I remember my dad handing me a book when i was in 6th grade and he said "read this, dont procrastinate, I genuinely think you will enjoy it." Then I read it, took 3 months because Im a very slow reader and then when i finished the book my dad showed me the 4 part movie and it was the best book to movie transformation ever. Such a great story, and if this song is not played at my funeral, then dammit I am not going.
This classic Western wouldn’t be nearly the classic if it wasn’t for this musical score. It captures the sorrows, the triumphs, the romance, the humor and the sense of adventure perfectly.
This was a beautiful story with a haunting score. My son, who had lifelong physical disabilities, watched this every chance he got. I had the music played at his funeral two days ago. It was perfect.
It's been 6 months since my dad passed. My dad and I watched this with me when I was a kid 5 to be exact. Well watching this for the first time with my son who is now five😢 I am a grown man crying remembering watching this with my dad. My son asked me what's wrong all I could get out was I love u son
God Bless you and your son Parker. I'm 66 and my Dad and I enjoyed this great story over and over thru the years, he's passed now and it is real tuff but I enjoy it still..he would say this movie is under appreciated because ALL the important lessons of life can be learned viewing it. Friendship, love, loss, honor, integrity, hardship...I know exactly how you feel. Its amazing.
Parker Beaty don't feel bad I'm a grown mad but when I hear this powerful music coming into my ears but my heart says another. My tears just roll out of my eye's just thinking of how it was back then.I love this master piece. It's awesome. Th.u
My dad passed away when I was 14, now I am 61. But now I have a son to his name is Augustus (Gus) . I gave him this movie to watch . I've asked him Gus did you look at all of it? He has said no daddy I am not ready to give up yet. Let's just go on to Montana.
My pops showed this to me as well at about the age of 6. He passed back in 2016. Ill be showing this to my boy as well. One of the greatest cinematic pieces of our time if not the best.
always a lump in my throat when gus dies . gets me every time . whenever i finish watching this miniseries it always takes me a day or two to get over it lol feels like youve been on the whole andventure yourself . masterpiece
ABSOLUTELY! I have loved this mini series since it premiered in February 1989. The characters, the scenery, the music, the actors, everything about it touches your soul. You do feel as though you are participating in the adventure along with Captain Call, Gus, Deets and all the other memorable characters. I introduced my son to the show when he was old enough, around 1993 and we still enjoy and bond over it to this day. I wholeheartedly agree, it is a MASTERPIECE.
It really does, and I’m only 12 but I used to watch this with my dad all the time. When Gus dies and the Black guy (can’t remember his name so sorry) I still cry it just so sad. It’s a masterpiece and really shows you part of the real American west
About a month ago I was doing doordash and had just dropped an order off and had this soundtrack blasting in my car. I stopped by the side of road to take a little break and as I was sitting there I looked out my window on the driver's side. Right next to my car was a lonesome dove! One single turtle dove had flown down and was looking up at my car. It didn't fly away it just stayed there looking up at me in the window. It was a very spiritual moment for me because I don't believe in coincidence. It was a message from the universe that it hears me and that I matter. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Robert Duvall's characters in two scenes in two separate movies shattered me and he wasn't the one who spoke. His performance in To Kill A Mockingbird should be filed under "THIS is how it's done, son!" especially when Scout says, "Hey, Boo!" The look on his face was the most anguished, grief stricken expression. The second is Augustus' death scene toward the end of Lonesome Dove. Gus looked so at peace just listening to the whore play piano while his best friend said his goodbyes. "Awe-gust-tus" ripped my heart out!
Parker Beaty If your like your Dad, check out these books , 1 Carry the wind 2 One eyed dream 3 The border lords by Terry C Johnson. They are a grand story . Like lonesome dove.
My Dad loved this too. He has the whole collection of various mini series that have been released on it, and watches it about once a year. sorry for your loss.
The way that scene was explained in the book was priceless. McMurtry said Call thought it over and felt like he just couldn't leave people without an epxlanation, so out it came.
Not very many book-to-screen adaptations can say that, but the whole series including Comanche Moon and Dead Man's Walk have whole passages and conversations word-for-word with only a few changes overall.
My Dad was a Texan. Every thing about this movie was so great and real. My Dad and I watched this together too. The characters are so rich. Still makes me well up inside.....
Watched it all 30 years ago and it stands still today as an absolute unequivocal masterpiece . Great epic story with a great cast of actors and a beautiful musical score 🙂
I think his score for "Conan the Barbarian" was the first time i was aware of this exemplary composer. The score for this classic award-winning TV series is perfect for the material and is a perfect companion for his jaunty melodious music for the Tom Selleck Western "Quigley Down Under". Like James Horner, he was taken from this life at far too young an age. So much lost.
This is the greatest Western score ever. A masterpiece. Beautiful. And musically, the score takes you on a journey, evokes certain imagery in different portions. For example, it starts quieter, majestic, evoking the mystery of the western frontier that is out ahead of you. Its slightly sad too, very similar to taps, there is a sense of leaving everything behind, your old life dying. Then at 0:53 when the music swells, it becomes more determined, more heroic, like you have set out. You've taken the first steps and the journey is underway
This was the greatest modern day western ever made, without exception. It to all of the major cast to make it happen, Duvall, Houston and Jones. It would not have been the same with out them but the others were important and contributed more than they know. The following sequels never measured up
I really do not know whats better the story the acting or the music. What say you? May be the music ? Makes me tear up every time ! What a time and place to be alive ! ! !
When they picked the cast for this movie they hit the nail right on the head I was glued to the TV for the whole miniseries only part I didn't like was Gus's death but the whole series shows what true friendship is all about and it will go down in history as one of the greatest western series ever made
not only the best western ever made, but the best movie ever made...there is no other movie i can watch as many times as I have watched this movie, they don't make 'em like this anymore...
peckaaron "not only the best western ever made, but the best movie ever made...there is no other movie i can watch as many times as I have watched this movie, they don't make 'em like this anymore..." It's not a movie.
I have a soft spot for Larry McMurtry's works: Horseman, Pass By (which became the movie Hud), Leaving Cheyenne, The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, Streets of Laredo, Dead Man's Walk, Comanche Moon, but Lonesome Dove is my favorite. The fact that so many became successful movies is due to his ability to bring his characters alive.
I have read many times here that this is the best western ever made and after considering the many types of western I have seen I must agree. If Gus was anything like the character I would have been honored to spend a portion of life sharing in his vision of how we should approach, see and respect all manners of life.
Back in the summer of 1995, my daughters and I watched Lonesome Dove at least every other day. Hearing this takes me back to that wonderful summer with my girls.
@@jorgio6473 He'd never received an academy award… Perhaps he's more famous in the U.S. but here in Austria everybody is talking about Williams, Goldsmith etc… but only few people seem to have heard of basil Poledouris, whenever I show them his film scores they seem to be quite surprised…
I remember going into town as a kid to my grandparents to watch the series as it came on each night bc we couldn't get the channel out in the country. I was enthralled with the movie then and just as much now. One of the very few movies that doesn't age.
I watched this in 1993 when I was 17 with a beautiful gf who was my highschool sweetheart, I later lost her, then was involved in an auto accident that took my legs, this music brings back a time when I was whole..........tears come to me
that lonesome dove beautiful music just puts my thoughts in another world when I just close my eyes and my tears and I fill my tears leaving my eyes I don't even know why its so beautiful thank you..
Watched Lonesome Dove years later. WTH was I doing in '89 instead of plunked down watching it first run? Young and dumb I guess. But now seen it oh about 10 times. Best Western novel became the best Western miniseries. And one of the best stories of friendship, loyalty and courage. Call, Gus, their team, and the ladies in their lives can teach us all so much about Life. Ride on fellas.
My parents watched this when my siblings and I were just children and I can honestly say it is one of the best things I have ever seen. Not just in the western category, in any category
Greatest tv mini series ever. The best actors, the best setting, the best story. So raw and true and full of grit. This really is my fav movie/series whatever it is. Brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to this song. One word, beautiful.
You just (4 years ago) named three of the greatest and of my favorite westerns. The last two days I watched LD for the second and two weeks ago The Searchers for maybe the 10th time. And for a while now rewatching True Grit and Red River run through my mind. The John Wayne character roles/movies have a very high rewatchability, especially The Shootist. I've seen this movie at least 20 times. Western is the greatest genre.
This music is breathtaking. Lonesome Dove was aired here in Italy in 1991 and never again, I think... Since the first episode I was absolutely stunned at those open spaces, the myth of the frontier, those sunsets... I really think I'll buy the DVD, can't wait to watch it from the beginning after 24 years and in English, this time!
I can't believe they originally wanted John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda as Woodrow, Gus, and Jake, respectively. It would have been a completely different movie.
I absolutely love to share this gem with someone who has not yet seen it. I have a very good Chinese friend, born in China, but a naturalized citizen, and we watched it together (part one). When he finished watching the entire movie he was awe struck. He told me he could really understand what made America so great after watching this. Wonderful!
The best western ever! The music pulls out the breadth and emptiness of the landscape. The daring deeds and courage of those who set forth to make it there home.
At first i hated the movie, but by the time I got to the last episode I was in love... wonderful music, wonderful ending, some great portions of screenplay, and a few excellent characters.
I miss you mama since you passed 31 July 2017 not a day has gone by that I dont think of you. You live inside me now. Memories is all thats left. I'll carry you with me wherever I go.
I read the book (I'm a big McMurtry fan) and new immediately this had to be made into a film. What resulted was beyond my wildest dreams, Kudos to everyone involved. I've seen it more times than I can remember and still am moved by it. The best western ever made, bar none.
Proud to be from Texas. As a boy my brother, Dad, and myself hunted near the Nueces river near Uvalde, Texas. The best time ever. reminds me of my youth.
Imagine listening to this soundtrack, as you slowly glide into ABQ Sunport, out of DFW, in late afternoon sunset, after having been away from New Mexico for 15 years.. . . . over teh Sandia Mts, the High Desert, and then circling the Rio Grande Valley ......... Words cannot descibe...... This music can!!!
I would love to some day hear this beautiful music to my ears my mind my soul that just tells me hay your human listen to it it so very careful and injoy it. That I do I shut my eyes and I can see all my life in my own theatre that's my mind. The hard life I've had and still working I'm 63 I've worked since I was 12 but you know what I never regret it to help my family and I thank the men and women to write this music. It means so much to real people that were born in this country and live in it to survive. I love you all. Thank you.
I re-watch this thing every year, now with the latest Blu-Ray version in HD. BUT the book is even better; heck 80% of the dialogue is straight out of Larry McMurtry's best selling book.
One of the best movies ever made. And that's coming from a hip-hophead who normally doesn't dig anything excessively western. But you gotta love McMurtry, no matter who you are.
I first saw this movie when it premiered. It is the best piece of film, big screen or tv that i have ever seen or ever will see. I am 60 years old and i get teary when I hear the theme. Whoever did the casting on this film should have gotten an Emmy, but did not. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones were both brilliant. The entire cast was stellar!
I watched the series in 1989. Then I read the book twice. I wish I had read the book first. The series was very faithful to the book. It did omit the fight between the Texas Bull and the grizzly bear and other things I don’t remember. Well, there’s the youngster at the end with the black powder revolver. And the cloud of grasshoppers. The book took me on a 15 year reading frenzy of early Texas history. The Texas Rangers, the Texas Revolution, then on to the Civil War. Quite an interesting and informative period.
Captain Call seems a lot like the real life Charlie Goodnight. Gus may have been somewhat like Oliver Loving. Great western, and being a mini series they could work more scenes into it. Most of those scenes happened at one time or other in the past.
The book definitely deserved the pulitzer prize it won
Agreed. And if you're not going to be at your funeral, none of us are going either. 👍😉
Every young man and boy should read it. Use it as a blueprint to base your morality on.
This classic Western wouldn’t be nearly the classic if it wasn’t for this musical score. It captures the sorrows, the triumphs, the romance, the humor and the sense of adventure perfectly.
True.
So true
Basil Poledouris can do western themes like non other.
Indeed.
And the vast country landscapes, the racing stallions, the roaring cattle, the majesty of nature in all her God-given glories.
This was a beautiful story with a haunting score. My son, who had lifelong physical disabilities, watched this every chance he got. I had the music played at his funeral two days ago. It was perfect.
Sorry about your son's passing. I pray that he is in a place now as beautiful and free as this music represents.
My prayers for you and your son. May his memory be a blessing.

Lonesome dove the best TV movie I have ever seen. Robert Duvall the best performence. I'm from Poland
Some things get better with age. “Lonesome Dove “ is one of them. A classic that every generation should know.
Robert Duvall's characters in two scenes in two separate movies shattered me and he wasn't the one who spoke. rude behavior

Or rude behavior, for that matter.
I agree I acted like the Calvary man that got beat up and regret it every day but I'm different when it comes to my kids
I read the book first and hated when it ended. I cried when Gus died and got the pages all wet. The min-series did the book justice, which is rare.
Not very many book-to-screen adaptations can say that, but the whole series including Comanche Moon and Dead Man's Walk have whole passages and conversations word-for-word with only a few changes overall.
Lemme tell you bout Arthur Morgan 😥
My Dad was a Texan. Every thing about this movie was so great and real. My Dad and I watched this together too. The characters are so rich. Still makes me well up inside.....
I envy anyone watching this for the first time. It is so good.
I just got it on blu ray... Will watch it with my girlfriend during Christmas break. Can't wait!
"A man who wouldn't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough."
I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it. Long live the American cowboy.
Watched it all 30 years ago and it stands still today as an absolute unequivocal masterpiece .
Great epic story with a great cast of actors and a beautiful musical score 🙂
Agreed!!
In our hearts, we are all lonesome doves.
This movie wasnt a warning
But a beginning for future gens.
Ride with me young cowbows.

The music accompanying Gus' goodbye to Clara and "Lorrie darlin" helps take that perfect scene into the stratosphere. Broke my heart.
Me too Billy. Thanks for sharing this, it means a lot me. Best Wishes Andy in York UK
Watched this for the first time last month. Some of the best music, storyline and acting I've ever seen. Hell of a vision!
Parker you were lucky, while I watched all the John Wayne Westerns with my Dad, as much as I loved this one, we missed it.
I really do not know whats better the story the acting or the music. What say you? May be the music ? Makes me tear up every time ! What a time and place to be alive ! ! !
For some reason it makes me think of my wife who passed 12 years ago. :( :( :(

Why underrated? He's considered like one of the best of his Time. And he clearly deserves it. So, i dont think he's underrated.

Makes me feel very emotional this song
The saddest thing is that people would rather listen to rap music or Katy Perry than this music. Music that actually puts you in a mood.Oh well.
The best mini series western ever made or will be made!!! Gus is so so good love Gus!!!
Those characters will always stay with me. My grandfathers were both alive when things like this were happening.

Fantastic casting, Robert duvall, Tommy lee Jones.
Top ten best movies/miniseries ever. Without a doubt.
Favorite cowboy story of all time! Actors made all the difference! My fictional perfect man is GUS!
I saved this video to a play list and I come back and listen to every so often. One of my favorite films of all time.
The combination of story line, superb casting, soundtrack and visuals are the definition of what truly is a “Masterpiece “
Wow! What a feeling!
thats god’s country, partner.
This is just an epic mini series. Loved it 20 years ago and still do to this day.
Thank you.
We should all live our lives like Augustus.
The theme is beautiful. I can almost smell the prairie grass.
I re-watch this thing every year, now with the latest Blu-Ray version in HD. BUT the book is even better; heck 80% of the dialogue is straight out of Larry McMurtry's best selling book.
Best movie........ Best actors..... Best Soundtrack
This music hits me in my heart I'll Cherri's it till the day I die and I hope someone will play it in my funeral. I'll go happy ...its awsome
One of the best movies ever made. And that's coming from a hip-hophead who normally doesn't dig anything excessively western. But you gotta love McMurtry, no matter who you are.
You beat any woman I ever saw for taking the starch out of a man. Love that line.
The greatest western of all times, bar none.
Really enjoyed this series. I hope it continues. One of the best !'ve seen in a long time
I first saw this movie when it premiered.
The Best! Movie & Soundtrack! Changed my life forever. I love you Lauren. This will always be ours.
Amen, brother.
One of my favorite movies - make sure you watch the whole series - Comanche Moon, Lonesome Dove and Return to Lonesome Dove. EXCELLENT!
Carol Murray don't forget dead man's walk as well
The greatest story ever told and best music ever written.
Probably the best series of movies I've ever seen in my life
This theme song is going to be played at my funeral, because I've always loved the movie its my favorite and I love the music
Watching this movie makes me think about how much that i value my friends.
This song always give me happy chills.. of wonderful thoughts... This is our song... cowboy.
Great movie, great acting, great music, great everything.
Only recently rewatched LD, still as good today as the day it was made.
This is by far the best Wester ever!! I have seen it tree time (along 10 years)
I'm from Phoenix, and this piece really captures the flavor of the Southwest.
Captain Call seems a lot like the real life Charlie Goodnight. Gus may have been somewhat like Oliver Loving. Great western, and being a mini series they could work more scenes into it. Most of those scenes happened at one time or other in the past.
I have lots of western themes, but this is absolutely unbeatable, perfect, and even more perfect with a coffee at sunset,
