This is one of Drumeo's favorite videos... seconded by Samus doing the cheat sheet on Zeppelin. Just having a peek in their minds and see how some of the greats tackle challenges. Even as a non-drummer, it's inspiring.
For me, any odd times outside of 4/4, I do need to know the math before I can play it. Also, I can't play it if I don't feel it. So I learn the math initially, so I know my parameters. After that, every performance of it is done by feel.
