I like Walker, but he's 34 and cost them a draft pick. It made zero sense to mortgage the future for an aging stop gap. Dana Brown is terrible. Should have just gotten Josh Bell on a 1 year deal for a lot cheaper. He would have had money to sign Bregman if he didn't give a closer $95M.
@@BigMike-Soetoro not really. But when Dana's first words are he needs to re-sign the core guys, he failed. The only one he re-signed was 34 year old Altuve and then gave $95M to a closer. An aging 2B, an aging 1B and a closer...great roster construction. He also got a light return for Tucker. The guy drafts horrible. He's just all around bad.
This is a good pickup! Should be another 30+ dinger guy along with Paredes in the lineup. I will also miss Breggy but he probably wants too much being this might be his last contract. Still over a month till spring training and I think the Stros have 1 more big move left.
They got a couple left. They still want to boost the pen, and rumor is, Verlander is coming in for a major paycut, because him and Crane are friends and Verlander got 35mill last year.
@@JustLikeHeaven77the Astros are so close to the tax bracket after this signing, which would make them lose more picks, that I doubt they will make big moves after this…unless they take money off by trading Framber and Presley.
The answer to that is nobody. There’s no “replacing” Tucker. My guess would be that our top prospect Jacob Melton will got a chance to try. At least I hope so.
@@theoperry3236you’re probably right. I wish Melton would get his chance. Rookies usually don’t start on teams in win now mode. But baseball is a crapshoot. At some point you have to stick your neck out.
@@theoperry3236 I think that’s a good comparison. Arrighetti’s season was a mixed bag. With a pitching staff being decimated by injuries, he may have been forced into a role that he wasn’t ready to take on. Maybe Melton’s would be the same. Tucker was sent back down for a while after he came up here the first time. Maybe the same thing would happen with Melton. But he needs his chance to prove himself at some point.
Sad to see Breggy go. Was a huge part of what was one of the tightest club houses in baseball and a great player. But I gotta say this is win for the Astros.
Completely agreed. He had a very good fair market offer on the table, Astros were smart to pivot and not wait for an answer. At this point I won’t be surprised if Bregman ends up with a very similar contract to what Astros offered. Only team I see left willing to pay $200m would be Toronto, but does Bregman want to play out the rest of his career in Canada with a less competitive team? I’ll never understand why players don’t value location and team more. Once I get passed $100m, I don’t need to fight for the extra few million, I just want to be happy
Much prefer Christian Walker coming to the Astros over Nolan Arenado.... Walker had great numbers in 2024, Arenado did not, Walker appears to stay in his lane and respects his role, Arenado does not, Walker does not appear to have a chip on his shoulder, Arenado appears to.... even though they are the same age within a month of each other, no comparison.... Walker is the clear all around choice!
Wow... @3:31 Pete Walker would be a perfect 1st basemen! Hits for power & plays golden glove defense!!! In all seriousness, great signing by the Astros. Not too pricey & if he slumps, his defensive is always reliable!
No mention of Red Sox, who have need to upgrade 1B in their lineup, and lost power hitting OF O'Neill from their lineup to the Orioles. Alonso would fill their needs in Boston. Boston has the money.
Paredes plays 1st and 3rd. Walker plays first, so default is Paredes to 3rd. If they do sign Bregman he could move to shortstop and push Pena into the outfield.
I'd love the Yankees to get a good defensive third and first basemen that can hit from the left side/switchhitter. If that guy could get on base a good chunk of the time, that'd be great. Someone who could hit in front of Judge. Hopefully, Belly will provide Judge some protection and drive guys in behind Judge.
Great sighing here but the Yusei Kikuchi trade is starting to come back and bite us in the azz giving up 3 guys for a rental and one of them being Kyle Tuckers Replacement in Joey Loperfido will hurt us in the outfield. While Melton will get his shot he is more suited to center field rather than right.
Something about free agency needs to change to make teams like the Mariners more attractive. I'm sick of hearing about Houston, the Evil Empire and the Dodgers.
Abreu was 36 and already had a down year before signing. Walker just won his 3rd gold glove, he's 33, and his numbers are consistent with Bregman. And he did it in Arizona which is not a hitter friendly park. Walker and Paredes are pull hitters so the Crawford Boxes offer up a nice short range target for them to shoot for. Walker has good power as well. He's hit numerous 460ft or longer homers. Bregman has never touched 460ft ever. He rarely hits on over 400ft. So I disagree on Walker being an Abreu 2.0
Bregman was plan A, Arrenado was plan B, but plan Christian Walker was the best option, W
I was thinking Houston would sign Alex Bregman and Christian Walker for it to be a Christmas miracle.
@@SuperiorPanda27 before paredes ya, but after, I kinda like Walker for 3 even better than giving Bregman for 3-5
