The standard issue variants of the 191 are comparable to the M4's standard issue variants, in that they are small caliber, high velocity (5.8x42mm), not free floated, have a bolt catch that locks the bolt back on the last round of the magazine and can be dropped from the left side of the rifle. Mechanically, it is slightly superior because it has an anti-pre-engagement mechanism that reduces friction, like an AK, AUG, or M1 Garand, while having otherwise broadly similar mechanisms to an HK416. It would be pretty easy to make a DI or juarez gas QBZ191 variant. Ergonomically, it's still a little inferior, because the Chinese military wanted the charging handle to be in the same place as an AK and reciprocating. Reciprocating isn't a big deal when it's here, but it means you've either gotta go under or use your firing hand if right handed to charge the rifle. Not too big a deal. The magazines are rock and lock, like an AK. This is a bigger deal because training a normal person to use these when you can't see the mag or the rifle is much more difficult and requires much more practice. When using night vision, you typically cannot see the rifle or the magazine, because the focus of the NVG is set to infinity, making pretty much anything within a meter extremely blurry. This is a much bigger deal. Ultimately, a huge leap forward for the Chinese, and roughly on par with a standard issue M4. If it were American made to high quality, I'd slightly prefer it to a standard issue M4. The variant in this video is the QBU-191, which is freefloated. By this fact, it is superior to a standard issue M4, and roughly on par with a Block 2 or Block 3 M4, or an M27 IAR.

And they'll probably churn them out by the millions in peacetime, but I'd be surprised to see PLA infantry in combat outside the UN missions in Africa, where we barely see anything.

The side reciprocating charging handle was added because the higher-ups wanted it since it they were more familiar with it, and it didn't hit the body when holstered on the back when not holding the weapon. Were it not for this, the original design for the charging handle would've been something similar to the ACR or SCAR without the reciprocating feature. As for the rock and lock magazines, they did try to make a mag well version similar to the AR-15 but it didn't work well with the environments that they were testing in. That and it's something they are more familiar with.
