That's a super valid question. The funny part is as you're a more advanced bike nerd you know the terms like seat post and seat tube but that's when you start calling it saddle 😅
Because it is a saddle. A saddle is a type of seat where you sit with one leg on either side. If you just say "seat" it could be anything. A chair, a bench, a toilet seat, a children's seat, a bar stool, a sofa or ejection seat.
damn, i guess that's why i wasn't comfortable when i sit and not jumping around. I needed a saddle all along and not just the drop post going up when needed 🤦♀️
My props to post production (editing) team.. . Love those cuts scenes.. made the video a lot more fun, and keep you focus on the video. Good work guys! 💪😄
I'm still using a WTB Pure I took off a 2005 Kona Stinky on my aggressive hardtail. Thankfully it's in great condition because I mostly ride downhill and not very often. 15 years ago WTB saddles were not available in my country and I fell in love with it when I saw a Stinky at a bike shop. Lucky for me it was intended to be stripped for parts and the cockpit and saddle were still available.
As a heavyweight rider it took me a bit to find the right seat, but now most of my bikes have the Selle Royal Respiro Athletic equipped. More cushion for the weight pushin down..
I like a range of saddles that I have ridden, but the one saddle I have had in multiple bikes and works well for a wide range of riding styles and disciplines is the Charge Spoon saddle. I’ve had it on an all mountain/enduro bike and two freeride/park bikes and it’s strong, pretty, and comfy.
I ride a Fabric Scoop Radius Pro. I've done 6+ hour rides on it with no issues at all. It's worked out so well that I got the flatter road model with the same shape but less of a curve for my road bike.
glad i stuck to video past the silly answers portion - the last guy had more info than i've found in other casual internet searching. put together with your overview and suggestions on padding vs hours in saddle helps provide some sense and order for considering the features/benefits of choices available. great channel, great store and service to the sport :)
Funny, Ergon SM Pro feels great, WTB Silverado just hurts, like night and day. Fabric is somewhere in between, fine for 2-3h, but they do get creaky. I do have wide sit bones, and width is absolutely critical regardless of brand.
WTB Pure. fell in love with it when I first got into MTB and I've run it ever since. I can loose more weight not having that extra beer then I would save with a lighter saddle and sacrificing comfort.
Thanks for making a video on this! I typically ride 5-8 hours per week but I tend to do more 'trail' riding with a good mix of climbing and descending. My saddle definitely doesn't fit super well but I really had now clue where to start looking. For reference, I have a Bontrager saddle on my MTB (not sure which model), and a Fabric saddle on my gravel bike. I've definitely noticed how quickly the fabric saddle gets narrow which I'm not a big fan of so maybe I need to try one that's a bit wider. Thanks for all of your tips!
Ergon sm-pro is my happy place, saying that the women's specific sport gel was comfy too. Perennial numbness was my biggest issue on the bike. I tried SDG, Diety, Bontrager for MTB. Specialized romin Evo gel expert is my go to for road riding.
I see no Brooks saddles, I have contacted the Hipster Inquisition and you should expect to be contacted by them forthwith. Also, your lack of inclusion of SQ Labs saddles has forced me to contact the Global Nerd Coalition and the #everythingeuroisbetter squad will be in touch with you soon for mandatory reeducation sessions. That is all.
In Texas we pedal a lot for short fast downhill mountain biking. Recently getting back into the sport everyone I met was on WTB, after going through 4 of their models none worked. Went through 5 other brands $150-$400 same bad feel. Then picked up a Ergon enduro pro and was perfect, 15-20 miles of pedaling became a joy. I just say go sit on a few, as everyone is different. TBH most downhill riders rarely sit on their saddle and would not know any difference between them other than "style". Also just recently ordered a rear shock upgrade from ya'll great price and fast shipping, I will be back.
At the end of the day, it's personal preference. I run a goofy looking Specialized "body form" seat when riding distance or out on a family ride but if there's some nice hill action then out comes my nice light, slim kind of uncomfortable in the long run Nukeproof. The body form is unrivalled so far in comfort but it's cumbersome hitting hills. You might find a cheap Apollo (Halfords special) seat feels good to you. Run it. Who cares if you're on a Yeti and you're putting a seat from a £200 junker on there. The best bike in the world is the bike you like to ride the most.
Thank you all so much for this one. I am super picky about saddles, and finally figuring out a better way to measure is going to really help out on my MTB but especially my tri bike... It taint no thing, but a pain in the ass when your seat sucks.
for Triathlon, is completely recommended take your bike to a professional bike fitting service, because the posture on the bike completely relies on your flexibility. Doesn't matter if the saddle is the correct one, if your bars are too low for your flex, or your saddle is too far forward on the rails. Just my 2 cents.
Im an oldman with mutipal injuries, so I ride VERY slowly, like really slow, I get overtakeken by retired ppl 70y old, but I still have my MTB bike, I have a suspension eMTB 27.5+ with surspension and steatpost and a lady sadel, then i have quicksnap so I can change between sadels in 4seconds, I have 4 different to chose from. The best sadel for me was on my old Honda CB500 motercycle, It was like a sofa on 2 wheels.
After watching this video I’m quitting my 6 figure job to come work for you and sell saddles. You’re going to be replacing that bottle behind you more often. Im on a big booty Bontrager Montrose Ti rail that I bought from the used parts bin at my LBS. I took the Silverado off my Ripmo and keep it in reserve.
Right now I have a Selle Royal Lookin Athletic. I got it very cheap and it has gel in the middle for more comfort. It looks quite good too. I would like to try a Ergon SM Enduro or Pro in the future.
Jonathan's bag of flour measurement hack for saddle width is a great idea. And makes for interesting dinner conversation: "Why is daddy sitting on a bag of flour mommy?"
and now i see your video(casual rider) after spending a couple of bucks trying to find a nice saddle, ended with a wtb santa cruz (for my bike ;) hehehe, great video guys
I used to take off all the padding of a cheap saddle that had an ergonomic shape, and it was the best saddle ever. I could ride for hours on it without pain.
For me with 16+ years of road competitive and now for fun, I go to my saddle choice fizik aliante 00 for my med travel bike and for my XC bike I use fizik Antares 00. Also I prefer carbon shell and carbon rails.
Currently I am riding on a fabric SCOOP SPORT SHALLOW saddle. It came with my new MTB and it's probably the most comfortable saddle I have ever had. I'm still planning on trying out the testing recommend in the vid to see how I sit on the saddle.
My gravel has the Ergon SM pro but my mountain bikes just get either a WTB or SDG saddle just depends on what’s on sale at the time I replace or I’m spec’ing my new sled.
Hi, I have a question. Why enduro and downhill bikes use long nose saddle?. I heard that people say some UCI rules, But I was thinking to to use short nose saddle for downhill and enduro as the swork power saddle or the bisaddle, that is 23 cm or 9 inches length. I think that, because the weight saddle, free space for pedaling. Thankyou.
Had my kona fire mountain saddle for 17 years now, goes onto every new bike, but now I havec2 favorites, just want something the same to replace the crappy Bontrager saddle
I currently have a Forte Endure Air saddle on my mtb, no complaints. In contrast, I had to try several saddles for my road bike, ultimately I stayed with the ISM PR 3.0.
Thankyou for going through different M.T.B subjects and explaining them, It helps a lot of people, and I'm sure it's not easy 🤘 Cheers ! P.s I love the Nukeproof vector AM in orange 😎 and I'm not a fan of cut aways because I'm a Brit and I don't want a wet arse and the sun only shines on T.V or when I'm at work !
Surprised no one's mentioned the Charge Spoon yet, fantastic saddle at a bargain price point. Got one on all my bikes now. Wtb and Sdg never fitted me.
I've got a default saddle when i bought it. My sitbones hurt. Hahaha. I'll try to get used to it. Also, haven't bought a padded shorts or wears yet so am still waiting for the budget.
Joystick Binary. It is pretty cool looking with a red space invader graffic. And colour matches too. Comfort is decent enough. And it was about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of other seats at the time, thanks to an awesome sale.
I had a terrible Bontrager saddle years ago. I rode often. At the start of every ride, my ass was unhappy and then I would totally forget about it after a few pedal strokes. By the end of the ride, my ass felt fine. Looking back, I don't know if the seat was actually terrible.
A silly question here... Once a person figures out their sit bone width, should a person look for a saddle that is as close to the same width, get one slightly larger, or...?
I came looking for the correct lengths for saddles that were "necessary" for thigh control and climbing. Is there a length minimum that is considered too short? I know Specialized sells there wider saddles that are considered by there website to be both road and mountain like the Power Comp, but these are shorter are these too short?
I ran a WTB Volt for two years and could never seem to get it in the right place. I recently switched it for a Ergon SM Comp and troubles came to an end after a bit of tweeking on the trail.
Really strange, I rarely see Ergon and Deity and WBT never. In Europe people who care about saddle chose between Selle Italia and Fizik.. Other people mostly ride plethora of Specialized, Bontrager, Cube seats..
You can’t beat Brooks Leather Saddle I’ve used them for years, at first they hurt but once worn in they are the most comfortable saddle you can buy and they last the life of the bike.
It´s TOTALLY individual. I use Selle Italia SLR Superflow, Specialized S-works Power * 2 . I thinks it easier with the new short saddles in techical terrain & decents without dropper
just started mtb with my dad's old yeti 575 , he haven't be riding for almost 6 years it had an fizik tail flex , im ok with it until i realize the nose of the saddle is wearing off and started damaging the inner thigh of my cycling pants and now im kinda looking for a new saddle for it
What saddle do you currently have on your bike?
i have an old specialized saddle and its so nice had it on my dads bike for over 20 years and holding up fine!
the one that came with my bike haha
Wtb Volt*!
WTB volt!!!
Ergon SM Pro on my full sus. Ergon SM Comp on my hard tail. Also Spesh make great saddles!!
Why do we call them "saddles" when they are attached to SEATposts inserted in SEATtubes supported by SEATstays... ? 🤔
ocsnare1025 I call them seats as much or more than saddles
You straddle saddles, like a horse
That's a super valid question. The funny part is as you're a more advanced bike nerd you know the terms like seat post and seat tube but that's when you start calling it saddle 😅
Think of your bike as a horse...then you know why seats are called saddles
Because it is a saddle. A saddle is a type of seat where you sit with one leg on either side. If you just say "seat" it could be anything. A chair, a bench, a toilet seat, a children's seat, a bar stool, a sofa or ejection seat.
I like my volt medium. It took me a few rides to get my riding position dialed on my new build, but the seat is spot on now.
I wonder if anyone has ever bought a Deity Speedtrap for a reason other than it matching their bike color.
😂
Definitely not
I got my speed trap because it fit my sit bone size and It looks sick lol. But now that I've been on it its way more comfortable then my stock seat.
F-1Boosted27 bull....you got it for the color....(and it’s ok) 🙂
Joystick Binary, purely for looks. Happens to be comfy enough for my butt too.
damn, i guess that's why i wasn't comfortable when i sit and not jumping around. I needed a saddle all along and not just the drop post going up when needed 🤦♀️
This is beautiful
+10 street cred
I am now a happy boi, my favorite channel posted
Johnathon is a saddle Guru! He made this so simple for me! Thanks folks!
Been riding on a Chromag Mood DT saddle for the past four years and just love it!!
Great information as always! Fact: The editing and interviews in these videos are more entertaining than any movie I've streamed all summer.
Damn. Great point about how often a rider rides. Building up muscle.
Deity Speedtrap! It came on my current bike and it both feels and looks better than other saddles I've tried.
My props to post production (editing) team.. . Love those cuts scenes.. made the video a lot more fun, and keep you focus on the video. Good work guys! 💪😄

I have a WTB Volt on the hardtail, and a Crankbrothers Iodine on the full suspension. I find both very comfortable!
Hey mate I have a hard tail Scott scale seat is really hard, hate it. Don't know what to buy, I ride afew times a week and am 110 kg any ideas?
As a heavyweight rider it took me a bit to find the right seat, but now most of my bikes have the Selle Royal Respiro Athletic equipped. More cushion for the weight pushin down..

Good pair of shorts helps a lot.
Ergon SM Women’s. Great fit for me and Ergon just makes great quality products.
Nice and great to hear! Ergon is super impressive. Thanks for commenting 😁
WTB Pure. fell in love with it when I first got into MTB and I've run it ever since. I can loose more weight not having that extra beer then I would save with a lighter saddle and sacrificing comfort.

Thanks for the humor along with the quality content... my kids got a lot of laughs out of this one while I learned quite a bit... great work WWC!
First Ride in 20 years , 2024 Turbo Levo Comp Alloy , 40 minutes and 10 miles on and off road my ass is killing today ! Haha
Same bike and my ass is killing me too … I ended the ride standing up 😂
I got a memory foam saddle and it was the best decision I ever made. It completely gets rid of the need for a chamois. Comfort is king.
I see no Brooks saddles, I have contacted the Hipster Inquisition and you should expect to be contacted by them forthwith. Great video I almost forgot I was watching a video from a retailer.

@@fabian12369139 already did. still hate the saddle
@@runinthebuff then you got the answer, change it

this is actualy a good video. the part with Jonathan Lee of course! thank you kindly
Glad you enjoyed it!
Jonathan's bag of flour measurement hack for saddle width is a great idea. And makes for interesting dinner conversation: "Why is daddy sitting on a bag of flour mommy?"

I have but one glaring question after watching this video. What does Tudlow ride?
If you are rocking back and forth while pedaling, it’s not the saddle itself, it’s because your saddle is WAY too high. This is unfortunately common.
Excellent video! I ride WTB 👌
For the price, wtb volt cromoly is a great saddle.
Bell gel saddle cover from the 90s. Golden.
I used to take off all the padding of a cheap saddle that had an ergonomic shape, and it was the best saddle ever. I could ride for hours on it without pain.

Rider interviews were amazing 😂😂😂😂
Just found your TH-cam channel guys. Great content.
I liked the interview with Jonathan Lee, (And that reminds me that I'm way behind on my mtb podcast and TrainerRoad episodes.)
Jonathon is legit! 👌
We need the Mtb podcast back! Pass it on if you don’t mind.
It turns out I need a new saddle this video help me
I have an Ergon and love it! Got it from you guys.
Currently I am riding on a fabric SCOOP SPORT SHALLOW saddle. It came with my new MTB and it's probably the most comfortable saddle I have ever had. I'm still planning on trying out the testing recommend in the vid to see how I sit on the saddle.
I ride a lot but I am only actually sitting like 30% of the time because I also ride a lot of BMX so it feels wired sitting down
My gravel has the Ergon SM pro but my mountain bikes just get either a WTB or SDG saddle just depends on what’s on sale at the time I replace or I’m spec’ing my new sled.
Can we get a guide to chamois?
I have a fabric saddle that matches the color of my bike perfectly. It’s sick.
Me too
Definitely the DMR OiOi saddle I love it and the Miami camo colorway is freaking dope on top of its amazing comfort
Jeffroe you are a lord.I need to pick a saddle and this is what I needed !
Cheers mate 🤙🚀🙏🔥
👍 Glad this video helped! That's what we are here to do.
Thank you. I sent this to a friend who may need a different saddle.
Jonathan Lee's words are the most noteworthy here.

Been comparing those lately, leaning towards the 611.

Lol you guys are so cool and funny I hope you guys are like this in person
Haha we certainly are. We're not acting here. Just being ourselves.
Thanks Jeff
Had Ergon SM Sport saddle and it was pain in the ass, replaced with WTB volt medium and its nearly perfect.
A silly question here...
Once a person figures out their sit bone width, should a person look for a saddle that is as close to the same width, get one slightly larger, or...?
I ride a lot no chamois. Specialized Power is a good pick. Cheap saddles work due to padding but real fit comes without a lot of padding
I have a Trek Arvada Pro Carbon fits perfect
(tried it on a friends trek fuel and my butt loved it)
Diety speed trap all the way. Best lookin saddle on the market and has unparalleled feel. 9/10

Selle Italia Flite titanium.. the mother of all sportssaddles
25 years ago, I had a Ritchey saddle that came on my Marin. I never wanted anything else after that.
You can’t beat Brooks Leather Saddle I’ve used them for years, at first they hurt but once worn in they are the most comfortable saddle you can buy and they last the life of the bike.
i just use the seat that came stock on my bike
Ahmed Housni Same lol
God the throw back references just made me sub (I said what what in the but)

just started mtb with my dad's old yeti 575 , he haven't be riding for almost 6 years
it had an fizik tail flex , im ok with it until i realize the nose of the saddle is wearing off and started damaging the inner thigh of my cycling pants
and now im kinda looking for a new saddle for it
