diagetic music.

    While I'm a bit late to the party, what you're hearing in the percussion are little flourishes specifically meant to evoke comparisons to horses. Elzam von Branstein is the character this song plays behind, and he is strongly associated with black stallions. There's a distinct alternating rhythm in the snares very specifically designed to replicate the pattern of a horse moving at a trot, and the little tambourine-shake sounds are meant to bring to mind a horse's reins being shaken. That sudden rolling triple drumbeat and the light cymbals are supposed to be the horse's rumbles and exhales.
    Amusingly, Elzam's combat style in the game can be described as that of a heavy skirmisher with excellent mobility... or in other words, a cavalry unit.

    My first experience with Trombe! is during that mission in super robot OG2 for GBA.
    The mission has super hi-tech alien federation's ace Dragon Mecha attack a technology institute while us have one robot and one airplane to protect it.
    Suddenly This mysterious guy with goggle and fake name joins in to help and manage to solo entire enemy squad including the ace without getting single hit. Later I play OG1 and he is actually a very tough boss as his dodge rate is super high.
    Trombe! is basically his favorite horse's name, and he keep calling every of his robot Trombe and paint them in Black theme. His final mecha can even transform into a big horse.

    The title "Super Robot Wars", it more refers to Super Robots... Which is technically a sub-genre of Mecha genre... They're the more giant robots fueled by pure science fiction and magic, and that have no real grounding in reality. One example that actually counts as a Super Robot that is fairly well known in the west, and isn't even an anime, is the Megazords from Power Rangers.
    Super Robot Wars being a series where they take a whole bunch of Mecha anime series (Not all of them being Super Robot ones specifically) and put them into a giant crossover in the form of a RPG Strategy game... Probably the most apt comparison to draw for the sake of explaining what the games are like would be the Fire Emblem series as most people probably know what that series is...

    Yay more SRW themes, Trombe! is a treat I tell ya. Another "version" which is the same thing but it's called "Trombe OVERRIDE" which actually have a gameplay mechanic to it. When you make your units attacks attack, it plays the BGM of the unit you set it too, but in instances where you're fighting boss units (Excluding final bosses), Trombe *OVERRIDES* their boss theme and it's amazing XD
    Again, I'm glad you're reacting to SRW music but you're a lot of the cool factor without watching the battle animations and losing a lot of context on how the BGM compliments the unit, the pilot and the animations.

    I see that others have mentioned the infamous Trombe bug, so instead I'll just comment on how a lot of old school VG music is super melodic. This is due, in large part, to practical limitations: until the Playstation/N64 era, games didn't have the ability to play more than a handful of notes at a time, maybe enough for a whole chord plus rhythm backing. This meant that any songs they put into the game had to focus on the barest of essentials... which in turn meant having a strong central melody to carry everything. That, in turn, made a lot of that early VGM super memorable, because a strong melody is core to making a song memorable.
    As tech evolved, we got more complex harmonies, even full choral and orchestral backing, but that drew the focus away from that super melodic style of VGM writing. It's not *worse* by any stretch of the imagination (in many ways, VGM has never been better) but it does cause the music to lose something in the process.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah. I think there are some real compositional lessons to be learned from both looking at those older VGM's and trying to put something together under limitations like that. One side note on the topic, it meant that combined with the great melody work they were often easily vocalized.

    Hmm... I don't know if there are groups that typically do this type of music... The only one I can really think of is Jam Project, but that's because they almost exclusively work on songs for anime and video games lol (including a few of the Super Robot Wars games, so you could technically react to them)... I don't think they normally have as much brass in their songs though... That's a bit more old fashioned for anime themes...
    70s and 80s anime themes for action based anime often have a mix of rock and disco or something... Kinda like other TV shows or movies of the era maybe... Some of that bleeds into the more modern stuff... But yeah, it's more a composition than just a song... Maybe more like jingles for adverts in some ways... something an orchestra or big band style group might do, but yeah... I can't think of a specific one off of the top of my head... There were a few instrumental disco style tracks that used to do well in the pop charts sometimes, but around then I think popular music and soundtrack style music diverged more in terms of the market... The odd exceptions maybe being stuff like Bond themes? Some more modern anime themes sometimes fit the more commercial pop music market, but yeah... Maybe try out some 70s or 80s action/mecha anime themes if you like though, in your spare time. Some are amazing ^_^
    ... Oh and if I remember correctly, they made an anime based on the Super Robot Wars OG characters. Look up the TV version of this track maybe. It's much more of an orchestral style version, if you're interested.

      @Xeno-The-Wanderer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The orchestral version I believe is part of the divine Wars SRW anime since The Inspector SRW anime legit plays the game’s music straight up a lot of the times with only Steel Beowulf getting a few remixes as far as I remember
