One would think that chess engines wouldn't sacrifice major pieces for merely positional advantage, without an immediate forced recapture following a few moves later. And, in fact, for the longest time most chess engines were incapable of this, because they just couldn't see "positional advantage" well enough nor far enough, and thus they only saw that losing a major piece is really bad for their position. Modern chess engines are better at this because of their better evaluation functions and their sheer processing power, and neural networks changed this in a drastic way, because NN's are essentially god-like positional evaluation at the cost of calculation speed. But a god-like positional evaluation is all that it takes.
