Angulimala ( previously called Ahinsaka) was doing it as a “guru pooja “. He was a bright student and the rest of the students were jealous. So they put things on his teachers head. Teacher demanded a 1000 of fingers as his fees hence Ahinsaka went on a killing spree.
1000 fingers maybe an exaggerated figure, 101 is believable.(I'm a Buddhist).
Exactly, I've read that somewhere about Angulimala committed this twisted puja because of his teacher's misdirected teaching.

Actually people who are at the extremes of society can become monk easily because they are used to be shunned, disregarded, or feared.. People like us who care abt morality, and people, and society take the longest time. They are a already close to the boiling point, a little bit of heat and they are vapors, lukewarm water takes time.
