Thank you for such a clear, detailed, and compact video on saddle adjustments! All these other videos got to have history lessons on saddles along with a bunch of scientific jargon, and 20 minutes long! 😅
Fantastic I’ve had heaps of trouble getting the correct spot and always suffered a knee problem. After doing this I’ve found my MTB is so much better to ride and my hard tail on the bike paths is so much more comfortable
Thank you for this video! I’m new to biking and have heard many ways to set my seat height. This is the most clear and straightforward way I’ve heard. Thanks!
Wow, the camera work in those opening shots was so good. Mad respect for maintaining crispy focus with such a shallow depth of field with a moving subject #cameranerd
Thank you. This was very clear. I like the video from behind showing whether you are tipping to read the pedal. Also, about the knee pain. I can hardly wait for my rotator cuff surgery to heal so I can check my saddle height. 😂 I wear a couple of different shoes for riding and adjust as needed.
I'm going to give this method a try as a cross check if nothing else. In the past what I've done is just stand the bike upj/lean against a wall and pedal backwards with my arch on the pedal, making adjustments to be at full are almost completely full extension. I never have gone back an actually measured the spacing afterward which is something I can see I should have done. Update: After measuring and checking the measurement against the current saddle height, they are identical. It's nice to know that the two methods agree so closely.
I noticed in my last handful of rides the seat post seemed to be lower than I remember and then today on my ride I was getting some pain at my quads at the top of my knee. Time to make an adjustment. Great video guys!
A few years ago I adjusted my saddle height using advice from this channel for off road riding & did LEJOG ,Last year I had a professional bike fit & it turned out my saddle was 2" too low .
.. if I have to choose between too high or too low, I personally take the latter. Too high can dangerous especially for the elder rider like me. I feel that a bit on the low side is a lot safer/ more comfortable than being a bit too high. Ride safe and have fun 😀.
My saddle height was for sure very wrong lol.. I tried the method of sitting with heel first. Then tried with the tape.. Practically identical, my heel to nut measurement being 5mm maybe higher. Am not the first order of bikers tho and it already feels better. So am giving it a go 😊
I see more people with there saddles too short rather then to high. I do it by putting the heel of my foot on the Pedal and set it to where I’m not quiet locked out my knee joint. Works like a charm.
I think the broomstick and tape measure's unnecessary. Heel to extended pedal (4.00min) is all I've used for 30+ years. Just pedal backwards with both heels in this position to make sure your hips aren't rocking , which would indicate you're still too high. Love them droppers! 😊 *PS (Use the tape measure to record results for your other bikes. This leaves the broom free to sweep up the shop ;-)
Isn’t there a more direct assessment that could be made be having someone take a video of you while you’re riding and then pause it at full extension and use some precut pieces of paper to check leg angle (I don’t even know what optimum is - around 165 deg maybe?). Then all these variables (where you sit on the seat, stack height of shoes at heel vs toes, etc.) are taken care of. I’ll have to try that myself.
I still believe in the Greg leMond method to measure to the axle because you're exerting maximum force when the crank arm is horizontal An exception is if you aren't flexible and your hips are rocking when you pedal Also look at the Peak Torque channel - he has a great video analysing crank arm length
Great video. I was wondering if you could go through the seat height adjustment but taking into account tightening or loosening the dropper cable? I've found if I drop the dropper too much the dropper cable is too loose and so seat doesn't stay up. Thanks for all the great videos
Mine wont move so when i went from 170 cranks to 165 I just had to adjust to the 5mm difference and convince myself its such a small change it wont matter too much.
If I do this with this method my leg is bend quite a lot by the end of the stroke. And even if I put the heels on the pedals my legs are still bend. If I do it by the extended leg method with the heel on the pedal, my saddle needs to be 9 cm higher than my inseam is long. I dont understand. I really want to dial in my saddle hight, because my uphill pedaling sucks. But it is pretty hard with these half baked measurement methods. Do you have any tips , except a expensive bike fitter ? Great Video, great channel, great products ( bought your jerseys) but this video and the one from neil from 2015 are no help at all to find my saddle hight.
I discovered that a combination of adjusting my saddle height and buying 20mm titanium pedal spacers did wonders for me. I do recommend doing some research on your crank arms and checking if pedal spacers will work with them since I noticed that the extra 20mm space from the crank to the pedal is putting alot of stress on the screw hole for the pedals and is slowly starting to warp the screw hole in my cranks, I do have a cheap $50 IXF crankset though.
Looks easy but with that adjustment measured with your leg fully extended, wouldn't that mean your leg is fully extended when at the bottom of your pedal stroke? I'm old but in my "boomer" days, we always wanted a little bend in the knees when at bottom of the pedal stroke.
Measuring that way will still leave a little bend in your knee, since you are also flexing/bending your ankle when pedalling, and that length was not taken in the initial measurement. That's why the inseam measurement is a good starting point, but some fine tuning might be needed depending on where you put your feets on the pedal and your pedalling style.
Ergon grips and non padded palm gloves. Worked for me. Just make sure you get the right size grip for your hands.I always got chunky grips and that was half the problem. I should have had small.
it's incredible how much of a difference just changing shoes make to the saddle height!
I went from flats to clipped and i didn't even think about changing heights until i started pedaling on trail lol
This is the greatest video I have ever seen. You are awesome in so many ways. Thank you for the detailed description on measurements. Very engaging
Wow you must of been watching some crap videos then

What. Wait! Anna is speaking my language....METRIC!!! I'm in love.
Great reminder, will check my bikes again!
I guess they sold Doddy to buy the lens they used in this video. Fantastic filmatography and lighting. Love the bokeh. Props to the camera person!
Yes, What camera & lens did you use? The videography is excellent.
Great explanation. Easy to implement. Thanks!
Well done. Good starting point for most people.
What happened to Doddy?
I was drinking coffee when I heard to get a broom stick and get it way up in there.... I chose a burnt throat over a new lap top.
Fantastic I’ve had heaps of trouble getting the correct spot and always suffered a knee problem. After doing this I’ve found my MTB is so much better to ride and my hard tail on the bike paths is so much more comfortable
Very simple and understandable instructions.

Fore and aft adjustment is equally important, as is saddle tilt, to get the best riding position. It's not all just saddle height.
My with runs her saddle pointing straight up

Instructions unclear, broomstick stuck!
Probably did it wrong.
Call BS without pics. 😂
You have a great way of explaining complicated topics. 👏 TY

Don’t forget to account for seat sag and crank stretch.

Really informative video, simple and clear explanation. Thank you!
Thanks😊 That was very clear and very helpful!
Great video, and camera work!
Great info, very well done, thanks!! Nice bike BTW!
I was dying laughing! Wasn’t watching the vid and had my headphones in and I hear if you have a broom or stick get it way up there 😂

Great video.. as always!
GMBN rarely makes good videos
@@superchickensoup i know right.. they are always awesome and great.
Love your work very detailed but kept really brief and very helpful thanks heaps from all the way over in Australia
0:50 If you move your cleat forward (bad anyway), you won’t be reaching. Your foot and ankle will be further back.

Where is Doddy?
The cinematics 👌
wow, that is so easy! ty 😘
I got the Ergon Mtb Expert fitting box, I'm now perfectly comfortable on my Dune R
I see more people with there saddles too short rather then to high. I do it by putting the heel of my foot on the Pedal and set it to where I’m not quiet locked out my knee joint. Works like a charm.
Thanks Anna, I just checked mine and looked to be 30-40mm too high! I have had some slight knee pain in my left knee.
Adding some padded shorts will also put it out a few mm
For me the simplest way is to make adjustment if there is knee pain… if it’s there, the saddle is too low(not too high as the video says)
I think the broomstick and tape measure's unnecessary.

And please, do not over tighten the screw attached to your seat post, it can bend the frame which leads to structural failure, don't bend the frame.
that's right but generally applies to carbon frames.
I only transferred my road bike saddle height to the MTB no problem so far
It takes time just like finding your optimal gear ratios and geometry.
Isn’t there a more direct assessment that could be made be having someone take a video of you while you’re riding and then pause it at full extension and use some precut pieces of paper to check leg angle (I don’t even know what optimum is - around 165 deg maybe?). Make sure your dropper is all the way up. I know this is obvious, but sometimes the obvious isn't noticed by everyone...😊

Just do a bikefit. There’s much more to it than just saddle height
i set my seat so when my heels are on the pedals, my legs just straighten out when i pedal
Guess what, there is a measurement that road riders use with a plumbob for knee to foot position on the pedals
Set saddle so leg is almost at full stretch. This means you shouldn't be able to touch the floor with both feet.
How far broom stick had to be inserted? It went farther than my 170mm seatpost. So could be more clear please.
... and sometimes, your knee pain is due to having slept on a hard bed.
for me it has always just been standing on the balls of my feet when sitting on saddle.
If I do this with this method my leg is bend quite a lot by the end of the stroke. And even if I put the heels on the pedals my legs are still bend. Can you do a video on how to tie my shoe lace please
What about handlebar height?
Budget for bike £7k, budget for bike fit? Amazes me that too many don’t consider the benefits of a proper fit.
Got a crush on you! And great informative video! Thank you!
Ditto
Haha you fancy Charlie dimmock. I am guessing you are a portly 50 year old 😂
Lol.....I saw her first
Any body know what jacket or jacket brand she's wearing?
790 from the pedal to the saddle? Why do I have a difference of 6cm with the method of multiplying by 0.883?

Nice one, extremely well presented, to the point. & I wish i was the broomstick.

Hands up who rides with their saddle too high! What? No-one on the planet? Surprising!
What happens when you hands become numb?
Ergon grips and non padded palm gloves. Worked for me. Just make sure you get the right size grip for your hands.I always got chunky grips and that was half the problem. I should have had small.
I had a difficult time finding the best fit distance and angle from the handle bars. Once I found this, the height fell right in place.
those wheels are wayyy to big for you
That’s a thing
Need the info in the title, not a psychology lesson. 😮
Dunno, man...
If you can afford it, get a bike fit.....
29'ers look so wrong when shorter people ride them 😂😂 how can they not see this?
Your handlebars aren't as tall as your armpits?
That Granny looks like my first teacher, but didn't manage to teach me anything new...
Ridiculous
Anna you are wonderful.
Are you married ???😁😉
FORZA ✌️
thank you for nice and clear demonstration to adjust the saddle height..more power..from Vienna Austria
Take a rest ok. what the hell has the World turned into??????????
