  • Today we check on hydraulic filters and fuel filters, move some hoses around, and try to find where our engine barring tool goes.
    We also get a brand new head in and discuss future plans on how I want to proceed with repairs.

    Oh! That looks exactly like the same vintage as my old 74A. I have a few videos of it on here.

    OK old mate do yourself a big favor hire a industry type heavy duty STEAM CLEANER for a weekend .Tow the old girl back out of the way , lay some old conveyor under her and go for it or even cheap tarp . High water pressure cleaner is okay but nowhere as good as a kero burning steam cleaner . i now through experience of having used both types of machines . Try some paint stripper on that water trap you tryied to clean looks liked it has over spray on it. After giving her a good cleaning drop off the sump for a look see may be for piece of mind as to the condition of the bottom end and pistons and so forth Having the tractor clean will make for a far more pleasant job ,and greater pride. That knob with needle on filter cap is to bleed air from system while cranking engine. That’s one advantage of pony start, you can crank and crank to bleed fuel system. If in the future you have a problem bleeding, I have already pressurized fuel tank to help bleed system.

      Thanks for the tip. That knob looks just like the priming pump knob on the generator I have been working on.

    Regarding the in-frame, it might be worth checking how the piston/rings hold a spirit of some kind in the space above them, If the sprit runs straight down the bores into the sump you will know all is not 100% with them. One piston appeared to show some historic debris damage to the top. Given your investment with the head I would be inclined to at least do the liner seals and piston rings. If it needs liners, pistons and bearings you'll be glad you checked it. You might also increase its value and it would be great to accompany you on the journey. Good luck with her.

      Great idea on the spirits in the holes to see what shape the rings are in. I will try it in the next day or 2 and report back (probably in the next video). I appreciate the insight.

      @@DMIDoes Check for a ridge just below the top of the liners too while your doing the spirit test.

      @DMIDoes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ray Collington, @Don Diego - alright I just did the spirit test and all 6 lost a little bit of spirit but held most of it. I don't feel any ridges on the liners. They all seemed to loose it in roughly the same spot, maybe leaking through the ring gaps?
      You are right Ray, one piston does show some damage but it is not from anything in its current shape. The valves and everything where intact on that hole. Must've been pulled apart at some point in the past (probably multiple times).

      @@DMIDoes You're most likely safe to not do a total rebuild of your engine. Like you said it isn't going to be putting in super hard days for years and years.

    the barring tool could it be that you remove the starter and place the tool in that spot?

    • @DMIDoes
      @DMIDoes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right James, but I think there is a special adapter tool that you need that fits in the spot where the starter goes. I was watching another video and they had an adapter that looks like the gear side of the starter that bolted in and then you put the barring tool into that.

    I've really been enjoying your videos lately. Anyways what i would have done is remove fuel canisters, sediment trap, unhook fuel lines (blow them out), and also take the time to remove the fuel tank and thoroughly! flush & clean it. The same with the Radiator or at very least flush it... I'd be smart and do the same with the oil system. Especially that Oil pickup filter! P.s You'd think those old engs had a spot to bar over the eng... Odd it doesn't.

    As I understand it not all models of Cat engine require a barring tool, for example apparently the 3306 doesn't.

    You are this far, I think I’d go further…I see your side of it though, pretty sure you don’t have a money tree. But I’d hate to mess that head up. With greater compression now…bugs may come up.
    Good video great sound!!

      Hey thanks for the nice comments! I know, I'm still debating on what to do. I think I will attempt to remove the oil plate this weekend and see how that goes and make my decision based on that.

    Is it complicated to import parts of this dozer to Brazil? It is worth it?

    Don’t think you will regret at least one holing it! Those engines are known for getting a lot of rust around the liners causing over heating issues.

    • @DMIDoes
      @DMIDoes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know that about the rust around the liners, I suppose I better have a look. Dang it, I just want to bulldoze stuff, but all my projects seem to require a ton of work before I can actually use them for their intended purpose.

      These engine don’t have a spot for a barring tool best thing is a big ratchet on the center crank bolt! To put it on tdc there is a plug by the starter to put a 3/8 bolt in that will line up with hole in flywheel for tdc.
