      The type of "rock" matters. Thr best would be obsidian, but it's pointless when you have metal and especially with all the blade steels we have today. Just look up the hardest blade steel and get him to do that

    So the reason that "katana" is sharpened at such odd angles is because the sweatshop that made it probably has 2 grinders set up facing each other and the worker just drops the blade in edge first between them to sharpen. If you don't pay attention while doing that you'll get horribly varied angles on your edge.

    I'm not a sword guy, but I am a chef and I sharpen my own knives. Your whetstone technique is just fine. Too many people rely on fancy gadgets when they, in fact, should just use feelings.

    • @rebel4466
      @rebel4466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well yes and no. The fancy gadget is there to help first and foremost. Either it helps new people to get their skills going without fucking anything up or it's there for pros who have to do a lot of knives in a relatively short amount of time. Of course doing something good by hand is one of the best options.
      As you're a chef... it's great to be able to cut things fast by hand, but how many slicers, mandolines, graters etc. exist to make cutting easier for amateurs (or chefs, like the stuff a good mandoline can do would be close to impossible to do by hand without taking ages). It's not bad because it's a gadget. If it gets you started or does something really fast you otherwise wouldn't have done, it can still be worth it.

  • @codahighland
    @codahighland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    "Did I twist it or something?" Yes. You did. It's called edge alignment and it's the hardest part of swordsmanship. Even getting the angle a little off can make a big difference on the effectiveness, and on a curved blade like a katana the error gets amplified. (A reverse curve like a sickle instead corrects the alignment but sacrifices cutting ratio.)

    I have that Ruixin sharpener and have some things to keep in mind.
    1) Use anglemeter app on phone to check angle between stone clamp and knife.
    2) When clamping make sure to check with the anglemeter that you have the same angle when twisted on the other side. It has a lot of wiggle room before tightened. I place the phone on the side of the knife/blade to check. Usually try to keep to less than 1 degree difference.
    3) Whetstones are call wet cause they use water. Please use it.
    4) Clean residue off before going to a higher grit stone cause the slush will wear out the stones faster.
    5) A sharpie is a essential accessory for this tool.

    if you really want to do sharpening comparisons here is a fairly easy and not to evasive to ones pocket book ither.. Create the sharpest edges known to man with the WEN 10-Inch Two-Direction Water Cooled Wet and Dry Sharpening System. Boasting a 10-inch by 2-inch 220 grit wet sharpening stone and an 8 in. x 1-1/8 in. leather stropping wheel, you'll have everything you need to bring dull tools back to life. The heavy-duty 1.6 Amp motor quietly rotates the wheels at an earnest 115 RPM for maximum precision during operation. Once the edge is nice and sharp, polish and finish the surface on the leather stropping wheel with the included honing compound. Resuscitate dull blades, wood chisels, carving tools, scissors, screwdrivers, lathe tools, axes and more. Reverse the rotational direction with the simple flip of a switch to meet the needs of any task. The universal support adjusts to both horizontal and vertical positions, allowing for jigs and other accessories to be utilized with the machine. The WEN 10 in. Wet/Dry Sharpener also includes an angle guide, a height adjustable water reservoir and a jig for sharpening planer blades and chisels. I actually have that sword. It's a katana machete from Cold Steel. Great blade, but unlike a traditional katana, it's flat steel that is ground sharpened (Like a machete). To sharpen mine, I ditch the stones and use an angle grinder with a sanding wheel. Works great.

    I have that same Ruixin pro sharpener it's such better quality then many other brands. The blade attachment is all one unit compared to many other's that are magnetic and don't hold sturdy. Also to use that kinda sharpener you need a angle finder to be sure you're being accurate because when you flip it over it's off by a few degrees. Plus every blade is different so a angle finder helps big time. But it's an amazing system just not made for sharpening a katana lol. I've had and used mine for a very long time. Do some research Tyler and you will learn this system is amazing when used properly and on the correct blades.

    Did you dry sharpen again? I'm not all the way through the video but you gotta soak the whetstones in water until they stop bubbling and continuously add water to lubricate it. If it's not a whetstone you need to use oil.

    Hey Tyler, I hope you know anything past 1000 grit is mainly for finishing and polishing, higher grit doesn't necessarily mean more sharp.
    Spend longer on your lower grits, when it's good at 1000, you can continue to finish and polish with the higher grits

    Great to see the potential of just regular freehand sharpening! It’s often the best method in my opinion. Using an angle grinder would also work, I sharpen axes that way with great results.

      i tried an angle grinder and completely butchered the edge i had going. chipped it in several spots and dug little gauges in it unevenly. i have no idea how people get so good at that stuff.

    • @mh4392
      @mh4392 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatguybrody4819 Use flap discs of progressing grits, I start with 60 and then 120. Than 2 polishing discs, the last one with compound, and you´ll get a mirror edge. You will have some burr left. Don´t use grinding wheels. Take it slow, and cool your edge down with water pretty often. Start with for example axes and a low angle, i.e. a large edge surface, it will be easier to keep an angle. A little convexity is only good. You will get that muscle memory pretty soon and think it´s easy :)

    The whetstone is what gave you the edge you were so impressed with. It’s the simplest but also most effective method by far if you do it right. A work sharp may give you a consistent edge but it will never give you the results of a whetstone on any cutting tool.

    • @point-five-oh6249
      @point-five-oh6249 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a sword, I'd probably use a grindstone or a belt sander with different grits. Not AS up close and personal as a whetstone, but you're not really supposed to get a sword to be as sharp as an industrial razorblade. Sharpening too much can cause it to chip easier if it hits something harder than your common vegetables and stuff because the edge will be super thin. Razorblades are that sharp because they have barely any weight to them. That sword could've measured like 3x as much as the end result and still would've performed fine without the risk of ruining the blade.

  • @gschannel9366
    @gschannel9366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The technique used to shapren it I don't believe is correct, I could be wrong. But I thought I saw a seperate review of the sharpener and it was used in more of a swooping montion acrossed the length of the blade, wear instead of shaprening the knife along the whetstone, you move the whetstone along the length and sharpening it.

    • @CnCEmpire

      I'm a bladesmith and have been sharpening professionally for over a decade. Never have I seen or heard of someone keeping the blade stationary and moving the whetstone over the edge. The way Tyler does it is correct and the most widely accepted way of sharpening.

    depending on the stones you have, you might have better results with 3 in 1 oil or an actual sharpening compound. I use 3 in 1 on my pocket knifes to bring them back to life after cutting up cardboard and fiberglass, When the metal shavings pollute the stone i give it a spray with wd40 which forces the heavier oil out of the stone, and then clean that off with hot soapy water to get all the dirty oil and metal shavings out of the stone and then once its dry give it new 3 in 1 oil.
    Also you finally tried to help your sword. Have a sub sir.

  • @BJDansie
    @BJDansie ปีที่แล้ว

    Your edge alignment is off and your trying to hit the bottles hard. That’s why your batting them around the room.
    Setup to cut diagonally downward. Raise the blade above your head and allow the blade to fall with its own weight guiding the blade to align it with the cut, don’t try to add force.
    If you get it right you probably won’t even feel the bottle as the blade passes through and the top of the bottle will drop vertically down.
