Woodturning - How to Turn Off Center Bowl

  • Full instructional video on how I turn an off-center bowl from apricot wood. I try to explain all the steps here so anyone could follow it, or modify the method to suit them. This means the video is a little longer than my usual, but I wanted this one to be a full walk-through, not just a demonstration like some others I have done. Comments definitely welcome.
Here is Mike Waldt's video demonstrating another method for turning an off center bowl: • Wood Turning - Off Cen...
I also include a little discussion on a sheer cut to remove tear-out from the outside of a bowl, possible ways to finish the bottom, and I even experience a slight "design change" when I make a mistake by hitting the rim of the bowl while I pull my bowl gouge away, not to mention the fact that I hollow this one just a tiny bit too deep, so the foot gets a redesign too.

I have watched several videos tonight about off-center bowls, they were all good but this method was the simplest and easiest to understand, thank you. I have an old piece of very dark walnut that was passed down to me from a father to a son then to me., and I've had it for over 20 years. I think this will do it justice.

A good informative video. Thanks for the tip about waxing the wood screw (having got mine stuck on a number of occasions!) Appreciate sharing your mistake and how you went about remedying it. Furthermore you didn't curse, at least not on screen! Nice work and a nice piece of wood. Tow 'nice's means excellent job!

I'm a UK turner & I make zero mistakes. I do, however, have some really fancy firewood for my log burner. Take a look at an old video from Gary Lowe, a scottish wood turner who makes an eccentric bowl using a simpler method.

That was an excellent video, I don't know why I've waited this long to see how these are made... I don't have a second, larger set of jaws and chuck, also, no cole jaws... I will have to find a different way to do it, or just offset my bowl so much that I could have a decent couple of tenons or mortises using my small 50mm chuck jaws.
    Thank you for sharing this!!

+Yuval Lahav Woodturning Thanks for watching, Yuval. If you check out Mike Waldt's video on off center bowl, linked in my description here, he does it with faceplate. There was a good discussion there about using a glue block as well, maybe glued into a slight recess for strength, so you don't lose too much wood to the faceplate screws. As always, there are many ways to turn just about anything.

nice bowl, I like the moon/ sun feature. think if you faced off the top while you have it on the center hole you could sand it then and not flip it just go straight to the off center hole and only worry with the one tennon. have a good one.
