      Use this recipe,But add some bean sprouts And thinly sliced Napa cabbage too It.I am from the east coast. Brooklyn New York to be exact, and Trying to get chow mein like that anywhere else is really hard!

  • @BryanJohnson1969
    @BryanJohnson1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Add bok choy or napa cabbage. Also a slurry of cornstarch and water will thicken the sauce. The sauce is basically the vegetable water and the cabbage helps out with that.

    This is my wife's favorite take out dish! We moved a couple towns away and both the Chinese restaurants here only make the more traditional chow mein, basically lo mein with soft fried noodles. Will definitely give this a try.

    Yes, this is the east coast (or NY style) that I know of and like. I also think bean sprouts can be added for a veggie triad of celery-onion-bean sprouts. Great insight on the noodles (new insight to me). In restaurants, slicing of celery (short strips) sometimes differs, too. Thanks!

    I remember this from my youth growing up in NJ. I married a California girl and moved out west. What an adjustment! They call this chop suey out west. Also spicy is the name of the game. Still, for fun I tried this recipe. Thanks to my wife, I had everything I needed right in the cupboard! It was exactly as I remembered Chicken "CHOW MAIN." Out west, ya better call it " "CHOW MIN" unless you want to be laughed at. Anyway, it's just a little bland without at least some chili oil/sauce added in. Also you forgot the MSG. It's the magic ingredient in all Americanized Chinese food. I buy it by the pound! Anyway Wolfie, you took me back to my childhood and that was great fun.

    Larry, what really appeals to me is how nicely you marinated the chicken. The sauce seemed to thicken up just right too. Your chow Mein is fit for the Chinese emperor!

    • @TheWolfePit
      @TheWolfePit  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you John! The marinade is literally where all of the flavor in this dish comes from and though it doesn't 'smack you in the mouth' with flavor, it's a very appealing and filling meal. This version of chicken chow mein is unlike most versions, that have either boiled or fried noodles cooked in with it. This is how it's made here on the East Coast! It's fairly low carb too minus the rice!

    There's no bean sprouts or bok choy or bamboo shoots or water chestnuts in your recipe. I live on the East Coast and chicken chow mein has celery, onions, bok choy, sprouts, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots where I come from. I grew up eating chicken chow mein. It's my favorite chinese dish.

    Looks good...is there a particular reason why cooks cut the celery the way that you did? Presentation?

    • @TheWolfePit
      @TheWolfePit  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes bigger, thinner and more tender pieces. It also cooks faster and definitely makes for a nicer presentation.

      I bought sesame oil for the first time, man is it ever strong. Small doses for sure if used.

      That's how we do it on the East Coast, USA. In UK, they add cooked egg noodles to chow mein--ugh! This recipe is what I was looking for.

    Forget frying noodles La Choy makes chow mein noodles in a bag they're thin and crispy and tasty a hell a lot better than fried wonton strips

    It is surprising you don't use aromatics in oil in the pan before adding chicken. We add garlic and ginger, which broadens the flavor profile. But, there are ao many ways to make chow mean, some add sesame oil, oyster sauce, rice wine, etc.

      @TheWolfePit  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't add any salt, the soy sauce and chicken broth was sufficient for my taste. If you prefer more salt, go ahead and add a little to your liking!
