Oh no.. I don't agree with the old lady. The difference between human and animal is 'reason'. Human can control their desire. People have the right to wear clothes freely. No one can blame the victims. Even if they wear dressed too provocatively.

    • @doryfishie2
      @doryfishie2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Most people do not control their desires without external threat. Most people do not live in their rooms playing video games for 3 years because they'd be broke and hungry. If there was anarchy, people would do even worse than just looking. They'd rape, kill, pillage, and the only reason they might not do that to everybody is because someone else stronger or better than them would destroy them if they tried.
The law of the land keeps things under control. If they want to keep a job and a respectable social circle, they'll control themselves. Most people only control their desires because a stick will be used against them. Just because they can control themselves doesn't mean they would.
You need to improve your critical thinking skills.

      @swan98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +95

*"provocatively" is also a word made by us, humans, animals don't wear clothes, and even humans in the past didn't, for example boobs are seen as an object of men's sexual desire, but in reality their were made to feed babies, it has NOTHING to do with sexual arousal....everything is made by human society, a sexist society.*

Asian Boss seems to mostly interview people in their 20's and 30's, but rarely interviews middle aged and especially elderly people (though, the elderly are typically left out of most media conversations). This is almost certainly because younger people are more open to talking about the topics Asian Boss covers. Perhaps the location of the interviews or the age of the interviewer may also play a role in the demographic willing to be interviewed. Though no easy task, it would be really great if there was a little more effort put into seeking age diversity in the interviews. Seeing how opinion differs between generations would provide a more comprehensive perspective.

I really appreciate that the commenters are more upset about one girls opinion that "looking a girl up and down" can be sexual harassment than the two women saying that it's a woman's fault if she wears a short skirt or if they do anything that "gets men excited". No one is gonna mention that. Or the fact that a girl said that she'd be so embarrassed she'd rather go through it alone and never speak up. Or the fact that the girl literally right after says that it shouldn't be based on feeling, it should be based on an objective measurement. I couldn't whine about feminists taking over if I payed attention to that!
I guess being offended by anything vaguely "feminist" now overrides being offended about actual shit that matters, like sexual assault being this common and still so shameful that people can't be honest about their experiences and perpetrators are never really punished. Good priorities guys. Nice.

김미나 The problem is that if "actual" sexual harassment gets defined as checking out a woman from a far, basically every man would suddenly be a sexual offender. I agree that it's important to discuss the problem of sexual harassment but to do that we need clear definitions of what sexual harassment actually is. Definitions like the one this woman gave are dangerous to our society and shift the focus away from actual victims of sexual harassment.

I like the contrast of opinions between the younger and the older generation of women. The fact that younger ones don't accept that sexual harassment is their fault as compared to the older women, is proof we are moving forward as society albeit slowly - even if it may seem it's totally bleak sometimes.

I've always wondered about the normal Korean's perspective on this because of the normality of harassment in Kdramas. It seems that girls are always being dragged around by men in Kdramas and it seems not to be a big deal in a media sense. I know not a lot of Koreans watch Kdramas compared to some Americans but perhaps these Tv shows may factor into why sexual harassment occurs in Korea? (Don't get me wrong, I still love Kdramas but sometimes I get irritated by sexism or the way women are treated in them).

alex bollinger Sexism is going on not only because of men but also women.
No guy friend of mine told me to 'do it like a man.' It was actually girl who said that.
Some girls expect you to act and behave like a man and dragging your girlfriend(who is your lover other than that, it is viewed as misconduct.) not really violently but manly way is sometimes viewed as masculin behavior. I didnt do it really but some girls even fantasize on that. Those K dramas are mostly written by female writers.
My point is, that might seem like sexism in your view but It might be little different in Korea. By both men and women.

It can be difficult to say something if you feel uncomfortable in a situation. Sometimes we stiffen up or wonder “is this really happening?” Everyone should practice saying “no” firmly, so if you end up in a situation where you told them to stop and they continued, at least you can confirm that you made it clear that you were uncomfortable if you report them and have to detail what happened. Always aim to be clear and precise!

YAY ASIAN BOSS!! FINALLY, you spoke to some adults and not students and student aged ppl with very limited life experience. The 2 middle aged women you spoke to had the most informed opinions which pulled from korean work place traditions, where I personally feel the real long term harassment, and fear of talking about it, really exists. And once again the laws and rules are in place but there is no enforcement. There are enuf rules and laws, what is needed is enforcement. Its gotten better here in the USA but when I am working in seoul, its rampant....I almost can't believe what I see and hear in Korean offices. There is obviously no enforcement as the perpetrators I see do it fearlessly with no impunity....its like the USA in the 1950s or something. It's pretty shocking honestly as an American working there. It actually makes me kind of angry and it's very hard for me to keep my mouth shut. Sometimes I just can't and I rely on English speaking slang as some kind of retaliation to not be understood. Oh, for clarity, I am male and see it happen to my female co-workers who are also my best friends in Seoul, hence my anger.

You can be sexually harassed even without being touched, they can say very obscene words, and yes, some starings are too much. It isn't bad to look but there are ways and ways.
And if you keep saying that certain types of staring are not sexual harassment, it's because you've never received one of these.

    • @ajlee613

as a man, I don't think any of my male friends or I have not been checked out by a woman. sometimes it is uncomfortable even, depending on the woman. is this sexual harassment? because in this case, harassment towards men by women happens just as much... but the grossed out feeling goes away in like 10 seconds? a minute? I think considering these types of things as sexual harassment really hurts the issue. how many will take it seriously if you say "90% have been sexually harassed! they were looked at!" ??? everyone who hears this argument will see you as crazy radical person. but if you say something like 1/30 have been touched on the breasts, butt, or genital region by strangers or non-sexualy involved party, than it will be a much more meaningful statement because the number of victims are all people you can feel enraged and sympathize greatly for, no matter who you are. it is better to leave staring out of sexual harassment, since if you knew 100% nothing more would come from it, you probably would not mind right? it is the idea that "omg maybe he/she will come over here and bother me" that makes you nervous right? trust me all young men know this feeling at least a few times in their life too... unless they live under a rock. so by removing looking at someone as sexual harassment and fixing the other issues, staring can loose it's psychological damage, since you are secure that nothing will come from it. as the greater issue of actual abuse, physical action, verbal assult etc. has been addressed by society.

    • @mugan5011
      @mugan5011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Serious question, should I have denounced the girls who started at me in the past? I mean staring for a good amount of time with interest on me in 2 different occasions, not simple looks. Andrew Lee is right in all he said. There are people who have radical stances and they only hurt a cause because of that. Why we need high percentages and numbers, if we only need to understand that 1 person was psychologically and/or physically hurt for this or that action, that should be enough. By the way, there's people who doesn't feel comfortable around others and any kind of contact, even visual, might feel bad for them, in such case that should be evaluated differently.

Great video on an important topic! Here's a few of my thoughts:
    1. Acknowledging that women are sexually harassed and assaulted at disproportionately higher rates than men is NOT implying that men aren't sexually harassed! Anyone can be a victim of sexual harassment, but focusing on women simply brings awareness to the scale of the issue. Of course, I feel deeply for all those who have been sexually harassed: men, women, children, and anyone else!
    2. Additionally, this whole, "so if I put my hand a woman's shoulder, she'll accuse me of sexual harassment" argument is RIDICULOUS. In the current sociopolitical climate, that shames every woman that speaks out and views her as a potential liar, what woman in her right mind would voluntarily put herself in that situation? To be called a liar, a slut, or a girl who should have just been more careful? To be told that her skirt was too short or she had too much to drink? AND to incur court costs and potentially face her attacker? I'll tell you, of the 37% of cases that are ACTUALLY reported, between 2% and 10% of the allegations are false (in the United States at least.)
    3. And finally, what a person wears does not grant you permission to touch them! Ever! Especially if you don't know the person. I can't believe it's 2018 and some people are still acting like five-year-olds, unable to keep their hands to themselves and unable to respect others, both physically and verbally!
Regardless, thank you for such a wonderful and insightful video!

For example let's say I'm in a tightly packed area and a guy's hand just lightly brushed my butt I wouldn't think much of it but if he's literally hitting my ass or groping me then I'd count it as sexual harassment as that would make me feel really vulnerable.

I think sexual assault and harassment are not that much serious as it is in the third world countries,
Like here literally women get raped and just cannot do anything about if they do speak up they get punished by their families or tribe for bringing the shame upon them and staining their pride and honor
That's how serious it is here .
And am not really sure how serious it it's in first world countries but for sure it isn't seen there as a shame and dishonorable thing to the family of the harassed woman cuz they don't blame the victim but blame the perpetrator and the culprit.

"you asked for it" even though she was a child and didn't do anything to help her daughter. her mom and me are the only ppl who know and she doesn't want me to say anything and myself idk what to do. my friend is now 20 and her mom doesn't even look her in the eyes anymore and spends more time with her 2 sons than her.

Its interesting that you say that, because a lot of Korean men who are against the gender equality movement in Korea and questions regarding status quo of gender roles and expectations have fantasies for Japanese girls saying that Korean girls (often referred to those men as Kimchi girls) are too crazy and that's why they will go for the quiet and submissive, and more reasonable Japanese girls. Add that with their fantasies with Japanese porn that is widely available in Korea and you got a pretty twisted and unrealistic expectations that a lot of those men will have towards Japanese women (funny enough often referred to as sushi girls by the same men)

  • @Avinakayjoon

this comment section is the same as any other video talking about sexual harassment. If you've never been sexually harassed then gtfo cuz you won't understand how we feel.
    1. IT IS NEVER A WOMAN'S FAULT. Whether she's showing too much skin or talks or walks a certain way doesn't give a person the right to touch or talk to them in a sexual way. Even in Islamic countries woman are groped and cat called even tho they are FULLY covered.
    2. "It's sexual harrassment if the woman feels that it is." IS RIGHT!! People are different! If someone says somehing offensive or touches you where you feel harassed then it's HARRASSMENT
    3. The only thing that's women's fault is that we aren't able to speak out about what we experienced because society has made women think it's OUR fault for what happened when it's NOT. It is a MAN'S choice to open his mouth and say something like "you have big tits" and it's HIS brain that tells him to touch a girl inappropriately.
    4. If men can't control themselves then they shouldn't be working in jobs that require self control emotionally and physically YET woman are the ones who are told "women are too emotional and irrational to be a ______"
ugh it's 2018 and we still have to explain this shit to people
edit: i said what i said. if you feel ofdended then thats your problem not mine. im not gonna read and reply to everyone who replies to this

"The only thing that's women's fault is that we aren't able to speak out about what we experienced because society has made women think it's OUR fault" - Thats bullshit. As much as I participate with the woman but I have never seen woman getting hold down when they tell people they got harassed. In contrary people tried to support them and motivate them to go to the police and do something about it.
"It's sexual harrassment if the woman feels that it is." - That's another thing which is not that easy. How will you enforce the law with that one? Now every woman can tell the police "yeah I felt harassed" and boom the men got a case on him? That's not gonna work. If you want that, have fun with men not talking nor do anything with woman ever again. And btw. if a woman clothes herself lightly she should expect that she will get looked at more often. I'm not saying staring is fine, but men are drawn to woman. You can't prevent it.
You have to accept that there will always be pervert assholes. There's nothin humanity can do about it. The only thing we can do is to motivate woman to speak out about their experiences and to motivate them to go to the police.
Also, you are clearly underestimate the power a woman have when you falsely accuse men for harassment. You can destroy lives by doing so.

let me ask you a few questions: Are you a woman? have you been sexually abused/harassed? have you felt fear every time you walk past a group men?
have you had to look over your shoulder every 5 minutes to make sure you werent being followed while walking home at night? have you ever been told "you were asking for it" for wearing shorts during summer? have you ever been told to go home and change bc your shoulders were too "distracting"?
if the answer is no then I don't want to argue with you

    • @HMP53

      Eve
let me ask you a few questions: Are you a men? Have you ever felt like a pervert because you are walking home late night and coincidentically you share the same path with a woman? Have you ever felt like you have to defend yourself because of some perverts? Have you ever felt like a pervert because you look more than one to a beautiful woman (because woman like you call us perverts)?
Your argument "You are a men, so you cannot emphasize with woman and therefor are not allowed in this discussion" is so flawed that I actually think I won't ever read a rational thought from you.
I'm not trying to defend any criminal actions, but think about the men who tries to approach a woman in order to get a date and he fails. With the points you raised, you literally give woman the power to say "This guy harassed me".

    • @CobourgRailfan
      @CobourgRailfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Sexual assault can not be defined by what the victim feels because that is not the way criminal law works. In order to punish someone facts have to be fulfilled. This can only be achieved by having clear objective factual features that the offender can fulfill. However if this is up for the woman to decide, the offender could be convicted of a crime without having known the facts. If an offender would say nice legs it can only be seen as an offense if the criminal intended it to be degrading. If it was not intended however in spite of the how the woman feels because of it it is no criminal offense. The only way around this is by punishing the crime based on a certain action e.g. groping, pressing, references to sexual organs. Feminists just don't seem to understand the basics of how criminal law works.

Keep in mind that it's Korea and people are way more conservative than in western countries. In Korea it's not usual for people to have skinship like that so soon. E.g. men and women hugging as friends is a big deal, so is being friends with the other gender in general sometimes. While people in western countries pat someone's shoulder when they want their attention, in Korea they don't have skin contact at all.

I hope many more Koreans can have the courage to speak out because it shouldn't be swept under the covers. Punishments need to be harsher. Also I don't believe sexual harassment is based off of just feeling but verbal and physical harassment.

There were many celebrities who were accused of sexual misconduct only to be found not guilty.
If these things keep happening this will make people who are really guilty get away accusing the victim as gold digger.
So I came to conclusion that there should be more strict legal punishment not only to the perpetrator but false accuser.
Then I came to think that it will make actual victims more reluctant to brave the legal process.
Any good suggestion? I really dont know how this should be dealt with. Though we came far away from those 70's that Judge let the accuser marry the rapist...

It can or may never exist in the future. Now danger real, but fear plan insanity. Just try to acknowledge his point on it. You don't have to agree, disagree, both or none. But at least acknowledge it please

      @saravazquez5563 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Inter dictor I agree some people should be nice. But what would happen without bad? It wouldnt be acknowledge. Then the world would go out balance. We need peace and violence to survive. Peace brings a great ending for example what Martin Luther king jr. Did. Then violence is a faster action like how Hitler killed off alot of homesexauls, jews, and other labeled people. We need both those things to survive. Even god sees bad and good. Eve only saw bad and good cause a clever snake basically told her god lied u won't die by touching the fruit on the main source tree. He just doesn't want u to see how he sees things. So eve at the fruit off the main tree. Later Adam realize he was ashamed to be naked, but with only good he wasnt. I see we need good, but I truly think we need both.

As one of the interviewee said, for there to be laws and regulations against sexual harassment, there needs to be an objective set of standards of what counts as harassment. I do believe that a certain way of looking at someone such as if someone was staring at you and scanning you up and down, can be counted as harassment. Of course, just slight glances would be extremely hard to make a case for harassment and if someone was just really standing out of the norm, it might be really difficult not to glance. But, someone really intensely glaring at a certain body part longer than a certain period of time I think could be made for a case given the evidence. Also, having a law on something works as preventative measure and a way to clearly state a standard, and when there is a law that states that unwanted gaze can be counted as sexual harassment, it could prevent a lot of the unwanted stares that people get.

General tip, do something on the spot, like I don't know, tell them to stop or hit them or whatever. Things to expect from this comment section:
    1. Men complaining about the one woman who said looking is sexual harassment.
    2. Women complaining about that supposedly being the only thing men took from the video.
    3. People (like me) bringing up how predictable the comment section is.
I'm gonna address these one at a time here.
    1. Fellas, quit looking for things to point at and say, "That's ridiculous! Women are over-reacting!" These women are not trying to attack you. Yes, compared to being groped and dry-humped on a subway, which is what one woman pointed out was her experience, simply being looked at seems like a pretty light issue. But that doesn't change the fact that there are lots of women who do get harassed. You can't discredit all of the women who have experienced sexual harassment because of what a few women might be defining as harassment when it might not be. Furthermore, you need to take into consideration that if a woman has been harassed, all it might take is a man looking at her a certain way for her to get nervous and worry it might happen again. You gotta stop thinking that these women are trying to antagonize you. They're not. They're trying to speak up on a serious issue. This is not an attack on men. It's a defense for harassment victims.
    2. Ladies, I'm gonna tell you right now... Probably 95% to 98% of all the men who watch this video believe whole-heartedly that sexually harassing a woman is bad. The reason many of them get so defensive is that they feel that as a man they're being told that they're the problem, and that they need to change, even when they've never sexually harassed anyone in their life. There are a lot of videos and stories in regards to womens' issues that paint men as these evil, violent, heartless creatures that prey on women and feel entitled to sex. As you can probably imagine, men don't like being painted that way; especially the ones that are not that way at all. You may say, "Then those men should realize these videos and stories aren't talking about them!" Which is true, but there's no indication of that. All they see is, "Men are evil and will hurt you." Which makes them want to defend themselves when these issues come up, thus why they tend to point out the things they disagree with instead of focusing on the things they do agree with.
To sum it up, almost all men agree with you when you say sexual harassment is bad. And if you want them to express that agreement, then the easiest way to do it is to remind them that this isn't an attack on men... It's a defense for women who have been harassed, and need to speak out; and that this issue isn't being brought up to suggest that men are evil. It's being brought up to discuss whether or not sexual harassment is being taken seriously enough. It might seem silly to need to tell them that, but if they know they're not being attacked, they'll feel more inclined to listen.
    3. My best advice to this third group of people is: Try to steer people in the right direction, and hope someone takes the time to hear you out.

I don't think it is. If you take a picture of a girl without her permission that's 5 years in jail. Most complaining is women choosing to wear revealing clothes and then having the results of being catcalled or stared, which aren't harassment. Touching is harassment. tbh women (and men too) should be allowed to carry guns like in the US. "you can't rape a .38" The burden is on the women to protect themselves (with a gun), not for everyone in the world to be nice. If you go to africa you can bet your life savings people won't be nice to you for whatever made up reason.

verbal IS NOT assault. Sure, fire them, but it isn't criminal. Physical? MAYBE, but it's VERY dangerous to compare RAPE to grabbing a tit or ass. Sure I think a guy grabbing an ass or tits is very child like, but it isn't ANYWHERE comparable to RAPE or assault!
It's also bad because these laws ignore clothing. You can't act like short skirts and cleavage are the same as burqas. Some women who ARE showing off their sexuality are assaulted and treated the same as those who aren't. Like I said, get a GUN!!!! killing machines CAN BE USED MORALLY, and like in the US, 50% of murders happen on only 5 out of 3,000 counties!!! most people don't run around shooting people!

I'm going to tell you guys a third-hand story that I heard from my sociology professor, who himself was told of it by another professor who conducted the following experiment.
This professor would draw a line down the middle of his chalkboard and label one side with "men" and another with "women". Then he'd turn around and ask only the male students in his classroom, "What do you do in your day-to-day life in order to not get raped?"
Whenever he did this experiment, he would be met with crickets. One dude would think he's funny as he raises a hand to say, "Uh, don't go to jail," and the other students would laugh. The professor would acknowledge this, and write it on the board on the "men" side, but with no other responses, he'd then turn to the ladies and pose them with the same question.
The hands would be slow to rise, but eventually most of the ladies would have their hands raised. He was met with answers like, "I carry axe," "I always lock the door immediately after entering my car, and park under a street light," and "I always let my friends know where I'm going, or take them with if I can," the responses were endless, and by the time he'd gotten through all of them, the "women" side would be completely filled.
The results were more or less the same every time he carried out this experiment, and the purpose of it was to enlighten the men in the room and make them aware this is an actual, real, visceral thing, and a problem that needs to be addressed.
I just thought more people need to hear this.

As a Korean man, Many koreans think men can be victims. Because korea society is still conservative. I think these arguments are a step toward becoming a gender equality society.

What is the measurement for harassment? How does a woman 'prove' it? Without defining these you can't really move forward or woman are the hold-all when it comes to accusations...

I think now we have the power and a lot of false accusations will go around. My friends used to joke that they can accuse people they don't like to get them in trouble because we'll all be believed these days.

I think some women were doing that before the MeToo movement even came about. What I'm curious about however, if MeToo will actually increase such incidents.

For me, I've experienced it 4 days ago, like one of the woman said "maybe the girl doesn't know it's actually sexual harassment but later she will know it". Yes, it's my case. He touched my thigh and i don't know it was sexual harassment until i told my best friend. She said that it was not normal, it was sexual harassment. And for 4 days, i though about it and make me suffered and trauma until now. Maybe you thought i'm overreacting, but he touch my thigh, second grade of vocational high school when i was working at the office. I don't want anybody touch my body except my hand's palm anymore, it was traumatic, really. I told my best friend, i told my mom, it was really embarrassing, i can't properly looked at my mom's eyes. But girl, if you experiencing the same as i do, you need to be brave, don't be afraid to tell to your best friend and tell your mom. They know the best for you:)
Sorry if my english is so bad, English is not my mother tongue :"

Thank you Asian Boss for covering this in S. Korea. I always feel its such an important topic that doesnt get talked about enough in Korea. The patriarchy is too strong there and its truly disheartening to see.

I find it so interesting to see the generational shift in mentality
The older ladies interviewed talked about the provocative clothes and attitudes as something to blame
The woman in gray said maybe they are at fault if they don't report
while the younger girls said, rightfully, that the fault is always on the perpetrator
Seeing that kind of makes me see hope. Society is evolving, and we're at the midst of it.
although, I am sad nobody mentioned education as a way to prevent sexual harassment

"I think that sexual harassment should be defined by how the woman feels."
THANK YOU. WHAT A GREAT MAN. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR SAYING WHAT NEEDED TO BE SAID.
EDIT: the point a lot of people are missing is the point of CONSENT. You grab, stare, say etc. something to SOMEONE ( because yes, this is about BOTH genders) without their consent, you have harassed or even, assaulted them.
You don't get to decide how someone feels based on your own feelings.
And for those of you bringing up the legality, notice how its very hard to be arrested for HARASSMENT? Assault is not what we're talking about in terms of this thread (although that is a whole other ballpark of dicussion) so in terms of the topic, the legality's of it have nothing to do with this thread.

Laws are made and changed based on people's feelings constantly. There is always a precedent that brings a law into effect, what decides that precedent? The lawmakers or the publics (or a combination of both) feelings on that particular thing.

Maybe someone has mentioned this before, but Kei, women is pronounced "wi-men" to distinguish it from "woman". Anyways, good video... I know sexual harassment is all too common worldwide and hopefully there will be a positive change in attitudes and behaviour over the next decade.
