Making Interesting Bails: A Silversmithing Tip

  • This tip shows how to make 3 different types of bail with variations for each. There are tons of variations as far as designs for these go. These are simple to make, so are a suitable beginner project. The materials for these can vary, but for these ones, I used mostly 18 gauge round wire, 10 gauge sterling square wire, and 18 gauge and 22 gauge pieces of scrap silver sheet. This will probably be part of a series where I show a few different bails each time.

      You are welcome Daisy May! I get stuck in ruts sometimes with bails too. I’ll probably periodically make another bail video with some other different ideas:). Thanks for the nice comment!

    These bails are super duper, I love all the great ideas here.
    I used to be really intimidated about using a jeweler's saw. I decided I was going to give it a go and really try to get good at it. Now, it's one of my favorite things to do, I get into kind of a Zen space and let the world melt away while I saw away happily on a piece of metal.
    Thanks for another great video, I really love your channel.

    Hey Chad! I just made a triangular sandwich bail. It turned out fantastic. Thank you for such great tutorials. I am in the process of dressing the bail up now with a little wire twist and stone set in the middle. So happy! Thank you!

    Thank you Chad for your excellent instruction, calm and patient manner. You are very talented and inspire me to become a similar silversmith. I have been learning from TH-cam but will be starting classes in the fall. Back to school at age 64! I will forever learn because there is so much to try to know!! Thank you again.

      Hi Carol, Chad is an excellent teacher & has helped me a lot. Also, maybe I shouldn’t mention it here, but if you’re watching videos to help as tutorials, please look at Estona Metalsmithing, she has an 18 week course, (1 hour each) free to watch on her channel. It helped me refresh my skills and learn new stuff too.

      I'm glad I'm not the only "old lady" here. 😉 It's never too old to learn something new, that's what keeps us young at heart and makes us more interesting. So many wonderful things to do, see, and experience!
      When I was in college I had a 60-something woman in some of my classes. She was very interesting and all us "young-uns" just loved her. I hope you will experience the same acceptance and friendship we poured on Elsa. Good luck with your schooling! Have fun!

      You’re def not the only “person of an older persuasion” here lol. I’m 59 and mostly self taught. I did a lot of jewellery over the years, but I really got into metal smithing over the last 5 years or so and have had the best time exploring the vast possibilities of silver as a medium. As well as Chad, there are several other great YT silver workers, whose work is def worth looking at, like Estona, and Andrew Berry to name just a couple. You’re very lucky to be able to take classes, make the most of them, and best of luck on your silver journey :)

    I simply cannot live without a mug with your mug on it! 😅 Chad, what tip # do you use? It looks like a #1. Also, I'm curious, what do you set your pressure at? And do you drain your line every time you're finished soldering for the day? Thank you! 🌺🌺🌺 Hey! It's a left-hand mug!

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a #1. My gauge doesn’t work quite right, so I open 1/4 turn. I do drain my line after using. 😁
