I am a Theravada Buddhist from Sri Lanka. Anguli malas former name was Ahinsaka (the innocent one). The day he was born his mother was bleeding somuch it was as if someone had been murdered. But his mother was ok and didn't even have any compications due to this heavy bleeding..which shocked everyone present. Also, It is said that that the moment of his birth All the weapons in the kingdom glistened and shined fiercely at night even with no light present...these were Omens that he would become a terrible murderer one day. It was actually his Jelous teacher who asked him to get him a necklace of 101 fingers as an offering over a misunderstanding. What he wanted was to get angulimala killed doing so. However, being a skilled warrior he didn't have much trouble defeating his opponents. He was just a innocient fellow compelled to kill people so he could repay his teacher. He just went insane after he killed innocient people thus changing from Ahinsaka to Angulimala over time. Based on our teachings Angulimala may have actually killed thousands of people in those dark jungle paths. He just went insane with bloodlust and cruelty he didn't notice that fingers were eaten away by maggots, rotting and falling off from his necklace, and getting snatched by crows, etc when he was sleeping and moving about. Each night he counted and each night he saw that he needs more and more fingers to fulfill his goal..it was an endless circle of killing. Finally, he caught up and he just wanted one more finger to fullfil his aim...He was desperate to handover the cursed nexklace to his teacher and put an end to this misserable task. At this same moment the complaints were piling up so much over the years at the Kings court that he finally ordered this entire army to raid the Jungle and Kill angulimala. Upon hearing this Angulimalas mother went to the jungle to save her child as a mothers love for her some is boundless- even if he was a murderer. Buddha was meditating and he saw all of this. Angulimala had the fortune to attain enlightenment BUT if he killed his mother in his bloodlust...He will end up doing a Anantareeya Sin. Which will cast him to an almost enless suffering in Hell. This was the time to intervene...So Buddha in his unmatched kindness...and sympathy towards angulmala appeared infront of him just in time. Then the I have stopped - why dont you stop ? conversation happens. followed by angulimala coming to his senses and then being asked to break a leaf off a tree. Which he did. Then buddha asked him to put it back right as it was before. He obviously couldnt . So Buddha explained, See you took something you cant give back to the tree. How many lives have you taken away that you cant give back to their families and loved ones ? upon hearing this angulimala broke down - understanding his sins. After which buddha gave him a teaching which transformed anguimala to a Buddhist Monk. Angulimala Thero is one of my most beloved characters from buddhist Sagas. It is said that he was haunted by all the people he killed all this life but he never got angry or upset. He prayed for all those souls and Lived the life of a True Buddhist Monk till his last day. His kindness is still legendry. He once heard a pregnant woman criying in pain as the baby was stuck in her womb and not getting delivered. He ran to buddha and asked him to help the poor woman. Buddha taught him a Sutra and told Angulimala thero - If there is anyone who is suitable to bless that poor woman it is you angulimala. The feeling of kindness you got when you heard that mother is trule. for you have ended lives without mercey and the Mercy that falls upon your heart is True. So go to her..and pray - Pray that I angulimala who had killed so may without mercy became a monk and from that day has not hurt any living thing - May the universe be the witness to this and If this Is True - Make this poor sisters Pains go away. Let her deliver a healthy child. And it is said that the universe was witness to this and The lady ended up delivering a Health Child. Even today in Sri Lanka. Buddhinst monks visit Pregnant mothers close to the date of delivery to Recite the Angulimala Piritha/ suttra. - It is said that even if angulimala thero is no more. Still the universe listens and responds to his sutra. Peace.

The story is not exactly the same as the original.
His real birth name was "Ahimsaka" which means innocent. The number of fingers he hunted was 1000 and he collected 999 before he was trying to kill his mother. That's where Buddha intercepted and the story goes on a bit different than Sadhguru said it.
But the morality of the story is similar. Very beautiful. Much respect to Sadhguru for spreading Lord Buddha's stories too. 🙏🙏🙏

    Complete story of Ahinsaka(Angulimaala) :::
Ahinsaka (most innocent), was a very kind and a clever student. He loved everyone beyond frames, he was extremly gud at studies and was very clever. He was loved by many and specialy his teacher. He was his teachers favorite student. Teacher loved him so much tht even made other children jealous of him over time. So they got together and made gossips bout ahinsaka and told his teacher most of the time. And when time pass by gossips got worse and worse and those other students told the teacher tht ahinsaka had some kind of affair with his wife. Teacher was so heartbroken amd angry bout ahinsaka now. He was so mad tht one day he asked Ahinsaka to bring him 1000 fingers of people. Ahinsaka wanted to prove how obedient he was so he accepted with much pain. No matter how kind he was society was rude on him. And when he started killing... It became worse. He killed people recklessly. He was so obidient tht he didnt cut all fingers from one. He had to kill 1000. After a very short period of time he was a monster with long beard.. Burnt skin, dirty cloths, blood allover. He was so fearsome with his sword lifted high chasing after people. People left villages. Slowly it became hard for him to find people. When he needed the last one or two.... His blind mother had come in search of him. Buddha too at the same time got to know bout him and came rejecting other monks' warnings. Ahinsaka who is now angulimaala ( fingerneckless man) was frustrated and gone insane.. He just needed one or two. He was highly determind to kill any person who appear imfront of him. Buddha appeared before his mom. Angulimaala without thinking twice chased buddha shouting and lifting the sword high. Buddha too ran faster than him through the forest. Angulimala yelled at buddha to stop. But he ran even faster. Angulimala was very tired. He stoped and yelled buddha to stop. Buddha did not stop running. Buddha yelled back saying tht he ISNT moving and tht angulimaala is the one who IS running. Angulimaala was confused. He got even more angry and yelled at buddha asking why he said such a stupid thing. Then buddha came closer and explained.... I have STOPED and u r still RUNNING. When he repeatedly say it. Angulimaala got the point!! He was shocked. And he realised bout his mind which was on a continous reckless run. And knelt infront of buddha crying and asking buddha to take him away fron this curse and ordain as a monk. So he did and ordered him to go back to the same village which he killed people. So he went as a monk. People saw tht he had no SWORD in his hands . So they started hitting angulimaala monk with rocks and did every thing tht almost killed him. When buddha came he was bleeding severly. Buddha asked to stop and explained people the importance of FORGIVING. Becus Ahinsaka had gone through a hell in his life.... He became a fully awekened being(arhat).
:::: if a person is willing to chnge... We always should forgive. Becus after all those mistakes and all those hard times... He maybe another buddha!! :::

Some will call it Buddhism, some will call it actually a branch of Hinduism, I feel this simply is Indian Philosophy. Many kinds of AnguliMaals may be found in all the societies around the planet across the history... But the way how to deal with the Angulimaal's approach of life will also be different in various parts of the world. What Buddha did, or what this story tries to convey to the mass, signifies Ancient Indian Dharma that uniquely empasized on expanding one's Dharma within oneself to attain fulfillment through Yog, not dreaming pumping the religion or set of beliefs towards the world blindly.

Angulimala's story is a lesson that everyone can change their life for the better, even the least likely people. The story of Angulimala teaches us that the possibility of Enlightenment may be awakened in the most extreme of circumstances, that people can and do change, and that people are best influenced by persuasion and above all, example. Aṅgulimāla's conversion is a testimony to the Buddha's capabilities as a teacher.

In my Hindi book the story was completely different. Buddha told anguli mala to go and pluck the flower for me. Anguli mala goes and got the flower then buddha tells him to go and joint these flowers back to it's original position. But anguli mala couldn't do that, so he gave him the lesson that it is easy to break anything but it is difficult to fix it. In hindi the chapter was called "Todo nahi Jodo", which means Don't break it, fix it. 😅

It will be great if devotees of all religions follow only the essence of their religious teachings. If this happens, most of our miseries and sorrows will go out of our lives. No religion is bigger than humanity.

@No mud,No lotus Why would you say that? I'm myself from family of Vaishnavism and yet my favorite God is God Shiva. We all worship Goddess Durga during festival Navaratri. Almost all my family members including my parents are Vaishnava. We all visit Shiva Temple regularly as it happens to be closer to our resident. I've been visiting Shiva temple since I was a baby (When I was absolutely clueless). Even their parents had them visit Shiva temple since Childhood.
Lord Narayan has clearly said that "He is Shiva and Shiva is him" at many instances. I can immediately Give citation if you want.
Lord Shiva is synonymous to Vishnu/Narayan/Krishna according to Vaishnavism. When we worship, we worship one of the forms of supreme reality that we are fond of. Be it Rama or Krishna or Narayana or Buddha or Shiva.
For example my cousin who is fond of God Rama's form and his peaceful nature. That does not mean that he considers God Rama is different from Krishna or Shiva. He knows from within that all are same.
There are some who find peace in krishna's name, While I'm fond of God Shiva and find peace in him. For me my personal favorite is God Shiva.
So what are you talking about brother?
Brother all I can say is you probably have generalized opinion about Vaishnavas.
I've seen some of these comments/misconceptions popping up only recently. I had never heard of such a thing before. So Brother, I humbly request you not to have this misconceptions!
We Vaishnavas love God Shiva and mother Durga. They are different forms of supreme reality. We Hindus from every sect consider all forms of supreme reality as one supreme reality (regardless of any sect).
I hope my comment will now change your opinion and conceptions about us.
Linga Purana and Agni Purana are considered as two of major Puranas in Shaivism sect! Both these Puranas also mention Buddha as an avatar of God Vishnu.
Just ask for citations if you need!
