    This is everything wolfenstein 3D wished it could be. And everything Doom is terrified of becoming.

    That is clearly the original DOOM engine just with wolfenstein level design.

      hmmm nope the Id tech 1 does not makes that behaviors like Cubic Render
      or fast movement the OG have a normal walkspeed and dosent render like a maze and if is 3d can't render normal maps not height parts or stairs...

      @@theoptimus7826 What do you mean? It's clearly the Doom engine, they just designed flat maps similar to Wolf3D's. Even the door behavior is from Doom, as doors in Wolf3D open by sliding left or right, not up or down like the Doom engine.
      This is from a long time ago but even back in the day when I played the Doomstein mod for Wolf3D some of the HUD animations from Doom can't be properly done in Wolf3D and the author of that mod had to make considerable changes to the HUD animations to make them work in Wolf3D.
      Oh, there's also no skybox in Wolf3D. Would have been hard since floors and ceilings were created by flood-filling a single color to the screen.

    The thing that this really emphasized to me is how much of Doom is sound design and music. Despite it being visually quite different, the music helps bridge the gap

    The big problem is that you can't really have projectile enemies (90% of enemies in Doom) because most projectile attacks are bugged in Wolf3D. This is only fixed in ECWolf.

      @Michael Persico ROTT's enhanced Wolf3D engine had some perks over Doom such as damaging parts of the terrain (bullet holes left on walls, breaking glass walls, destroying level items like torches and trees), panoramic skies, and level-over-level environments (through use of the game's GADs. While both Doom and ROTT allow for height differences with stage layout, Doom's engine couldn't render level-over-level stage layouts.) Yeah, I won't argue the Wolf3D engine had its limitations and was starting to show its age in spots by the time ROTT came out. But Apogee made the best of things with it and came out with a pretty fun and, at times, amusing FPS with ROTT that does deserve more love.

    Great work. Doom textures are better, but this engine is really claustrophobic.

    Looks closer to Rise of the Triad than Wolfenstein 3D, albeit without height changes from map to map.

    Wow! That game really doesn't translate well into 90 degree, non-variable walls and a more linear level design. The higher FPS (the original Doom was locked to 30 FPS) only add to the completely alien look and feel.

      @zzador 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UTUBMRBUZZ The wolfenstein engine had no textured floors and ceilings and wasn't even capable of rendering these. That is clearly the original doom engine with just the level design done as in wolfenstein. Besides that the doors had zero thickness in wolfenstein and couldn't even rendered with a thickness. Here a door thickness can clearly be seen.

Did move over to ABC80 and MSX. did some minor demo programming on Atari STE and did finally move over to PC where i did code in Pascal and C++. Did teach myself about dynamic web pages and had some connections and did develop e-commerce sites in coldfusion, PHP, ASP and .NET. Had several different jobs in the IT business all from Server admin to developer, database management and security. Game programming have always been a hobby of mine and is still a thing that i like to learn more about. If you want to learn something just set up a simple goal. Then take one step at the time. The most satisfying thing is too see a thing working on the computer and you have created it yourself. No matter what it is.
