@@hajarmdn4883 actually there have been lots of problems with cousin marriages especially when there have been multiple generations of cousin marriages the same thing happens as what happened to the king.
you lose genetic diversity within the gene pool and recessive genes are more likely to come up as cousins share a set of grandparents

    • @calenlass1112
      @calenlass1112 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

@@hajarmdn4883 If you only marry 1st cousin to 1st cousin in many successive generations, though, you raise the likelihood that the gene pool will shrink and contain many duplicate recessive genes that otherwise would be phased out over time. The gene pool shrinks more quickly with niece-to-uncle or nephew-to-aunt marriage because of the statistical likelihood that the niece or nephew shares more genes with their parent's sibling, but simply turning to just 2nd cousins (or even 1st cousins one generation removed) the chance of compounding recessive genetic problems actually drops to that of any random woman and random man within a generation or so. The mathematics are involved, but rather straightforward, and you can work them out using dog or cat traits (spots vs no spots, normal tail vs bob tail) as examples with Punnett Squares. Genetic diversity is VERY IMPORTANT! :)

The odd thing about my home country is, it is perfectly legal to marry your cousin. I think I heard something along the lines of maybe the couple needs to have the approval of the family or something, but more distant relatives are a-okay to marry? Of course it still sounds weird to most people and they wouldn't consider their cousins that way, but the way I've heard some foreign people talking about family relations, that you can have exactly zero shared ancestry to be an acceptable partner, is a bit harsh to me. I mean, if I meet a person that I fall in love with, and it turns out we share a great-great-great-great-grandparent, I wouldn't really think it was something uncomfortable. If you're that distant relatives, you share basically no blood at all.
But yeah, I don't think my country is particularly incestuous, the cousin thing might be legal but it's still such a rare thing, it's just that we have been a very secluded country with a small population for a long period of history and have only in the last century started to open up, I guess? :D

Marrying your 1st cousin is perfectly legal in the US & UK, & not even that rare in the US, tho it's more common with ie Amish, fundamental Mormons etc. In the UK it's mostly South Asian families. Rather than outlawing it, governments try to educate people, but loads of kids are born with severe disabilities- a doctor in Pennsylvania specialises in treating a few diseases only found in Amish communities. So your country isn't unusual at all, imo!

    *cough* MOST OF EGYPTIAN ROYALTY
King Tut died at the young age of 19. For centuries people believed that King Tut died in battle but historians believe that his death was due to a poor immune system which was caused by inbreeding. Inbreeding was common in Egypt. Egyptians believed that they were God's and should marry other relatives to keep the blood line pure. King Tut had a curved spin, a cleft plate, clubed feet, dis formed hand and a high level of estrogen that caused him to have woman like breast.
Also up until the popularization of transportation a small colony of people who were mostly inbred lived in a remote mountains in Kentucky. Inbreeding somehow caused them to be born with blue skin. Of course modern medicine was able to turn their skin back to a normal color.

Ordinarily, a person will have 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, and 16 great-great grandparents, for a total of 28 separate individuals. Charles II of Spain, had a total of 9 separate individuals. And it's even worse than that. You have 64 great-great-great-great grandparents as separate individuals. Charles II had just 32. Back two more generations and from a possible 254 ancestors, he had just 82. Multi-generational inbreeding is a very bad idea.

Great video! Considering I watched a Dr. Phil episode yesterday about a pair of first cousins who legally married in one state and are fighting to make it legal across the country, this video is especially useful as to why that's such a bad idea. They complete discounted all of the potential health risks for their future offspring as being comparable to a woman over forty having a baby. Completely disregarding scientific facts. Also, I loved the Spanish-language voice overs from Clara.

They always had a translator ? They were proficient in all languages of the nations that were allies for diplomacy reasons ? What?!?!?! How did they communicate ?!??!?!?!

I am so tempted to ask for a joke-serious "royal history" video on the Targaryens (who, let's be real, would IRL be albino & suffer horribly anywhere with extensive sunlight).
BUT since April Fools has been and gone, I'd be keen to learn of any asian royals with disabilities. I know of queer asian royals (Ottoman, Chinese, etc) but cross-referencing British Imperialism against translated-to-english accounts make it difficult to match up TIMELINES (different calendars) let alone whereabouts cultural discrepancies fail to pick up on or outright censor/exaggerate events.
Pre-Colonial India, maybe? Does the UK teach much history on the Indian subcontinent?

Stephen Hawkings, would be interested innhearing what you woukd have to say. Tried Google seaching "famous disabled person historical" ✅ on famous, ✅ disabled, person is not really needed, historical... Oh my does Google even know what that means? Or do website pages don't know? I want to see someone born before the invention of the Camera! Anyone who "came up with" signing (Charles-Michel de l'Épée or others), Louis Braille. Off topic, your favourite Signs (I am sure "I love you Claudia" is a top one!) Memory loss (watched your vudeo on it last night) and learning, how does learning new things affect you? Semantic, episodic, declaraitive and procedural memory? (as I believe your vudeo covered a lot about implicit and explicit, but those aren't the only types of memories that reminded me if Highschool Psychology (brains are fascinating! Waiting for spelling update for brain to happen as I don't want to miss spell something here.)

Hi I love your video and I myself am absolutely fascinated by English history with all the monarchs am love the 5 major queens we pretty much are all familiar with and hear about Queen Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots (Not a fan of Mary Tudor aka Bloody Mary), Queen Victoria, Queen Anne and Queen Elizabeth II. On the topic of inbreeding could u possibly do a video on why they couldn't marry Lords, Dukes or Earls from other countries instead of basically only royal family members such as princes and princesses. I get why of course because of alliances, having armies to back them up, money and connections, but you would think that after 50 years of royal families interbreeding and inbreeding with one another and having so many children die or not survive infancy or so many children die young because of genetic problems then surely they would have thought hmm "maybe I shouldn't marry my daughter off to my uncle or her first cousin" hmm...….
Anyway I'm fascinated and absolutely love this stuff and no else in my family or circle of friends is the slightest bit interested and tbh doesn't really give a rats ass (boohoo), so I love your channel and please keep posting!!

I love this video I think of it often, actually. Here's why: I loved the phrase "the most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg." But also, in small bits there is a slight vibe of disability hierarchy and/or disparaging certain conditions. I found it jarring in this video, because I know you are aware of/have mentioned the hierarchy of disabilities in other videos, so I'm certain you never intended this vibe to be here. But that might be something to watch out for in how you frame things.
As always, I love your videos and they bring me calmness, joy, and geeky goodness. I'm so glad you're here. :)

I'm so happy you did a video on this family! I love looking into disabled historical figures as well since I'm a disabled person and a cultural anthropology major. Would you be interested in making a video about Vincent Van Gogh and his depression? I think a lot of people need to see the importance of mental illness and learn to separate this idea that depression fuels creativity, or that one must be sad to create art. I've heard many people say that his talent came from sorrow and I hate this idea that people with mental illness need to be mentally ill to be creative. Horrible stigma.
