I am black. Never experience such racism before, but my heart bleeds for my black brother's and sister. The world hates us, but it don't matter because God loves us.
You know growing up i ask this question and no one could give me a reasonable answer. Then i found my answer in the bible. We are God's chosen people! So they can't help it...it's in there spirit!
I’m fully black and was born in Seoul, South Korea and left when I was 11 months old. My mom tells me stories of how kind and loving Korean people were towards us and my babysitters were in love with me. I’ve worked for two different Korean families in America. They all treated me kindly and like family, especially when they found out Korea is my birthplace. I couldn’t help but notice the wife of my boss oddly treated me like I was beneath her, to the point my boss had to check his own wife. He even made fun of her at one point and called her a robot. It was like he was trying to make up for how she treated me. The other family I worked for were such angels and I still love them til this day. I can see the old school vs. new school dynamic. Korea will always have a place in my heart because I know there are truly some kindhearted people there.
Well its different in this case because they are conditioned to think a certain way. I do't particularly feel anyways towards them as I do white people in America and thats just my mindset. He who controls the media controls the mind).
funni• I just wanna point out that there r racist in every race. Same for the black who r being racist to Asians. All Asian, Black and white hv some sort of racism
傾妘蘇氏 but not all black people are racist to Asians. What you don’t get is that Asian or Korean people can be racist too though- look at 1:48 the girl claims black people are dangerous just cause of what we do in a movie. A movie is a movie.
As a Black Woman I visited Seoul in 2019' before the pandemic broke out!! And I will say this I've never been treated more Better By Koreans then anything else!! I went over to celebrate my Birthday and I was treated like a Princess there!! Everyone I came in contact with was so kind to me that I never felt such Great Hospitality from any other Race!! Naturally I can't speak for everyone else but the Koreans I meet while I was there to this day we're still in contact with each other!! So I say that to say this I made so pretty cool friends over there!!Much Love Korea 🇰🇷❤🇺🇲❤
@Chrissy Glenville Some people are stupid like that. But I guess it's the over portraying black people as gangster, poor and uneducated that pushes it to be a perception in real life, rather then it just being a movie
I visited Seoul in the late 1980's with my college music department and had a positive experience. In fact, my tour guide couldn't speak English, and I couldn't speak Korean, but we had so much fun together. He presented me with flowers at the end of our concert. I was the only one who received flowers.
It's always so interesting to hear stereotypes and perspectives from different countries. Thank you Asian Boss! *Wow! It’s been 4 years since this comment but after posting this comment I lived in Korea for a bit and I can say I don’t agree with my word choices from 4 years ago and I definitely feel that how black people are treated in Korea is more horrific than “interesting”. In Korea, even though I’m not black or white, I felt judged and unaccepted. So I definitely think that racism against black people in Korea is deeply prevalent and worse than how I was treated.
Jerome Love very true! That's why I said interesting, because I don't agree with their stereotypes but it's interesting to hear them so we can learn to be less judgmental
Jessica Jackson Honestly coming from a black person I don’t 100% trust this video especially considering asian boss tends to reword what they say to make it seem more toxic
I mean yeah the younger gen is playing into all types of stereotypes and they said the older gen is more racist. But to be fair is not all of them and even tho the younger gen is ignorant as hell as least they didnt seem to have any actual hate toward black people. Also dont think people are getting lynch or nothing out here which is more than you can say for the deep south of america
KD you have to play devils advocate huh...I never said other races don’t face racism. But we have been oppressed and killed just for being black for centuries. Please get off my post with that

A lot of clubs in Seoul straight up Africans or even dark skinned people from non-African countries. I even remember walking past this one bar that had a sign up that said "No Africans because ebola"...this was well after the whole ebola craze died down. It's always goofy watching most Koreans celebrities, kpop singers and their fans dress and act black when this sort of racism fairly open in their culture.
I agree. Reading the comments is always fun. :) It is a shame that people have to be so racist in 2017 (or any year for that matter, like 2019). Makes me not want to go to Korea in the future (I am brown, but still). I know most are accepting, but the population is like 97% Korean, and not used to seeing people of other races.
They were taught to call them people black .Theres no such thing as black people .They call them black because of their mental state .black means the absence of light . light symbolizes knowledge .So here in America they call my people black because they lack knowledge of who they are , so they are rejected and looked unpon as undesirables .Its a great Sin for people to be on this earth and not know who they are . So when they call us black the are saying we have no knowledge of ourselves . Slavery took away the knowledge of who they are .These people who call themselves black are Asiatic people .black describes a mental state not a skin complexion .These people have a Olive complexion .All people of hue has an Olive shade except pale skin people who you call white . Pale skin people are not white . The pale skin people have fooled the whole world . The have the people of India wanting to be white or light skin .We understand this because the British ( pale skin people ) used to rule India , so they taught the people of India to like light skin people . .
I'm glad that I subscribed to this channel. Just to hear people from another culture having a more honest conversation than I would hear if I was standing there or asking the questions gives a lot more insight for me. It just adds nuance.
Its a natural thing for humans to want to feel better or above something or someone else, and to feel uncomfortable with something different from you. Its not, however, okay to stay this way. As humans we have the capacity to overcome this normal reactions and check ourselves. But as I said, it will always be a thing in any society.
The solution seems pretty simple to me. At least part of the solution would be to stop portraying black people so negatively in the media and in movies and start making it mostly positive. It's hard because people in charge of making these movies and funding the news companies are mostly white. That's why movies like black panther are so important to us. It irks me to see white people say why do we need more black super heroes and role models. Well, this is why
@@ArcadeEraBeats That's barely true at all! White people are more likely to be portrayed more negatively in the media than they actually are, especially blond women and chubby white men. In my experiences you're actually portrayed better in the media than in real life.
They don’t care about taking resources from hard working black people. Where on earth has black labor and resources and talent ever solved racism? We are for entertainment and resources, but not to be respected as regular humans.

Been to Korea twice, no one seemed to care I was African American. Everyone I met just helped my lost self find places, buy train tickets, find my seat at the movies, and tell me good places to eat. When I attempted to read or speak Korean signs on the bus, train, underground malls, people helped me without hesitation 😃.

Chinese people stopped bowing since cultural revolution and only do so now to pay respect to the dead. So if you bow to Chinese, you are essentially saying they are dead, and being superstitious, would be offended. Koreans and Japanese still bow as sign of respect or when they apologise.
@@sashakarasawa5794 what about the dead is not true? Well tbh I'm not entirely sure what Chinese in Mainland do. But my family do the half bow if the decease is not family. Even at weddings now the foreign born ones are cutting out the bowing except to the parents as it takes too long.
I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this video. They were asked to list stereotypes, so they stated what the stereotypes were. They didn't say they believed those stereotypes. It seems like quite a few of them acknowledge the discrimination black people face within their own country. They never said that they believed that the discrimination was justified. It's kind of weird how many people misunderstood the video.

My boyfriend is Korean. His mom, oh boy. Doesn't even want me in her house. Our first meeting I brought her flowers, we spoke about my family history, which includes having a Chinese grandmother who ran a women's college, everyone in my family went to university and had a good career in the fields of math and science. Good family background, educated, a good job. I make a point to get her gifts whenever I see something nice and I'm out with my boyfriend. And still she'll like call my boyfriend is she knows he's out with me and make up a crisis. Like she'll need him to drop her off at a sick friends house many a Friday night, or suddenly need to get something shew forgot to pickup from the grocery store at 10 pm. His dad now takes it to a new level, every time he goes to visit him at a restaurant, they always just happen to run into "a nice Korean girl" who just happens to be the daughter or niece of a very good friend of his.

The gifts for her aren't for her so much as for myself, so I know I've taken the higher road and made a real go helping move along the family dynamics. Being from Jamaica I am a multi racial person. I loved my Chinese grandmother as much as I loved my Cuban grandmother and black grandfathers. I will not hold any part of my heritage in any less regard than another. I'm proud to be Jamaican. Prince Winthorp Regis Babatumbai chaboka the III Your theory on my boyfriend is probably correct. He has some growing up to do. I'm not sure why you're do focused on the self hatred theory though. I love my skin colour, it's the same as my mother's and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Race is a concept that has gotten too out of hand, culture is more my interest. I mentioned it because this video is about one cultures perspective on another's, so I thought to share my own experiences. While I find my boyfriends family unsupportive, I certainly don't lose sleep over their opinions as I know they're misguided. I've had a chance to live the culture of my parents and grandfathers, but not my gandmothers, so yes there is a fascination there because I want to learn about the experiences they had as they didn't live long enough to tell me themselves. The amount of venom in your words suggests you're the one who needs help.
I’m Korean and I feel as if some people can be rude and racist. Which is so sad...I want everyone to feel welcome in Korea I am really sorry for who had gone through racism in our country.
I wanted to vist bc I'm mix. I have dark skin but I have "asian" eyes. I know korean. So I try to talk to my asian aunt and they said they dont wanna talk to me. In less I bleach my skin. MY whole other side of my family hates me bc my skin color. It so hard to find self love bc all of people hate me bc my skin color
As an Asian myself, It's pretty scary how black people don't understand asian culture at all yet they accuse us for not accepting blacks into their community. There is nothing wrong about wanting to be within your own community of color where you speak the same language and share the same culture bc it is everyone's right to choose who they want to be around. I have had a experience where my father was shot and killed by a black male at his store even after he gave him all the money in the cash register. I understand that there are bad people in every race, but I don't understand why my dad, along with many other asian businesses in my community have always been targeted mostly by black americans. I also have a dear friend who is asian, and she has been raped by a black male one night while walking back to her apartment in Atlanta many years ago. I cry at night sometimes bc I know she is not okay and she will never be the same, and there is nothing I can do to help her to undo what happened that horrible night. These personal experiences of mine with black americans since childhood are not stereotypes but actual events that happened and is still happening in asian communities all around the US but I don't understand why nobody talks about this. It's culture that shapes people's behaviors, and when it comes to black culture they praise this ideology that being a gangster is somehow cool. I've lived in black neighbor hoods and a lot of the people I've tried to interact with seemed as if they had no conscience at all, which shocked me. You can't judge an entire race but you can judge a majority of a race by their culture and values. For example, Asian culture encourages people to get a higher education to live a better life and it's not a stereotype that many of us have achieved a higher income status through hard work. It's irresponsible and dangerous for society to always succumb and allow blacks to have such a powerful platform whenever they claim to be the victim whether on social media, movies, and television shows bc the misguided ideology of the black spokesperson will prey and brainwash on the naive young minds of asian women or any women who have absolutely no idea how dangerous and violent black communities really are.
I completely agree with what you said, and the reason those “facts” don't make in the mainstream media here in the US, is because everyone is scared of speaking the truth in the US in fear of being called racist. The word “racist” has become a main weapon for cancel culture, to use on anyone or any organization that do not agree with them. Imagine a news media point out the “fact” there are more blacks in prison in the USA than other race, while they only make up 13% of population! That news media will be called racist and closed down. Everyone is scared of blacks. One time on TH-cam some guy,I assume black person was mocking me ,saying go eat fish and rice, so I replied go eat your chicken wing and guess what? My comment was deleted real quick while his still on! Politicians need their votes, business need their money..etc. so they kiss their behind. That's how it goes. I wouldn't be surprised if yours or my comment will be deleted soon!
Most people won't get direct racism in a foreign country that isn't diverse but you will still get looks from them either in a curious or hateful way. Very unlikely that someone will go up to you and be racist. They will show fake respect but mask their true feelings, especially in countries like Korea where the culture is to be polite and respectful even if it's not sincere. Not all people but a lot of them
@@j86485 Well, i have seen direct racism in Korea several times and indirect all the time. What surprised me the most is the direct racism was mostly from younger people (both men and women). Older people are more subtle but in many cases were more welcoming.
Why is this question even being asked??? This isn’t important to us. We don’t need or want anyone’s acceptance or approval. This is isn’t necessary. I don’t know anyone that sits around worrying about what others think of them. Maybe the question should be reversed since they imitate our culture, music, dress, slang, etc. & then call it “pop culture” in an attempt to separate whatever they like of it from the blackness that created it. K pop & the popularity of hip hop in Asia is a result of this. They copy us, we do not copy them.
I wish people would realize that being black isn't always about athletics. Not all of us can run fast, play basketball or football. Some if us have other individual skills and hobbies, just like any other person on this planet. Additionally, there's nothing wrong in coming from Africa, and it's nothing humiliating about it. Some of us come from North America, and even different parts of Europe, just as everyone else comes from different parts of the world too. "Big Black Bro/Sis" can be seen as racist because acknowledging that the person is black is heavily unnecessary. It would be the same as "Big Asian Bro" or "Big Hispanic Sis": uncalled for. But "big bro/sis" is understandable, because it shows endearment. The fact that black people are still not seen as equals to everyone else in this world irks me. Hopefully everyone comes to understand that our struggles should too, be acknowledged, and that we deserve the same treatment as everyone else. Please do not allows forms of entertainment media (movies, cartoons, TV, and advertisement) to shape the way you think. Always aim to widen your horizons and gain a deeper understanding of everything. Plus, check ya facts.
A few things: 1. "The fact that black people are still not seen as equals to everyone else in the world irks me," What evidence do you have that Koreans see "everyone else" as equal? There are so many races in the world, why do you assume that EVERYONE else gets better treatment? Chinese, Indian and Pakistani, for example...they ALL get treated better than blacks by South Koreans? I'd love to see your evidence for that. 2. "Please don't allow forms of entertainment media shape the way you think," um...? In a country where 96% of the population is Korean, you recognize perhaps the ONLY way some of them will ever see/experience a black person is through media? On "movies, TV or advertisements" that black people have WILLINGLY chosen to appear in to project themselves in a particular way? I mean, that's what media is for right? You comment consists of overdramatic, exaggerated generalizations. Interesting how that mindset has similar roots with racism. How ironic.
It's still crazy to me how Korea seems so heavily affected by media. Korea is obviously an advanced and capable country so I don't understand how so many of them really believe what they see on tv.
I mean isn't everyone affected by the media? A lot people who like kpop and kdramas think that's what Korea is all about when that is not the case. I think people are unaware how much the media affects people.
kaly What? I live in America with blacks. Its not media!!! Its true. They have stereotypes for a reason. Same as people think Asians are smart. Is rioting made up by media? And for some reason they dont like asian men.
kaly just because you're a technologically advanced society, doesn't mean anything.. they grew up living in a society very much like Japan where everyone is of the same color and race, that's why they only have media to make observations with.. it's a totally different story if you were raised in places like America or the UK
Jaxson Gage Not really, not whites. Their stereotypes aren’t really bad and are targeted as jokes. And Asians aren’t. It’s most Middle East black and mexicans
This made me really sad... i am currently learning Korean to show my appreciation and respect for the culture and would like to go to korean one day but uh... I don’t think I’d be very welcomed and that saddens me
At least you know now. I would rather you be sad after seeing the video verses being there and experiencing it face to face. Sadly, the people in the video know they are being prejudice but do not care. To them they rather be followers of evil than treat people with respect.

Amber Carroll Have you been to japan? I’m black haven’t been but I do have some friends (who are black as well) who have been and said they were treated like with great respect by not only the women but the men too
3:29 “First, they are black... people call them that because of their skin color.” My skin color is not black. I am brown, and there are a variety of brown shades in our race. There are some extremely light folk as well as dark. There are people who have lighter and darker skin. If you compare the darkest person you can find they with a black cloth or paint they will be lighter. Our skin is not black.
The Dankest Betty White- What you said is true. But black is associated with various negatives such as fear, mystery, violence, death, evil, and aggression, authority, and rebellion. While the word white is an inherently positive word. It is associated with, virginity, innocence, light, goodness, heaven, safety, brilliance, illumination, understanding, cleanliness, faith, beginnings, sterility, spirituality, possibility, humility, sincerity, protection, softness, and perfection. (Btw I looked it up)There is a clear distinction of meaning between the two. It is clear that even some black stereotypes remain in the name of our race. Moreover, white people are also called Caucasian. But what's another term for black people? African American? But the term only refers to Americans that are African. But I am black, and I don't know my ancestry. Should I be called African American? Jamaican American? Trinadian American? Overall I am black, but do not know where I come from. Then am I called black American? But I dislike the the meaning. So what should I be called? I am trying to convey that white people can be called Caucasian if they dislike the term white. But what can black people like me be named if they don't like the term black?
Although there is judgment passed around Korea, I feel like the individuals being interviewed had a broader view on matter to be able to break the questions down like that and answer truthfully. Props to them👏

Legobloz because being black is already something for them to laugh about. Because we’re apparently poor and uneducated. It’s condescending. Adding black isn’t necessary is it? No. But no matter how you feel about it, if someone doesn’t want others to call them by that phrase, then people should respect that. And that’s the problem, they don’t. Because it’s “funny” or they’re trying to fit in with black ppl because it’s “cool”. Funny how people steal black culture but bare black ppl isn’t it?
The portraying society and the stereotypical movies and films really solidifies people in the mindset of these things. Don't call it a shame, it's something we must obviously change
@@policysocial7792 that's an excuse. At the end of the day, the people have the God given intelligence to judge for themselves especially with the internet existing.
@@rickeybernard8156 I don't think you realise that foreigners have a different stream of social platform to Asians, especially China, Japan, and South Korean. Korean's internet base is extremely isolated from the rest of the world, even for news. Even more, the language difference just blocks out any sorts of understanding of other countries. As for myself, I am indeed South Korean as I was born in Seoul, who lived in Korea for 6 years. During my trips forth and back from New Zealand to Korea, it made me to realise in how separated this country is compared to such countries like America. I think the major issue is about the language difference, and how the media portrays things. It's not an excuse, yet just a simple reality and the world we live in. I respect your religion and how God has given the talent for people to judge, but I think that is quite irrelevant. It is no difference saying "The starving African kids should now how South Koreans look because God has given intelligence", because that is just simply not true. I don't think you should even bring God into this subject as people have different beliefs and different experience, I say this as I am a Christian who believes in the existence of God, thus, it deduces me to saying that your point doesn't help to transfix the world to our ways, and that my "excuse" is quite valid.
I think its because korea itself was underdeveloped before the UN helped them out of the war, so they're triggered by their own fears. I apologize if anyone is offended by the material in this video.. Hopefully things will change
First, Im korean and i apologize what they said ....Im sure the people in a video are so uneducated and ignorant .. this video and the comments make me so frustrated bc all korean don’t think like these people, what they r saying is just their stereotypes affected many medias. Many korean have few opportunities to connect foreigners and to study abroad so they see black people are good rappers, singers and have good bodies from tv, movies and music. In my case, i have stayed about 2 years in America. Before i go there, my mom didn’t want me to go bc there are many black people in a town that i lived!!! And my mom told me blacks are dangerous and disrespectful to asians. That kinda made me having fear in my mind. But I thought it is wrong to judge them just hearing what mom said so I didn’t change my decision. And i made many memories with Americans:)When i came back to korea, i told my family that how black people are nice and funny to change their perspective , now my parents have right thoughts like me. Probably the elderly in Korea still have stereotypes to black like my grandmother does. But most of them never met foreigners in their life..that’s why they just see foreigners in the way they feel. There is no help for it.... Sadly, I saw many ironic comments.. Even though the people in the video are racists, y’all can’t do like them .. people who wrote the racism comments toward asians are identical with them in this video..stop hating!! There are racists in which country yall visit not only korea. When i was in America, everyday two black guys said very shameful and racial discriminative jokes to me. Then i got angry to them, NOT TO BLACK. Don’t hate a particular race! It’s an individual awareness ! RESPECT everyone!
Complex Ez so many kids my age listen to these rappers (mainly African-American) talking about drugs sex money cars etc and that's all they see. I can't stand those types of "artists" as they literally do what a "stereotypical" black person is assumed to do. This isn't making it any easier for black people like me that are nothing like this but are being stereotyped this way as a result the them. They aren't doing themselves any favours they're just living up to the expectations that most white middle aged American men have of them instead of breaking stereotypes and over coming the status quo
Truth N Justice you know what makes a person commit crimes is either income inequality / poverty. I think because of the American history the African-American guys face a lot of unemployment. Maybe now this problem is no more but racial discrimination does exist and i guess this makes them choose the easier way.
This is why media is so important always displaying us in a negative way people take notice it’s not any of these people fault at all. It’s our media and it’s sad
Chen Wang what are you taking about? And if that’s the reason to dislike awhole race of people that ignorant on your part! Really sad you don’t even know me. You should try to educate yourself on different types of people and actually get to know them instead of judging them over something like the color of their skin
Also, black people aren’t the only ones that talk about Asians “private parts” so you need to get that together it’s a stereotype join the club all races have them

Black people are BEAUTIFUL, they are family oriented, they believe in caring for others, the media, movies and some of the music today doesn’t do just to the black men and women today, because they are worth more than what the media has portrayed them to be, they hurt just like all other races, they love and care like other races, I pray we all live in PEACE!🙏🏽🇺🇸🎊🎉🍾🌹🥂
@Oofercado If that was the case you wouldn't be listening to kpop and drooling all over those idols you love so much. In today's hook up culture, you can't tell me that most people aren't "looks first, personality second".
Mostly only whites look good. You find black ppl with curly hair, black skin and flat looking face good looking ? I am black too and all the stuff i said applies to me .
well damn u should u r going to love it there this video its ridiculous every other country has a little bit of racism and those ppl in the video they just want to look good than any other ppl its not the truth not all koreans are like that about 15 percent of korea is racist cuz of the elderly ppl whos old fashioned
Im korean guess what. No one cares about foreigners or black ppl bcz everyone is Busy and many are not racist anymore bcz south korea has so many foreigners that its Daily life
Sheeba true. I was in Korea for 2 years back in 03-05 and I experienced little to no racism. The US is far more racist. I’d say what I experienced was more curiosity and unfamiliarity as I traveled to many places not used to foreigners; ie the real Korea and no much Seoul which is foreigner heavy. I actually felt safer there than I do at home. I even drank soju with an on duty officer who had some soju and shot glasses in the trunk of his patrol car. You will have fun in Korea trust me.
@@endykapini1115 How though? I don't see Asians lynching and hating black people calling them bros. It's generally the not the racist older generations calling them that lol
When I lived in Asia I have a really negative perception of black people because of what I saw from the media but when I went to the US to study, I met A LOT of nice black people :) When I landed at the airport, I came alone and didn;t know anyone in the US so i was scared and nervous but then my taxi driver was a very friendly older black male with such positive attitude that made me feel so much better. I will never forget that man for giving me such great first impression of being in the US
Amazing that such a positive post has no comments so far but mine. I had a similar experience when visiting South Korea, only it was the person after the taxi driver that was so unforgettable. The taxi driver turned out to be a real jerk, but the young lady I spoke with after him was simply delightful. Her honesty, sincerity and respect for another human being who just happened to have skin pigmentation darker than hers just melted my heart. She came along just in time to prevent me from developing a negative stereotype about all Koreans. A valuable lesson learned in my youth. Don't damn a whole race of people because of one idiot.
Like it or not, we all discriminate against someone for no good reason. It doesn't have to be about race, it can be anything. Look at Northern Ireland. It is about Religion. Their Religions differ only on fine points, but that is enough to hate and kill each other over. Yes, I know there are many other factors but the divide is religion. We all feel superior to someone or some groups .
I am Indian and I really love black people. Because when I was 10yrs old I did dance performance (kuchipudi) and there were black and white people. Black people were very friendly with me. And encouraged me. I felt soo happy. I Love black people to be honest they are soo good. Sorry for my bad English because I am only 13 now☹ I love everyone too. We are living in one world so we have to be good to everyone and should stop judging.
kim garyung It’s no so much about being asked to apologize... but being black has been treated as a negative thing and many were forced to change themselves and downplay their blackness in order to be accepted and taken seriously. So the term being “ unapologetically black” comes from a movement where black ppl started to refuse assimilation and racial shaming.
@@gabrielvaldes-ramos6980 Race, yes. But racism doesn't. People hate others because they don't take the time to understand them. Regardless of where you come from, everyone is human.
There's a difference between colorism and racism and both are bad in Korea and many other countries. In korea you could be Korean but say your skin tone is darker/tanner you'd still be judged, if you're a whole other race...discriminated, if you're mixed korean...it don't matter. Some societies can't see past race and color... to answer your question yes we are human, but we are all different in terms of backgrounds and looks, but in the end we are all the same some just have corrupt minds, thoughts, and perceptions of the different kinds of "us". Hopefully in the future this all changes but for now sadly there are so many wrong labels, categories, boundaries but what's not wrong is you. You, me anybody else we are not messed up it's the world we live in.
I came back to this because I'm a black woman who just loves the Korean culture, maybe I have a strong desire to marry a Korean boy because of his politeness. I've never been hopeful and scared in my life
I'm korean too, and I don't have those flawless and pale skin that most Korean has and I think it makes me unique. Every skin color is beautiful because it's so unique.
The fact that you said "flawless pale skin" tho.... Every skin tone is flawless in its own way.... Pale skin is flawless, dark skin is flawless, white brown etc still flawless
yup. racism isn't necessarily hateful and nobody would ever admit to being racist. it can come from good intentions, but it mostly comes from ignorance.
If it comes from good intentions then it's not racism. That word has been beaten so far out of its original meaning that no one even knows what it means anymore.
@Sainte Jeanne d'Arc Why can't racism have good intentions? Everyone believes they're the hero of their own story. Even an antinatalist believes the human race should go extinct because they think their beliefs are righteous and just.
Racism doesn't have good intentions, it's malevolent. Look, racism now means what anyone w/ an agenda wants to tell you it means. All it is is a marxist manipulation tool to shut you up or make you dance and give whatever they demand.
@J Can du Did you watch the video? The people being interviewed in the video are not fratists. In fact, they think fondly of Sam Okyere and welcome him to South Korea.
@Sainte Jeanne d'Arc And of course, it's only a coincidence that you're trying to tell me what racism means, you would never have a political agenda! :) You have good intentions...
In my experiences, I noticed that people with low self esteem tents to be the one make a derogatory remarks to a total stranger. I smile and wave at them and walk away.
I love black people so you don't have to worry about those who hated black. God bless you, there are people that loves black people like me. And i personally think that black people are hot and beautiful.
23490417 98234098 your stats 😂😂😂😂 stop using neo nazi sites. if you want to know in usa blacks are more likely to be arrested and given harsher sentences for same crimes committed by whites. crime stats don't show the true stories. deep rooted institutional racism is real
Lool you're not even trying to hide that you have something against black people. Do you personally know ALL(100%) of black people in America and UK for saying something like that ? Are you really saying that all black people sell drug or shooting people? with what You said in previous comment I'm sure you didnt even travel to Africa yet, you categorize a whole race for the behaviour of few.
I wasn't going to watch this video because I'm moving to Korea in a few weeks to teach and didn't want to see anything negative, but this was a well done interview. I do wish you would've asked them more about getting their perceptions about a whole race of people from media (similar to your Korean drama vs real korea interview). I also don't understand the Big Black Bro/Sis thing. Would it be ok if I called them "my little yellow bro/sis" no matter their age and status? It seems like I would be calling them inferior to me/talking down to them...EDIT: what I'm trying to say is if flipping the language seems inappropriate, then it probably isn't the best language to use for everyone involved . Black people don't want to be put on pedestals or be given titles for no reason. We just want to be treated like individual human beings that have different experiences, that you would learn about if you talk to us. Again great job, and thanks for the interview.
Good luck! Remember that these interviews only reflect a small part of what's going on in Korea. It doesn't mean you'll be treated poorly. I really hope you have a great experience.
sugarwaters Well the situation we use the term "Heuk Hyeong (Big(=older) black bro)" or "Heuk Nuna(big(=older) black sis)" is when we admire or envy black people's superiority especially on music and sports. As we use "Hyeong" for close older male friends and "Nuna" for close older female friends, "Heuk Hyeong(Big black bro)" and "Heuk Nuna(Big black sis)" are, in a way, the way of showing their familiarity and closeness towards black people. But I do understand those can be discriminatory, by categorizing certain groups of people with their skin color(because "Heuk" means black). This insensibility on racial discrimination in Korea comes from ingnorance because Korea is extremely homogeneous society. BUT, believe me. As the interviewees in this video, Koreans are getting sensible on racial discrimination issue and willing to embrace foreigners to their society. Okyere Samuel, the guy who shared his discriminated experience at the beginning, was an international student from Ghana, and now he is one of the beloved celebrities in Korea.

When I lived in China (vastly different country, I know, but bear with me) people called each other "brother" or "sister" regardless of how related they were; especially in regards to children; I suspect that other asian countries may have a similar culture of familiarity in name-calling (if I'm wrong do tell me, I'm curious to know). But, based on what I know, calling someone a familial name is rather widely accepted; though shouting it at a random stranger would be considered odd if it were between two Chinese strangers. Again, not sure how that translates to Korean culture, but when I heard it in the interview, I was not surprised at all.
Theres one korean person I know and he is a mate back in high school. He was a cool person and we played dota 2 together. He was a cool mate and never treated me different cuz I was darker skin than them. I love Korean people too, dont know much about the language but the ones who moved from Korea to NZ are really nice people too.
I like how honest they are. If you asked people in America they'd pretend like they're not racist at all and don't know any stereotypes. I'm not proud of it but when I see someone who's black or of colour certain thoughts and stereotypes come to mind and I recognize that. But I was taught that the first thought that comes into your mind is what you're conditioned to think, and the second thought is what defines who you are.
@guiding star Most people I know are black. Most people I know are really skinny or too fat. Black people are not natural athletes... The only reason you think that is because all exposure that you have to black people is through TV. Most TV actors and entertainers are pretty buff, assuming all of us are like that is a stereotype. I don't blame you, though. The human mind tends to exaggerate on the characteristics of the unknown and blow it out of proportion for no reason
As a black girl who visited South Korea in May for 3 weeks, I travelled to Seoul, Busan and Jeju. I must say that I had mixed emotions. I really didn't feel discriminated by the older generation AT ALL. So many old guys would help me when I was lost and even with limited English they were all very polite. The old ladies on the train would always smile and say "you are pretty" or say "hello". Those that made me feel out of place were young Korean people age range between 20 - 30. They would just stare sooo much and point at you. They spoke very loud (don't be offend if you understand Korean, Korean people don't filter out their thoughts at their own either lol) whilst pointing at your direction. Other moments I would have is that people think because I was black that somehow I could rap, sing or beatbox. Tell me that I'm not too black so Korean people would feel less afraid of me and twice and I can't even believe this even happened but TWICE at two separate occasions two girls actually picked their dogs up while taking them for a walk, held the dogs super close to their chest and kept looking behind them while I walked past. When I walked past they put the dogs down. TO ANY KOREAN PEOPLE READING..... I DO NOT WANT TO WASTE MY MONEY FEEDING AND PROVIDING FOR YOUR DOGS WHEN I CAN BARELY FEED AND PROVIDE ME LOL I really didn't like Seoul as much as I wished I did, but I will still return to Seoul again in August next year for 3 weeks as I can't base my feelings on a short holiday.
Hahaha, who would steal someone's dog, that's the dumbest thing to be afraid of. I'm sorry that you had to face that, when I was in South Korea I had a lot of stares because I'm 6'4" and stood out like a sore thumb. But it must feel so much worse when people are actually afraid of you for no reason, I can't really imagine what that feels like. Also, when visiting Korea, it is much nicer if you travel with someone who lives there, the city is a social place, and there isn't much to do as a tourist.
They think that you're trying to steal their valuable dogs to make stew. Uneducated Koreans assume that everyone in the world enjoys eating delicious dogs like they do.🐶
As a black man, i wouldn't treat you as less at any point, if we're friends if we're together i have your back, regardless, i love korea, if i see someone is not comfortable i would reassure them that its ok
@arturoenriquez7556 wait how the hell did her not wanting to pay turn into that? Honestly they get it from other countries tbh, that word is taught, I am confused, i think she thought he was being kind, but the R word nope, I don't want any parts of that story lmao
I personally think some Koreans can be racist towards black people because of the color of our skin and also because we used to be slaves and people looked down on us . I think you shouldn’t let the persons physical appearance or past define them because people can always change and become better over time.
YoFav TheBest Mabye. I personally think it's because you guys got stuck with the worst stereotype. Since there's not much black people over there, they believe it.
im sick of hearing "the media this", "the media that ". that was acceptable 10/15 years ago but it's 2017 there are so many other mediums other than traditional media now. also the fact that they know that its the media portraying black people negatively yet still hold those stereotypes, annoys me. EDIT: This in regards to millenial koreans. i can defo understand why elder koreans would have that mentality
I do understand your point, but one of the key characteristics of new media is "active recievers". To get the information on specific area from new media, one should actively search the topic first. As long as the receiver is indifferent of that certain topic, main source of information is still traditional media. In that sense, traditional media still has its influence and can create stereotypes.
its funny because every image they obtain from the media is positive about black people maybe 1 or 2 examples might be different but korea has stolen so much from black culture the reason why people still hold these prejudices its honestly all white peoples fault....
i understand that its an homogenous society but holding the stereotype even while knowing it's untrue is confusing. like if you know its not true, why continue believing it?
As i've said, unless having a chance to aware certain idea of someone is stereotype and wrong, they really don't care or almost impossible to realize that they have certain notion on something especially when the issue is very unfamiliar with. In that sense, this video clip can be a beginning of considering discrimination issue seriously. Don't be too harsh on them.
I served a tour in Seoul first of all that was the best experience of my life so far, my fellow Korean soldiers or KATUSA's were vary polite and down to earth. The civilians were extremely respectful helpful and curtious. There was a default level of respect in that country that stretched from the very young to the very old. The people there approached me with curiosity at best and fetishistic at worst. I will say that as a whole they do buy into stereotypes from what they see on TV but I'm pretty sure everyone does on some level. The worse it got was my surrogate family basically thinking I would explode if the chicken I was eating wasn't fried lmao but other then that living in south Korea was the absolute best I've ever been treated in my life as a black man. Five stars would recommend. I may go back there to find a wife.👍🏿
I think the problem is the Korean system. People are too busy focusing on the maths/english/sciences than educating the Korean people with their Geography and Politics and history. Black people are more than just sport players and musicians, you need to study the history of them to understand why black people (specially in America) are predominantly in the music/sport industry. You have to learn and understand the effects of slavery & Jim Crow & post-slavery America. Black people were limited (are still limited today) with the things they were able to do. So its really ignorant to base a whole race off of what you see in the media. What kind of person would i be if i judged Koreans based on kpop-idols & the fact that Korea is most known for it's high rates of plastic surgery? What if i thought South Korea and North Korea were the same & treated their people the same. You see i too was never taught in school about Asia in general, let alone Korea, but for people to base things off of media is really horrible. Another thing to understand is you can't just say "Africa", there are 54 countries, be more specific when talking about African people. Another thing is, African-Americans don't represent all of Africans.. again there are 54 countries. People need to understand Africa isn't a unprivileged continent because the people are dumb or poor, you need to learn its history to understand why it is the way it is. Every country in Africa was colonised (except Ethiopia & Liberia) by predominantly white Europeans, so in order to judge a whole continent and its people you need to understand the effects of post-colonisation. Learn about the drug war, because black people didn't just "get into drug dealing", drugs were put in black neighbourhood by white Americans to segregate and deteriorate black people in America. Another thing that really bothers me is the fact black are known, and this is a historically proven fact, the most discriminated against & most killed race in all of history, so for people to assume that black people are the "dangerous" ones is gross. I highly recommend that Koreans and everyone as a matter of fact to educate themselves instead of judging a whole race based on American media. Nevertheless i think social interviews like this are important because it makes us realise that theres a problem in our societies & the education systems really needs to step up, to make these kind of opinions about the black race change. Also more and more people need to step in when they see racism taken place.
Disciple of Christ im black and im none of those. all black people do not live a hood lifestyle, but i guess that's the kind of black people you only focus your attention on and know of. That's quite ignorant
sopesangel Most stereotypes have some basis truths, however small it may be, statistically they're valid. Even if you don't agree with what I say, lemme ask you, would you still visit the inner cities of south Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. if you didn't have to? Deep down inside, you know those simply aren't good ideas.

The interviewed ppl are all so well spoken and thoughtful! I like that they didn’t try to blindly defend the racism in Korea but instead accept and explain why it might be more prevalent than in western countries and think of steps for progress. I feel that this interview was very well written and executed as it gave a chance for all of us to consider different perspectives about racism and how not one race is the wrongdoer or the victim. Hopefully people don’t get the wrong idea that Korea’s an unwelcoming country though; most of the racist ideas come from older generations that weren’t quite exposed to diversity. Nowadays racism in Korea’s getting much better while it still has a long way to go, just like in America. At the end of the day, not a single country’s perfect, but what matters is the progress and the mindset for growth!
I never saw them making excuses. I feel like half the comments just want to tell racist to make themselves feel better. You can tell they see their countries flaws.

It's natural to only trust and care about your own tribe and to be hostile towards everyone else. Thinking everyone is equal is insane.

Chinese people stopped bowing since cultural revolution and only do so now to pay respect to the dead. So if you bow to Chinese, you are essentially saying they are dead, and being superstitious, would be offended. Koreans and Japanese still bow as sign of respect or when they apologise.

I'll always respect her for being a good mother, even if she has hate in her heart.
Most people won't get direct racism in a foreign country that isn't diverse but you will still get looks from them either in a curious or hateful way.

You said it perfectly
How ironic.

And white people aren't white.

What a great comment! I agree - don't hate a whole race! Hate individual people when they're being assholes! Lol.

For all the people that think Media or image doesn’t matter... most of their negative perceptions come from TV. Not real life black ppl.
Complex Ez it goes on because we allow and endorse it. I've personally made up my mind that I won't anymore
Most people have no idea how deep propaganda is, which is why its disgusting to hear black people act like negative imagery isn't a big deal.
Truth N Justice you know what makes a person commit crimes is either income inequality / poverty. I think because of the American history the African-American guys face a lot of unemployment. Maybe now this problem is no more but racial discrimination does exist and i guess this makes them choose the easier way.
Truth N Justice what makes white people commit mass murder? It’s truly violent. Can you answer that?
This is why media is so important always displaying us in a negative way people take notice it’s not any of these people fault at all. It’s our media and it’s sad

We all feel superior to someone or some groups .

yup. racism isn't necessarily hateful and nobody would ever admit to being racist. it can come from good intentions, but it mostly comes from ignorance.
If it comes from good intentions then it's not racism. That word has been beaten so far out of its original meaning that no one even knows what it means anymore.
@Sainte Jeanne d'Arc
Why can't racism have good intentions? Everyone believes they're the hero of their own story. Even an antinatalist believes the human race should go extinct because they think their beliefs are righteous and just.
Racism doesn't have good intentions, it's malevolent. Look, racism now means what anyone w/ an agenda wants to tell you it means. All it is is a marxist manipulation tool to shut you up or make you dance and give whatever they demand.

Again great job, and thanks for the interview.
i hope you will be able to have only good experience in korea as much as you can.

I'm sorry that you had to face that, when I was in South Korea I had a lot of stares because I'm 6'4" and stood out like a sore thumb. But it must feel so much worse when people are actually afraid of you for no reason, I can't really imagine what that feels like. Also, when visiting Korea, it is much nicer if you travel with someone who lives there, the city is a social place, and there isn't much to do as a tourist.

im sick of hearing "the media this", "the media that ". that was acceptable 10/15 years ago but it's 2017 there are so many other mediums other than traditional media now. also the fact that they know that its the media portraying black people negatively yet still hold those stereotypes, annoys me.

PREACH!

Exactly
They were just making excuses tbh. Atleast, that’s just my opinion
@@DaddyZhong. true koreaboo nibbies cant accept the fact that they are racist and try to justify it by saying that everyone is judgemental and racist
I think they were making excuses lmao
I never saw them making excuses. I feel like half the comments just want to tell racist to make themselves feel better. You can tell they see their countries flaws.
