I tried both patterns, the big companies and indies. There're 3 things convincing me to prefer the indies. 1. For me it looks like they put more thoughts in the pattern. 2. The sizing 3. The very well explanations. And additional I like the idea to support a small business.

Love your videos Lauren, so helpful and practical, I have just discovered the absolute joy of sewing in middle age after I bought a used boat and needed to make new seat cushions. Now I am making clothes and I just can't stop!

I always learn one or two little tidbits from these beginning classes. Fun to look at things from a beginners perspective as well!

Thank you for doing these videos... they are wonderful. I would love to see a tutorial on sleeves and armholes. That is very hard for me to adjust.

Have you ever used a Jalie pattern? That is what I picked for my first indie pattern. They have 1/4 - 1/5 of the instructions of a 'Big 4 pattern', and they are printed right on the 38" x 50" pattern sheet.
I trace both types of patterns, so it all ends ups on tissue paper.

I love sewoverit patterns.A lot of people seem to complain that the arms are too tight. How would I check that and then alter it .would I have to alter the armhole . Really helpful vlog

Would you be able to make a list of those independent sewing pattern companies (that you know of) it will be greatly appreciated. Love your videos.

Hi Lauren-- off topic but I love your channel and part of it is how you film. It is so well done. What type of camera do you use to film? I also have a YT channel (on ballet) but I am avid sewer as well! love all your fabric recommendations and tips! I just use my iPhone and could not find a good dsl camera for video :(

I use my iPhone as well. I've got an XS and I use the front camera. For ages I used the selfie camera so I could see the screen at the same time and check I was in frame but then i realised that it's not as good a lens and the quality is much better the other way around, so not I just try to stay in the same spot roughly when i film and check the frame before I start or I use mirrors so I can see the screen as I film - a bit fiddly on your own though!

Thank you for such an informative video. Could I ask what the pattern is for the top you are wearing? It looks nice and simple and as a beginner I would like to give it a go. Is the fabric available to purchase?

Thanks Elaine. Its the Merchant and mills Camber top and I made it a while back so the fabric has now sold out unfortunately, sorry about that. guthrie-ghani.co.uk/shop/pattern/merchant-mills-camber-set-sewing-pattern

We sell some dots and cross pattern paper in the shop that is pretty good. Lasts a long time and can be reused again and again :) guthrie-ghani.co.uk/shop/pattern-paper-per-half-meter
