So, technically not region-locked but you need to "fix" the cart casing
Or you could just get a cartridge tray or 3D print one that has no tabs in it and swap out the one that's in the console
They are just physically region locked
@@benthecat4345 And this is why I do emulators.... none of this nonsense at all.
@@CD-vb9fifr
@@CD-vb9fi
I do emulators for older games that are a few console generations or older, but that doesn't stop me from getting the actual game and playing them on their native console
There's an easy mod you can do to a North American console! You can open it up and cut the two tabs that fit in those "slots" off to make your console region-free. It doesn't affect the performance of any north American games either so it's a great mod to do on any n64
Yessir using a plastic lid I melted it onto the special nintendo screws to loosen them as a kid cuz we didn't have a nintendo screw driver
PAL users crying in the corner:
@@Nintendo_Homebrew just use a flashcart that I bought when I want to play ntsc games😮
@@Nintendo_Homebrew Nothing new there.... (Aussie N64 owner btw)
I think you could also use a Gameshark cart too

My God... Back in the day, I just bought an adapter for like 10 dollars...
you could also cut the plastic tabs inside the cartridge slit or remove the plastic piece they're connected to entirely. iirc both amera and Japan use the same electrical standard (unlike europe) so the games work the same
@@dooplon5083they don't use the same electrical standard, but they're very close. That has nothing to do with this though, as the video standard (NTSC) is what matters here. Both US and Japan use the same video standard where as Europe uses PAL.
@@NottJoeyOfficial Actually I was under the impression the impression that it *does* have to do with it since the video standards were affected by the electrical differences as well, causing pal to be slower by 5 frames (though not all differences relate to the electrical standards I'll admit, since many of them have to do with unrelated things like scanline count)
@@dooplon5083 that makes sense, analog video signals are impacted by the electricity I suppose. I was more thinking about how every N64 console in the world runs on the same voltage and frequency due to the power adapter. As long as you use an N64 power adapter from your region, it should work on any region N64, which is why I said the video specifically was the problem. It doesn't matter what your power grid runs on as long as the power inside the console itself matches. That's why I can run something like a Famicom or Japanese PSP in the US, because despite there being a 20 volt power difference as long as the power going to the console is correct then it doesn't matter. I just use US power adapters on Japanese systems because of this.
@@NottJoeyOfficial I mean to be fair the psp is also a handheld with its own battery so grid differences would also be irrelevant for that alone lol, but yeah pal games on n64 are noticably slower, possibly due to pal's power grid differences (but only if the adapter doesn't fix that, it's not hooked up to the tv showing the gameplay after all, just the n64) and framerate standards, so they still separate them by region for many titles in speedrun leaderboards. However I should note that despite this inherent difference you can program around this inferior speed to get the game running comparably fast, and some games such as goldeneye did this; i assume that it's using the technique that d64 used where the game adjusts movement values and game logic on the fly based on how long it took each frame to come out, which is why donkey kong 64 plays smoothly despite having a bit of lag from time to time (it's speeding up your character to move to where you expect them to be despite the laggy frames making normal movement impossible)
You can actually remove a bracket on the n64 board and it will play both Japanese and North America games
Exactly what I was thinking much easier
Mario Party Smash 64?? WHAT?!
What happened to the first 63???
The first 63 never got past the demos
u can just swap the back of the shell instead of transferring the entire board. and u can also get a region free slot replacement for the n64
Agreed, wondering why he swapped the actual gameboard when all you need to do is pop off the backs and swap them and it does the same thing.
I did that very thing, Japanese carts are cheaper than the NA versions
I wish I could afford a Japanese and American cartridge but I am poor.
Exactly what I did with mine works flawlessly

I wish I could afford a Japanese and American cartridge but I am poor.
You could´ve just swapped the back half of the cartridge shell, that way you still have the correct Japanese front and it will fit the console.
Nintendo is quaking in fear from your power, Nico…
😂😂
I'm so glad the age of region-locked consoles is finally gone.
"So now i can play my favourite Japan exclusive game."
(Plays Super Smash Bros. 64)
He should have ised an actual Japanese exclusive like Pocket Monsters Stadium, Animal Crossing 64, or Custom Robo and its sequel.
Sin & Punishment!
Another fun fact this mod and the cartridge tray mod will also work on all the subsets (ie Asian, Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan), the advantage is that most of these are in English.
“*FBI knocks on the door”
Why did they use other components in the first place? What would have been wrong about making Japanese games playable on a European or American N64 for example?
idk why they did this. however, the european n64 is not compatible with the american/japanese games, and the european games are not compatible with the american/japanese n64
I’m not really sure but this was common practice for basically every game company at the time. You couldn’t play your American PlayStation games on a Japanese one for example. They would put different ridges on them so they wouldn’t work on other systems.
I do wonder what the reason for this was? It seems like a waste of money
I've read somewhere that it stemmed from framerates, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.
@@Thoomas2001 yes ive heard that too. from what i remember:
the japanese and american n64s are on 60hz, while the european one is on 50hz. booting the game on the wrong refresh rate will cause the screen to constantly warp up and down
@@HoodedOlive i believe it's because regional price, people bought games in japan for dirt cheap and then sell in US or europe

Or just swap the backs of both shells lmao
@RomoBomo
Then you would have to do that every single time you want to switch games, swapping out the cartridge tray in the console for one that has no tabs is something you would only have to do once and you'd be able to play every N64 game without any further modifications

It's such a joy to see Nico on a Tuesday!

yeah, and a lot of people actually do this.
@@WohaoG it's much easier.
I thought it would show a screen saying you can't play it because it's in the wrong region
That only happens when you try to play a Japanese or American game in a European or Australian console, or vice versa.
There are a few options for playing Japanese cartridges on a North American N64 where you can avoid having to swap the tabs on your cartridges every time.
The first option is to buy a cartridge adapter, which is what I use. The one I have is literally just a blank North American cartridge with a connector on top, which allows for Japanese cartridges to be inserted, and all it does is it acts as a passthrough between the console and the cartridge. This "passthrough" method can also be used if you have a GameShark cheat cartridge, assuming yours works, as N64 GameSharks are notorious for being finicky and getting bricked very easily.
Another option is to replace the slot tray inside your N64 console with a region-free slot tray that has no tabs on it, as that's what prevents Japanese cartridges from fitting inside the North American N64 consoles and vice-versa. You can buy a region-free slot tray for dirt cheap on Amazon, eBay, or Etsy, and they're available in different colors to match the console you have.
A third option is to cut the tabs off on your N64's slot tray, using a rotary tool, but doing this will make your slot tray look like crap afterwards, so I would suggest going with the region-free slot tray instead if you wanna play your N64 console without the tabs. If you don't care how your slot tray looks, then have at it.
A fourth option is to play your N64 console without a slot tray, but I wouldn't recommend this, as you could be exposing the inside of your N64 to dust, dirt and grime.
The final option is to buy a third-party replacement cartridge shell with the North American tabs on the back and screw in the back half to your Japanese cartridge. The front and back should line up, assuming the back half is the correct size. Again, these cartridge shells can be found for dirt cheap on Amazon, eBay and Etsy. But doing this means your Japanese cartridges aren't gonna be 100% original.
If you're a purist like myself, and you don't want to modify your N64 console or cartridges in any way, or you don't feel like taking them apart, I'd recommend just buying a cartridge adapter.
There are tray adapters available so you could play both.
Gotta love the energy Nico keep it up! 🎉
I wish I could afford a Japanese and American cartridge but I am poor.
“But remember, Safety first”. Love the line so much. 😅😂
Turn it into a logo package and boom!!!!

That slaps pretty dang hard
Lol Nintendo was so serious about being unserious.
That is worse than swapping disks in the boxes
Funny at Nintendo didn't think of that
I used to just permanently remove that outer case
This perfect loop doesn't exis-
Good old days back when there was a huge motherboard in your cartridge.
Nintendo back then: "We should region-lock consoles so that there are others who can buy the wrong games and forced to buy the right games."
Nintendo right now: "We should draw our consoles so it matches some of the top-selling games, and confuse the buyers that it has the game on it when in reality, the game is not included!"
You just got to love Nintendont's greed at this point.
I never thought I'd see Nicobbq again. Nice to have you back, bud

This is true for Super Nintendo/Super Famicom as well! But we were not as sophisticated as you, we just chopped off bits of the Super Famicom cartridges to cram them directly into the Super Nintendo. LOL
Dude said safety first, and put safety glasses on just to use a screwdriver. ☠️🤣
“Remember safety first” looks like something a serial killer would say…

You can actually buy a modified plastic holder to replace the original one in the console.
Taking regional exclusives to the next level.
Region Locked ❌
Plastic Locked ✅
It's so weird that they used to region lock games like this
Just swap the back, no need to swap the insides.
Back in the day we used to use N64 gameshark to fix this problem.
you can just change the back part of the cartridge instead of everything inside and it will work btw
Right? It was irritating to watch
That's so freaking insane
my older brother used to heat up a knife and burn the plastic that doesn't let you play games from different regions
Or you could either cut out the tabs inside the console or use some kind bypass like a GameShark
Literally made this waaaay harder than it needed to be. All you need is to do is switch the back part of the cart with an American one and that's it
The best way to solve this is there is a plastic bracket in the Nintendo 64 itself, there is a region free bracket that you can 3D print or have mailed to you and best of all you don't have to modify any cartridges and it's really easy to do the swap.
its much easier and less confusing to open up the n64 and cut up the cartridge slot a little bit, im sure you could find a tutorial here somewhere, it removes the region “lock” without the need for cartridge swapping, you could also use a 3d printed piece to replace the part in the console if you dont want to carve up your n64
Alternatively, you can cut the tabs out of the cartridge tray on the inside of the console or just 3d print a tray without the tabs. That way, the console can now play all North American and Japanese games
If you can fit it in, the game would run like normal.
He sounds like he's doing an impression of Mario.
How to play Japanese games on a N64 console
Also the cartridge: *mario* *party*
My brother bought a Japanese game and what he did was carve a couple notches to make it fit. I think it was slightly crooked and the notches he carved looked a little janky but it worked!
I like how you made the ending a perfect loop with the beginning.
You could’ve just switched the backs only lmao
You can modify the console itself in about 5 minutes and not bother with this cart swapping nonsense.
All you need to do is just change the back of the cartridge, as it's the only part that interacts with the tabs in the console, or if you don't want to do that, you can get inside the console and remove the tabs from the inside, making your console region-free. No need to swap the entire cartridge shell at all.
I feel like the Walter white stick in a car meme. just screaming at my phone to OP not to start taking apart the cartridges. there's just two little tabs inside the n64, file or cut them down and the console is region free, instead of needing to swap the guts of every Japanese cartridge you want to play and back to have a working NTSC game again
You can also take apart the N64 to remove the original lockout baseplate and replace it with a region-free one!
But what happens if you put a PAL N64 cartridge inside a Japanese N64 or vice-versa?
You don't even need to swap everything out into a different shell, just swap the back.
What we did as kids we used a soldering iron to melt a notch and it worked well too!
There’s a replacement drop-in cartridge slot that you can add to make your n64 region free.
Here’s an idea. Just either one : buy a region free slot to go inside for both to work. Two: make one yourself via 3d print if possible. Three: cut the inside American cart insert to remove obstruction preventing cart from sitting inside evenly to play on N64
You can mod the inside of the console to remove the tabs, you can mod each cart so that it fits in the US console, or buy a pass through device that allows it.
Now put a N64 game into a SNES
You can also change the system and add an adapter to play both!
This is actually really interesting, I never knew this. Kudos for the interesting trivia.
Or you can just swap the back of the shell instead of the entire shell… that way the front is still the game you’re currently playing, you can use a game that cost you a dollar that you don’t care about, like a sports game… or you can swap out the piece on the n64 where the game sits so there are no groves region locking it… regardless swapping entire game shell feels a bit much… O.o
So... a big, dark-haired, nerdy guy telling me how we can still play old games.
...I'm getting flashbacks.
You can buy a universal Cartridge Slot tray on ebay for $4 US.
Bro, you don't have to do all that. You can literally buy a region free cart holder for $10. All you have to do is open the system up and swap it. Very simple. Do not do this cart swapping with different games , takes too much time.
A basic and very common mod is to make cuts in the cart slot so it supports any cartridge
I used to import Japanese N64 games on my US console, I just sawed the corners off to play them.
Shame you can't do the same with PAL machines >.>
I once got my US copy of Super Mario RPG into my Super Famicom by disassembling the cart and putting just the board in the cart slot!
It'll say "is it in yet?"
Or.... hear me out on this one. You mod the N64's cartridge slot by cutting out the tabs or buy a 3D printed slot part. So that way you can play all the games without doing the whole PCB switch
Or you can just open up the console file down the plastic nubbys in the cartridge slot and then you can play both without having to tear the cartridges apart every time! 🤷♂️
Best short I've seen to date
Dude, you could just swap the backplates...
"Togetter" 😂😂😂
Just get yourself an adapter to save yourself time.
Or, ya know, just take the plastic tabs out of the n64 itself so you don't have to mess about with the cartridges (where you are FAR more likely to damage something). It's like 20 bucks to get a region free replacement plastic housing, and you can keep the original for if you think you might sell the system at a later date.
Bro played smash bros on mario party 💀
You can play Japanese N64 game cartridge on American consoles. You need to remove the part with a screw in the N64 console which prevents the Japanese to fit in.
Fellow cassette case display collector 🤝
That’s what I did back then but without the cartridge 😂
Phew, you nearly upset Nathaniel Bandy when you brought out the knife and hammer.
you can also remove the pieces inside the cartridge slot
permanently removing region lock in that console
When I was a kid we just sacrificed the N64 took it apart, exacto bladed the notches put it back together never had to change a cart again.
I remember people just breaking the tabs blocking the cart, TADAH! Region free
