I worked in Future Zone/Electronics Boutique in the early-mid '90s, and they had the exclusive rights to sell Pele. Had boxes of the bloody things in the back room as no one wanted to buy them, and managment wouldn't sell them for less than £25.
Did I mention Future Zone/Electronics Boutique were run by idiots?

You beat me to it Mr Bundy, I was there in the thick of it back in the day and managed two Future Zone Stores (Midlands) do you remember when they actually imported a shit load of the US version of Super Street Fighter II (SNES) along with a NTSC/PAL convertor all for a mere £75.

I loved European Club Soccer when I was a kid! I played it to death. But the only real reason I played it was because you could play as my local team, IFK Gothenburg, and that was the first time I had played a football game where they (and other Swedish teams) were featured. It blew my fragile little mind 😂

Sensible Soccer. A couple of mates had it for the Amiga from the start and we were all obsessed with it. Recall being well impressed the V1.1 had the passback rule as introduced for the 92/93 season. I had to wait until Christmas 1993 to finally get it for the Mega Drive. That was when the original FIFA came out, and that got all the attention as it looked absolutely mind blowing. With only international teams and no edit option I couldn't get into it. As a fan of RPGs and football management, I wanted depth.
Sensible Soccer's edit option, ability to save games, edit team kits, make up your own leagues and cups was brilliant - so simple to include in the game but so effective as well. The pitches would change through the season depending on which month you started, another nice touch. It was really tedious entering player names using the control pad instead of a keyboard though. I was gutted all the player names were wrong, guess. for licence reasons.
The Mega CD version could have done so much more but at least it has decent crowd noise. Just watched a demo of it though, and it runs too fast. British spec 50hz is the best for Sensible Soccer!
I loaned the game out once, and I had set it up with all the Scottish teams; working out which is a good match takes a lot of trial and error. And the little git wiped the memory. Still annoys me nearly 30 years later 🤣
I have the original game I got in 93, plus a second one I bought to replace the box and instructions on the first as they went missing, and the International update which I picked up off eBay a few years ago (is that version quite rare?).
Sports games often don't age too well, but Mega Drive Sensible Soccer does, even if it isn't as good as the Amiga version.

@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten I loved footy games on the Amiga! Sensible was probably the best of its time on any platform. I also enjoyed ones like Fighting Soccer. I think maybe it's rose tinted specs though with titles like that... haha.

  • @JackCalico

Sensible Soccer is probably my all-time favourite megadrive game. The endless customisation of teams, kits, leagues and tournaments meant you could essentially update the game yourself and play it for years without getting bored. The gameplay was also much more fluid and adaptable than other football games which could often feel quite frustrating. Even in the early Fifas, which were a cut above almost all other football games at the time, it would be quite difficult to score anything other than shots from outside the area.

I was the manager of a Future Zone store (remember them) back when Pele was released in fact it was a "Future Zone" exclusive. We had it playing on the multi screens but where told to remove the controllers from the "Play Zone" to stop people from actually playing it.
It was on the shelves before it could be reviewed so we had a couple of weeks to "push it hard" upon the unsuspecting football loving public (Fifa this was not) there where many complaints.
From what I can remember it originaly retailed for £44.99 but quickly ended being reduced finally down to a mere £12.99 after a few months.

International Superstar Soccer Deluxe was hands down the best football game I played back in the day. I've played quite a few of them (World Cup Italia 90', some FIFA games, Pele, AWS Pro Moves Soccer) but none of them captivated me as much as ISS Deluxe did. It had a legit career mode, lots of individual challenges, and customizable weather conditions which actually affected your playstyle. To this day (to me) it stands as one of those games I normally wouldn't bother playing since I don't like the genre in general, but it was more than good enough for me to make an exception.

13:01 My Mega Drive collection was 6 games, 3 of which were FIFA 95, 96 and 97. I seem to remember 96 had a glitch (not that I'd know to call it that at the time) where if you did a slide tackle and knocked the ball loose, that same player couldn't then collect the ball. You had to switch to another player to then pick it up before the player you tackled recovered and won it back. Could have been 97, but I seem to remember being relieved when I discovered they fixed it in the 97 version

I loved Super Kick Off. Yes the controls were limited and it was actually too easy to score but what I really liked was that you could modify the teams. They had names that were very similar to the real ones so for example Manchester had a goalkeeper called S. Michael and a defender called D. Erwin. I used to change Liverpool to Chelsea for the 1993/94 season. Hours of fun.

Fantastic video. I seem to remember UK magazines at the time highlighting the fact that it seemed virtually impossible for anybody to release a quality footy sim for the Mega Drive, things only changed after FIFA. Owned both the first FIFA game and Fever Pitch but actually preferred the latter of the two. Still, nothing could beat Sensible Soccer on the Amiga.

Ah I loved the Premier Manager games on the Mega Drive. Between them and then LMA Manager games nothing has really scratched that itch since.

I'd love to see you do the same with the Sega Saturn! I was never a football/soccer fan, but I play a LOT of the original Worldwide Soccer on Saturn. I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether it's actually good or not.

Me and my brother had a Japanese import copy of Tecmo World cup on our megadrive when we were kids. Our dad bought it for us when we saw it in a shop along with Ringside Angel. We got them home and realised the Japanese carts wouldn't fit in our PAL machine, so our Dad took the top case off and filed down the cart slot 😂 fond memories

5-0 to Kuwait against England. That's how you know you're playing a video game. (If the 16-bit graphics weren't enough*.)
*Tbf, modern editions of FIFA look so realistic that I and many other people I know have mistaken them for real life at times -- at least for a few seconds.

Fantastic video. It's actually great that you're going through all of the games from some genre. It helps to appreciate some titles even more :) (especially if you compare them to crap one titles xD). I like that you referring pretty often to: "if feels / it doesn't feel like football". Of course it's subjective but yea, at that point of time, it was very hard to create such title. I mean - calling something football just because you managed to code a ball and 22 players is not enough ;)
I actually liked Kick Off 2 but I played on Amiga ;) I was somewhere around 12 years old, and many times after school we played together kick off II with my school friend who had Amiga (I was still on C64 xD). On Amiga it was also crazy title - it felt a little bit like football, but it was more about learning weird kick off mechanics, rather than real football world ;) It was more like a pinball ;) But yea, Kick Off from Amiga was waaay better than Mega Drive version. Also, it was 1992 - 1993. In 1995 - 1996 it was all conquered by Sensible (World of) Soccer ;)

I wonder if you'd do a similar video for soccer games on the SNES to compliment this one. That'd be awesome.

Back in the 16 bit days music played more of a part with the on pitch action as it wasn't easy replicating a full on crowd with all the bells and whistles plus no ongoing commentary

Great video, loved sensible soccer.... also loved dini Dino goal! Pretty sure that was the amiga though , the version on the mega drive was unplayable , but I think using the joystick on the amiga helped with the likes of sensible and goal! Once again kim , love all the videos... keep up the good work kid.
