  • The first visit to Twyford in September '87 represents one of my earliest attempts at videography, so apologies for the quality. However, it still gives an insight to what a Saturday afternoon on the West of England mainline looked like in 1987. Unfortunately, my records don't show the numbers for lots of the movements, but I can be fairly certain that the Class 50s were 022 Anson, 029 Renown, 030 Repulse and 034 Furious.
The second visit, on a Saturday afternoon (25th June 1988) still includes 4 freight trains in the space of a little over 2 hours. Also Class 50s seen were:
    007 Sir Edward Elgar
    008 Thunderer
    009 Conqueror
    016 Barham
    041 Bulwark and
    044 Exeter
The third visit on the 9th July, from about 1:45pm to 4:30. During that time we were able to see 5 different Class 50s, 4 Class 47s and even a Class 56 on freight. As per usual, I didn't tend to film the HST or DMU activity, but this section does include a couple of shots.
[Note: this content has been posted to the channel previously but has been re-edited and converted from 4:3 aspect to 16:9].

Long before the overhead wires arrived!

Thanks, you’re welcome. I haven’t actually been back to Twyford since the 1980s, so haven’t seen ‘the wires’ in situ. I guess I’m not missing much 😆😆

Lovely stuff! You were lucky to capture several freights running on the main lines. That was pretty rare east of Twyford.

Thanks for watching. Strange how the passage of time puts things in perspective, isn’t it. 👍😊

Oh, yes, I wouldn’t normally bother with DMUs, sticking to loco hauled, but that was one of my first filming expeditions, and so I think I videoed everything that day - luckily 😊👍.
