    Definitely agree on the pajama pants. When I was in school, at about 12 years old I think, my class took Home Economics (which taught you things like cooking & managing finances, etc) and one of the sections covered learning how to sew. We all, boys and girls, learned how a sewing machine worked, picked out fabric, and then all made really cozy flannel pajama pants. Years later, when I got a sewing machine as a gift, I could think back on that experience and feel a bit more confident about what I was doing.

      Thanks for this Ruby. Really appreciate it. Memories like that make you love sewing. Sadly most teens and beginners I talk to have horrid stories of sewing at school and it's put them off. I'm on a mission to make sewing fun again! :D

      One of the best recommendations I have is for people who have never sewn before is to go to Simplicity's JIFFY PATTERNS.....Simplicity has come back out with these Jiffy Patterns and they are really easy for the beginner.
      When I began sewing however, my MIL taught me how to sew over the phone actually ( we lived in a different state when my DH was going to college ) . She recommended that I chose a pattern with 2-3 pcs...and also use cheap fabric ( muslin too ) and when I became more comfortable with a pattern, go on to another pattern, ( make sure to add a piece or two ) and keep going. It's been 40 plus years and I can honestly say I am an excellent seamstress.....I have made wedding gowns, prom dresses etc......
      You videos are really good......I think more people need videos like this !
      Thanks so much for doing what you do ! :)

    I appreciate how you mentioned to start out with sewing pajamas. Great idea. The way that you described that you learned dress making, then were away from it for awhile, then returned to dress making shows that we can all be beginners, again and again.

      Thank you. And yes, it doesn't matter if you've dabble here and there or think you've forgotten. We all have to start somewhere. Also sometimes I feel like a beginner with a difficult pattern- it's about powering through and slowly working things out. :) x

    First off I think your lovely and love the pineapple blouse you have on.Thank you for the wonderful videos I'am in my 50's and could only sew pillows curtains and aprons and things but never wanted to sew clothing because I always thought it was very hard to read the patterens.I have a 1963 chevy nova car all original and I want to make a few pieces of clothing to wear when Iam in my car.I thought that would be cool. The way you explained everything no wonder you teach sewing classes your a doll and very good at explaining things I wish you were my neighbor thank you and God Bless 🙏💜

    I agree with using cheap AF fabric for first-try on new patterns. I find it actually takes 3-4 times to really perfect a new pattern/project. You can use the first few times ("prototypes") to (1) learn what mistakes to avoid (2) learn ways to do things simpler and (3) add your own personal touches. :)

    Thank you for this video! And I love your pineapple blouse too! I was also forced to sew in home economics in the late 70's early 80's. It wasn't a traumatic experience but I didn't continue with any sewing until just now almost 40 years later! I bought a sewing machine about 2 months ago and am trying hand at some curtains and easy things like placemats and coasters. After just a short bit I feel so compelled to try to make some clothing for myself! I just hope I have the patience to keep on with it. I think I'm learning that sewing is a lot like painting (and many other things) it is all in the prep work! And if I allow enough time for that and don't get to the point of 'too tired' I'll do OK! I look forward to the day to wear my own creations!

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love this, good for you Lisa. Yes I always try and cut everything out in one session, then sew it in another. So if you have a few garments to make. Cut them all out in a couple sessions. Then when you next have time you can just dive right into the sewing bits. :) x

    I just made pajama pants with my mom (who has sewn for 60 years) and she led me step by step and I learned sew much! Haha get it?! But seriously they’re easy but challenging enough without being too hard. They’re also super comfortable and they’re something you WANT to wear. Previously I made a really difficult blouse and a dress and can now see why I struggled so much.

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aww how nice though that you made something useful and you made it well. It's easy to dive straight in to 'big projects' before you're ready and then have your confidence knocked. I'm sure now you feel ready and prepared for your next challenge! Happy Sewing! x

    Some stretch fabrics do fray I using a lot of stretch knits in the future as I am making a Latin American mens dance shirt as a trail piece for my dream job with the company who makes the costumes for strictly come dancing and dancing on Ice and all the tours. Plus stage and screen and competition dance wear for children and adults. Giovanni and Rose inspired me to try and I'm doing well. And I've made a wonderful new friend who happens to be one of the managing directors of the company DSI LONDON.. I'm disabled from birth and it really doesn't matter what level your sewing experience is just try. I'm also a qualified couture fashion designer and pattern cutter. But I love simple beginners patterns as once you've got the hang of them you can learn to alter them to make whatever you want your only barrier is your imagination. Thanks for the brilliant video

    Like you Jessalli
    , I have been sewing my entire life and there is much I take for granted, but I like the question on what to recommend to the newbie. A wrap skirt or just an elasticized waist skirt made with a stable knit, like Ponte, Liverpool, or bullet can make such a cute outfit.i threw one together from a random pattern I had , a slight A line just above the knee, and found myself wearing it more than my shorts this last summer.i felt a little more stylish going to the grocery store as well. Talk about dress it.up or down. Also instead of,making knit dresses, I almost always make a skirt with a top made of the bodice extended. That way I have a dress and a top. I make a tie belt or store bought, it depends. I also find it to be more flattering figure wise. Tips for sewing with knits: pull back your threads and set your needle down every time. Just make it a habit. If your machine still wants to eat your shirt you are making, slip some tissue paper under the fabric before you set down the presser foot. Oh and ever so gently adjust the presser foot pressures. Look in your machines manual to find out how. You should see a major improvement. Enjoy your projects and makes!

    What a lovely idea for a video: Well done!
    The rest of my comment is my own silly “rant,” feel free to ignore it.
    In my opinion, the multi-multi-size “unisex” patterns printed on ultra-thin paper are so annoying.
    First, I have a terrible time throwing away extra, unused pattern pieces, so they clog up the drawers and boxes in my sewing area - but that’s all my own fault as a “sewing hoarder.”
    Second, unless you wear an A to small B bust cup, “unisex” tops don’t fit at all. Nowadays, I have learnt multiple ways of making a full-bust adjustment, so it doesn’t matter, but for a beginner it would be a nightmare. Better to stick with simple skirts, pyjama bottoms or shorts at first.
    Third, the multi-multi-size patterns are printed on such thin paper that they are a misery to work with. If I find I like a pattern, I have to tape the now-shredded bits onto thicker paper to ever use it again.
    I remember being able to buy patterns with 3 dress sizes printed on them. I could buy a dress pattern with sizes 12-14-16 printed on it, and the paper was thicker. Those were great. Any sewist whose top and bottom are two full sizes apart might agree. (16 on top, 12 on the bottom.....if it fit my top, it was the size of a tent below, lol.)

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thanks Tina, I know what you mean about keeping the scrap paper. Never had a problem with bust size but I'm not gifted in that area haha.

I’m currently 13 weeks pregnant and so would love to make some maternity clothes for myself but a lot of the patterns I’ve seen look quite complicated for a beginner. I’ve bought the maternity package from Tilly and the buttons which was really easy to follow and I’m going to make a range of them in colours/patterns but I wondered if you could give me any advice on where else to look for maternity patterns for beginners. Thank you for all of your videos they really inspire me!

    Hi, I love your channel. I just found it and I'm excited to try one of your sew alongs. I wanted to ask a question about patterns as I don't have much exsperience with them. Have you found the sizing ok on McCalls patterns? I made a garment recently and it was the biggest size and it was absolutely tiny. But it said the pattern did size 8 - 14. I couldn't work out if it was meant to be UK or US sizing (it didn't say). If you have any exsperience in this I would be very grateful. (or anyone else reading the comments) Thanks!

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rebecca, Sizing on every pattern is different. The best thing you can do is look at the measurements for each size and circle the one that fits best to you - bust, waist, hip etc. If your sizes go over two sizes you can either mix the two or go for the larger option. I have done a video on how to measure yourself - I think this might help you. :)

      Also worth noting, the pattern sizes don’t correlate to the sizes of ready made store bought clothes. I find I need a much larger size in patterns.

    Sooooo... imagine you sewed when you were younger and you return to it as a mature adult. You cut out your fabric and it’s slippery and see through so you try to put in a lining! Seemed simple. However after I laid out the pattern pieces I put the bodice together incorrectly. It’s impossible for me to explain here what I did, but I MIGHT be able to rescue it. Word of advice. Even if you think you know how to sew don’t bite off more than you can chew LOL. I was making a simplicity pattern number K9010. Looks pretty straight forward. Adding the lining is what got me all twisted.
