Unfortunately Hording things usually is a symptom of a underlying mental issue. My mom knew this lady Ms Amerati and she was the same way. Me and my father were hired to do a massive clean up of her horder house a few years back. It was exactly how you just described. Multiple refrigerators stuffed with rotting food. Clutter piled to the ceiling in everyroom with a little trail going from the front door to the her bed, . It took us 2 weeks and liksms 14 - 20yard dumpsters to empty out. We left the house immaculate, clean and sorted. We went back a month later to do a welfare check and we were shocked to see the litter she manged to amass after we left it spotless just a month ago. I probably would have forgotten all abou this too if it wasnt for me almost falling through the ceiling.

But when you've lived through a regime where you couldn't own private property and were frequently starving, it's probably a symptom of the trauma experienced. I'm not a psychologist though. I am Cambodian, and my Grandfather fought in the Cambodian Civil War against the Khmer Rouge, but in 1975, he changed his name to avoid execution. The rest of my family had to work in Battambang, and some of my family members were murdered along with 2 million people. My Grandpa died in 2021. He was born in 1935. Rest in Peace.
My dad was also born in 1979, 2 months after the Vietnamese Liberation. Of course, he lived in a poor family, and they were malnourished. He only had 1 outfit, just a white t-shirt and shorts, with no shoes. My mum on the other hand, was born in 1980 or 1981, and she was born into a family who was poor at some point, but had enough money to go to school, because they lived in Phnom Penh. Now, here I am. If one of my family members who made my parents died, I wouldn’t be here today.

I toured S21 and the Killing Fields years ago. The individual cells, no bigger than small offices, where several prisoners were housed were divided into brick subsections just a little bigger than coffins. The "rules" posted in the interrogation rooms were chilling.
Cambodia happened to be one of the countries the North Vietnamese were using to funnel the means of war into South Vietnam. I'm not saying that the US isn't at fault. I am saying that had the NVA not used Cambodia or Laos as the means to funnel troops, weapons and supplies into SV, the US would not have even considered sending troops into said countries. Technically, it is North Vietnam's fault as they dragged Cambodia, unwillingly, into the conflict by being an unwilling accomplice in its logistics.
They also hold zero resentment to the USA for the Vietnam war. You can visit Vietnam as an American and people will be happy to see you. My grandma was apart of this and was in these camps and she only escaped through her grandpa scoping out the area and successfully sneaking her out of these camps but her real father and mother didnt make it this was mainly because most of the raising of children were handled by the grandparents while the parents worked in the capital.

I knew an older gentleman who had lived under communism before escaping to America. Had lots of stories, mostly involving digging ditches and seeing people executed.
