I rebuild both stems and both seats. Often I can remove the deposits from the old stems and change the washers, packing and seats, greasing everything. If the stem washer screws break off then I replace the stems. The old leaded brass stems lasted a long time. The new lead free alloys won't last that long IMHO. If you are lucky and the seats come out undamaged, you may be able to lap the flat sealing surface of the seats flat again and reuse them, or save them as a spare. Nice clear video, Bob.
I like the tip about snapping the handles off, much easier than a handle-puller. I used to keep a Pfister rebuild kit handy, that was the most common three handle in my area
I do dozens of these each year. I've never grease anything on faucet tub valves. I've never gotten a call back. Yet. I have silicone grease but I use it for other things - like where the threads have a hard time starting, like on old used brass fittings.
Hey Bob, i do my gerber shower valves the same way! I do it all the time!. We must have the same perspective on this plumbing. i have had a strange week. I have worked on about 5 or 6 of these in the past few days. The best seats are the monel gerber seats. I love monel seats. During this pandemic we were sent brass gerber seats. I do have a lot of price pfister monels tho! I Putty behind the sleeves!
I agree, Full rebuild is definitely the way to go. Properly maintained they will last a lifetime. Can't say the same for all the newer pressurebalanced counterparts, a shame really. down south seat removal is almost impossible most of the time.
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. Looks like a relatively easy application. Are the valves in the kit one size fits all? The plumbing in the apartment dates back to the 1950's. Thank you.
Those kits are for specific manufacturers and must be exchanged for a like kind manufacturer. In my service area Gerber is the most popular followed by Price Pfister and Central. One size does not fit all!
If you are having to rebuild these (removing them completely and replacing), is there any reason we couldn't go with a different style so long as it had 3 handles?
The rebuild kits are manufacturer specific, and not interchangeable. They're available for a wide variety of manufacturers and good option if the customer doesn't want to open the wall to replace the entire shower body.
Is there an attachment to a drill that can remove those seats? Mine, in an old Brooklyn pre-war apartment, are wedged in so tight that I almost hurt my hand trying to get them out. Would be good to know. Thanks!
I'm trying to work that out. A lot of folks get annoyed if you start filming in their home, I know many youtubers do it but technically you have to get the homeowners permission. Stay tuned!
It’s a shame now a days that some plumbers or handyman will tell the owner we need to break the wall to replace the valve body. Why?? Caused they don’t know how or they think it’s not worth their time they want to get my big $$$ by making it a big job. I always tell customers plumbing fixtures, valves , pumps , Ect Ect can be repaired. Bob, great video that’s exactly how I do repairs or complete rebuilds. They are some money for the parts but way cheaper than tearing out a wall. Most old homes have a access panel in closets ( mostly) to assess the valve or waste and overflow than maybe replace the valve body from behind but than again it’s lathe and plaster which can be a bitch to work on
Hi I just did this with a Gerber kit. All new stem valves / seat etc. My cold water has a slow drip …any suggestions as to why ? Thank you …You are the best!
Thanks Bob. I use the book at Home Depot to identify stems and their manufacturer. Then, yes, it is a good idea to change all the stems and the diverter all at once. I have the dark colored plumbers grease. Is that just as good as the silicone grease?
45 years plumbing silicone grease like my right arm. You sir are a no B.S. plumber I like your style . There is one on U tube will not mention his name . You figure it out . Have a good one.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos just asking. I work on cars. So I know antiseize works well on lug nuts and certain brake parts. I didn't know it could be used in plumbing.
You can try a "Re-seating Tool" to resurface the seat although they no longer make quality re-seating tools. Mostly imported garbage, but it's the only option besides replacing the shower body. amzn.to/3B5lO5S
What might cause water to drip from the tub spout after the water is turned off. It drips for about 30 seconds or so then stops until the next shower. Should I be concerned. There is no dripping from the handle or shower head. Just the spout. It is a Gerber product and is 20 yrs old. Just your thoughts. Tks
Are three valve systems no longer used? Going to single handle because of scalding ? What is the correct answer? I prefer three valve system especially for SENIORS. Can control the hot and cold MUCH BETTER. Of course must have Personal Responsibility.
Nice ,just did mine 2months ago😂 I'm changing the bathroom soon going to a single lever ! 🥃🥃🍺🍺🍺🍇🏌 Stay safe. Retired(werk'n)keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses.
I’m not a plumber, but as a customer I would want a complete rebuild. When one goes bad the others can’t be far behind. Nice job Bob. 👍👍
Nice job. It is always nice when something can be rebuilt instead of replaced.

Bob, I was taught by a gentleman just like you. Use grease and silicone. Thank you for your videos. Stay well Sir.
Nice work and i love your narration and the tools you used. I would really enjoy to see you make videos of your work. Regardless keep the vids coming
Great video! Always the best advice and best instructions. Also appreciate the product recommendations.

I have gerber, price fister and central kits on my service van. I use Gerber 90% of the time.
Good idea with the silicone greece. Recently replaced diverter because old gasket was mangled.
Good call sir replacement of all , I’ll try and grease everything honestly never done it though I do grease my cartridges. Good video

As always great work
Nice Work Bob

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks Bob!
Where can I buy the kit?
Do you service the Glen Oaks area?
I've always rebuild them unless cost is higher than replacing like old school kohler, speakman, and other brands stems cost the same as the entire valve

Any trouble removing the seats?
Never had issues removing seats, make sure you have a good quality seat removal tool. The imported cheap steel tools are a waste of time.
Is there an attachment to a drill that can remove those seats? Mine, in an old Brooklyn pre-war apartment, are wedged in so tight that I almost hurt my hand trying to get them out. Would be good to know. Thanks!
Bob: Could we have a moving video
in place of pictures?

If all else is working fine, I would remove that seat and put some Teflon on the thread’s re- install and see if that stops it.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos thanks for getting back…I did try that…twice.
Do you make house calls? 😄
Thanks Bob. I use the book at Home Depot to identify stems and their manufacturer. Then, yes, it is a good idea to change all the stems and the diverter all at once. I have the dark colored plumbers grease. Is that just as good as the silicone grease?

As I always say, “brown in the morning, plumbers warning”.
i just put in a gerber today but it wasnt leaking right now and i tried to get the stem out it would not budge so i put everyhting on except the stem.
Before breaking the wall I rather try to repair the shower valve. The gerber 3 handle shower valves take a hell of a beating before they die
Bulletproof!
Would anti seizure compound work on the handle screw threads?
I don’t see why not 👍

What if the seats are so wedged in that you absolutely cannot get them out? I have the same tools btw. Thanks! - Rent Stabilized Renter in Brooklyn

Residual water from the shower riser which is normal.
How much for this job?
$700 - $900 depending on job conditions.

If they’re existing you can rebuild or repair them. If you’re going to change it out, single lever anti scald valve only.
