I couldn’t believe the amount of crud that was in my motor. I have at least 6 more to go. Thanks for the video.

I’ve had one of these engines lying around for a couple years and it never ran well, but you have helped me bring life back to it.

Awesome video. All my old Tyco locos are MU2 drives! Did not know the brush plate could be removed!!! Great news I have a motor that ran well till brush plate cover broke!! Will replace from dead motor!! Thank you very much! A GP20 has just been saved!

On losing the springs... Try Kadee coupler springs or Kadee truck springs. Those are sold in packs on their own and always good to have a couple packs on hand.

Currently working on this model and did not go the route in this video. I dremels the rivets and pulled the pins. Drilled out the holes and used M3 bolts with nuts. The two halves came apart and one gear was totally worn down. So I found a guy that sent me a couple new axles with newer gears on them. I put it back together and reinstalled and now the motor doesn’t budge. Can spin the motor freely with my fingers but power to it does nothing. Was running before.

I've always pried the truck side frames from the bottom center
with usually good results. Great video! You're doing a great job!

I have one of those in Santa Fe freight colors. Fairly well detailed. I despise the drive unit on these so I kitbashed it with the chassis of an Athearn GP35. It's a fairly easy conversion. Had to remove the dimples under the shell where hand rail stands attach. Little bit of metal removal from the frame and it goes together very well. Fortunately the GP35 chassis is exactly the right length.
I also did the same with the Tyco Alco Century but I used an Athearn SD9 chassis. It's 6 axle instead of 4 but so what! If someone questions it just give them a back story. (When the Soo Line ordered new GP30s in the early 60s they insisted on Alco trucks under them.)
Both locos run great and will MU easily with other Athearns.
Only important thing is you'll need to use the later narrow Athearn motors. The old wide motors won't fit.

Nice video! I can explain that track nail lmao. I ran that engine probably 2 times, and let it sit on my workbench for a couple weeks. This is probably a sign for me to clean out my bench...

Are the MU2s better then power torque?
Would you have any ideas on how I can replace the traction tires on an Mu2 because mine have crumbled to dust

Good job, but there is a better way to remove the side covers with a razor blade or xacto knife. I love my old Tycos!

Try heating it up with a heat gun to get those truck covers off? Not too much though?

Why don't you just use electronic cleaner, comes in a can, you just spray it down real good and it dries up on its own!!, You can buy anywhere??, So much easier!!
