Agreed! It's always so off-putting as a German when i watch a Movie and they couldn't even bother to hire one of countless actual German Actors living in the USA.
Also regarding the Movie. I come from Berchtesgaden here in Bavaria and here we celebrate Krampus and Perchtenlauf (Just youtube search "Perchtenlauf Berchtesgaden" to see what we do).
I'm also one of the People who dresses up, it's a very old Tradition here. Basically the Perchten roam the Street in their Customs and chase Teenagers with a "Rute", which is a bundle of Sticks and hit them, in some cases if the Teenagers challenge you or are cocky we also wrestle them to the Ground/Throw them to the Ground.
Regarding Krampus (which is connected to the Perchtenlauf) he can visit your Home (if the Parents ask for it) and then basically pretend to kidnap the Kid and bring it outside in the Woods (thats only done in small Villages around here) and then is left there. Obviously since the Parents know all about it, they followed from further away and then pick the scared Kid up and bring it home.
Now i know that this seems horrible for People who didnt grow up with it, naturally, but it's a Tradition that also has it's Purpose. Happened to me to as a Kid because i took a little Money from my Grandparents instead of asking, all i can say is that after that Experience i never stole anything ever again.
We also get many Tourists from the USA during that Time, many of them have completely different Expectations but in general enjoy the Perchtenlauf
Prost and Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

@@chartreux1532 WTF, you actually beat teenagers? I'm German too and I also know the Perchten and Krampus tradition, but nobody ever got hurt and I think it's not okay to actually do this. Okay, there was one time when a Krampus in our school hit a 5th grader with a chain, but he got in so much trouble for it. They even considered cancelling the tradition at the school. I've also never heard of someone actually pretending to kidnap the kids and I also think that's not okay either. As a child, Krampus came to my home along with St. Nikolaus and that was so scary for me already. But he never actually beat me, it was just a threat and that was more than enough.

The whole "why is the grandmother speaking one language and the kid speaking another" thing is actually totally true to life. Same, but with Spanish. My mom is fluent in both Spanish and English (Spanish being her first language), but I lost a lot of my Spanish as I grew up. I can understand it a lot better than I can speak it, however, so my mom will often speak to me in Spanish but I’ll always reply in English. (How my mom decides which language to use, I don’t know. Probably just whichever she feels like at the moment, lol.)
Edit: This really only works if both parties understand the other’s language well enough. Point is, in the case of the movie, it’s still totally believable because we can see that the grandma understands English well, but she’s probably just more comfortable speaking German, and vice-versa for the kid. (As for why she doesn’t speak English when the other family’s around... I mean, she doesn’t like them, right? 😆 Can’t blame her for not wanting to put in the effort for them!)

Krampus' mask is like an intentionally horrifying version of that and it really works with his agenda in the film. Speaking of the horrible norwegian Santa-masks, some friends of mine made a music video with a Killer Santa that uses such a mask. Sooo, I'm German, and my grandma literally told me, Krampus would kidnap naughty kids in his bag...
Every year St. Nikolaus would come to our house on Dec 6th with a Krampus (and sometimes an angel). But he didn't look as scary as in the movie. Krampus had chains with him and a rod/whip with which he is said to beat naughty children. Of course it was just a threat to scare kids, he never really hurt me. I was very scared as a kid, but the strange thing is, I was scared just as much of Nikolaus himself. Because he saw everything and would read out of a golden book, if I were naughty or nice the last year. Of course my parents told the guy some things in advance and in the end I always got little presents. (By the way, I think this tradition is rather common in Bavaria (in southern Germany) and Austria.)

Krampus stops. He reaches slowly for his sack, tucked away in his cloak...
"Stop" says the grandma. She pulls out a snickers candy bar. "Eat this. Your not you when your hungry"

Honestly it does a great job satirizing consumerism from that particular time. With Amazon, I can't say that it has aged particularly well and people who weren't around during that time likely won't understand the experience of holiday shopping in the 90s. If it had stayed the course as a satire movie it would have been much better, but I'm guessing that it was the studio who wanted the slapstick family elements. The slapstick works to a point in satirizing consumerism and capitalism but the movie takes it a tad too far. Still great though and it deserves a second look.

Jingle All the Way (or Mission Julegave lit.: Mission Christmas Present as it's known here) is a heartwarming movie. I know Critic shits all over those kinds of heartwarming feel good movies, but I like em, as they are what I associate with christmas. In JAtW I like the highjinx that ensues when two grown ups fight to get their kid a rare toy, and how the kid who ends up getting it gives it away to the other kid. THAT is the true christmas spirit right there if you ask me, giving up something you really want, because the joy of seeing someone else happy is greater than your own desire for material goods.

I can definitely see where Doug is coming from with how I’m able to look at the film in a positive light despite its flaws and being spread too thin in regards to tone.
