I am about to re-pot (for the first time) my little lemon tree and two blood orange trees I grew from seed. I have watched this video a few times and it has great information. I am now ready to re-pot. Thank you, Laura, for your help with citrus and all the other plants, and trees, you love so much. Please send good healthy vibes to my little trees.

I have a few dwarf citrus trees planted in half wine barrels with casters on the bottom so I can wheel them in and out of the garage if its going to freeze. I also learned that keeping them out of that hot afternoon sun as you mentioned, keeps the blossoms going longer. Thanks for all the great info!

There is really nothing that rivals the fragrance of citrus blossoms. The tiny trees they sell in garden centers are so tempting because of it. But in this area, it is a lot of work to bring them inside for the Winter. It really has to be a labor of love.

You can do either or, depending on how warm your house is, how much sun you get and it is always good for them to go outside in the summer, but you don't have to, if you have good lighting and warmth (especially with citrus trees). Really depends on where you live too.

I used Neem oil in a spray bottle for leaves, and I make my own Colloidal Silver Water for pennies on a dollar. I spray some of both a couple of times per month. This keeps fungus , mold and Nematodes at bay. Insects or worms leaf miner are killed with the Neem oil spray.
It's a great preventative , instead of waiting until you see something , THEN trying to get rid of the pesty bug or mold or fungus.

Living in southeast Alaska I never thought someone could get a fruit tree like an orange tree to grow. I was house sitting for a friend years ago, walked in their door and there was this gorgeous orange tree that had a couple not quite ripe oranges. Oh my word I was so surprised. I have 8 citrus, different kinds, in pots and for about 3 years had a major infestation of mealy bugs. What a pain. I found the only way to control them was to take a bucket of soapy water, put a sock over my hand, and wash as many leaves on each tree as I could. I finally got rid of them, but ended up losing the one that brought the bugs in to begin with.
Good info, though, and in line with what I've experienced so far. I live in Georgia, so your recommendations for water, light and temps are spot on.

One more thing: The fruit will get quite large and stay very dark green. You must be patient! It takes months for the green fruit to turn yellow! I usually harvest mine just as cold weather is beginning to come- late October, early November. The skins of the lemon will turn bright yellow and soften a bit. Give a little tug and it should release from the tree. Enjoy! Nothing like a Meyer Lemon.

      Branka Zorić,
FERTILIZE!! I recall a great garden advisor radio show years ago saying, fertilize more often than the label recommends, with a lesser amount of fertilzer or weaker dilution rate. Object being a constant availability of nutrients. That was using straight old-school kind of fertilizer; today's more likely are Organic, time-release stuff that may make this unnecessary. But still, fertilzer should make a difference.
Pruning is probably just as important, and after pinching, the fertilizer will cause faster growth, allowing you to control the basic shape of the tree.

Oh my word! This makes me so happy. I've been devouring "all" the potted citrus"videos and web pages I can get my hands on lately... and then my favourite garden vlogger comes out with a video days later! :-D :-D
My many poor potted citrus have had a hard life 6 years of moving around rental houses waiting for me to move into one of my own in order to plant them. This year they've got lots of deficiencies, because I've been too busy renovating and having surgeries - and this past Summer (it is Winter now) and all my fruit trees were hit with so many the boring and sap sucking bugs... possums and wallabies too. :-( They're very unhappy plants.

@@OxfordComma47 hehehe! They are wonderful creatures. I absolutely love having macropods on my property. :) wallabies, padamelons, (bettongs), potoroos and possums (different to yours) are like deer, where I live. They will eat every plant they can get their tiny grabby hands on. I'm trying in vein to grow two purple flowering hebes as lollipops and a hedge of variegated pittosporum as a hedge, but they keep getting stripped... The bark is scraped off or stripped, branches broken or rendered useless causingdie back, and the leaves are all gone. :( I used to think olive trees, lavenders and citrus were not eaten by possums (cute little banes of my existence), but they have been eating everything. Sighhhh. People in my area shoot or run over native and escaped animals (Australians aren't great people as a whole) and I refuse to harm them no matter what. I just wish there was something I could spray on the plants that would work! I have electronic animal repellers (emit sounds and leaving lights that they don't like) but they don't seem to help. And brush tail possums will climb over any any fences or through tiny gaps like Toombs from the X Files and wallabies will bound over our cattle fencing. Can't keep them out. 😭😂 Making things grow here is like banging your head on a brick wall. Add to that my destructive geese, ducks, chooks and goat and I realise it is a labour of love with a large helping of frustration and pushing a bike up a steep hill. 😂 :) I ❤️animals and plants.

They built a ‘sun porch’ on the north side of their house - floor to ceiling windows, half of them open, glass ceiling/roof. Or maybe high impact plastic. They put their garden in there. It’s like a lean-to added to the side of the existing room. Now the windows on that side of the house open into the sunroom - concrete unfinished floor. It’s like putting windows around a side porch. Anyway - lush garden they have!! They have lemon trees and those Aussie limes. Beautiful! And bearing fruit. One is getting so big they’re going to have to do something with it - prune or move somewhere else. And shelving covered with veggies in pots and wooden beds. Maybe you could do that at your place? I think it has rained a handful of times within a year. However, I do get fog and more wind than I expected. The plan is to have it in a pot until my landscaping is completed. Once done I will plant it in the ground. It will be at least a year wait. I have almost everything I need and hopefully I won’t kill it beforehand.

Marian Kay, if you plant one (potted citrus)) you will not regret it! If you happen to get fruit you can give it away🍋🍋🍋(i recommend lemon; Meyer or Dwarf Eureka, but i guess it depends on your climate etc-- they require plenty of sun/heat) The citrus blossom fragrance is divine! If you enjoy morning coffee in the sunshine on your deck or patio, and the potted lemon is blooming nearby, you will not want to move 😄. If you don't sit outdoors in the morning, having the potted lemon near an open window is second best.
I know what you mean though, about watching the Garden Answer videos. They've got ten times the space as me (at least!) but watching her landscaping decisions and planting ideas can be mesmerizing. Hence no planting chores getting done at MY house!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a 10 yr old blood orange & Meyer lemon in 20” pots and was curious as to whether or not I needed to put them in bigger pots. They seem happy and have produced well, so i didn’t really want to upset them. I have a Meyer lemon and Key lime tree both in the same pot (FL zone 8b)...the Meyer is loaded with fruit but the key lime is struggling...it blooms then fruits but they fall off after several weeks. I’m thinking I should separate them into separate pots before I lose the key lime altogether. Super informative and inspirational as always! Thanks for all you do!! 💚🍋

    • @matthewkheyfets1309
      @matthewkheyfets1309 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@CaptainKurtAnnapolis mine are young but I'd say no because I don't get enough light indoors or outdoors because of the way the yard is. Otherwise, I think I would have much better plants in general. I get sun usually between 7am-2pm and not all of it is strong direct light. The rest is shaded and it's simply not enough full strength light to grow as much as I want and then indoors is a nightmare. So...fruit not happening soon for me.

I just read something today, about Avocados being self pollinating, but that the window when the flower is open, is only for a couple hours per day for only three or four days! I am going to start another one from a pit, hopefully they can do what nature wants without intervention from me. Oh, they also said pot-grown trees won't fruit. 😯 However I refuse to believe that, and I'm going to try anyway!! There's lots of info online, and I'm sure there must be a "Growing Avocados in Pots" video on YT.
