My Pet Alligator Gar Got a New Tank!

- In this video, I get a new 300 gallon tank for my pet alligator gar, Brazos and the crawfish, Charlie. After I set it up, they enjoy several shad in their new tank. Thank you guys for watching!!
I was so relieved to find out he knows about beneficial bacteria and it’s importance for healthy fish and a good aquarium

@@neo-filthyfrank1347 I assume so. All it would take is a tripod to hold the camera while he does his thing, but as he might not have one, he has to hold the camera instead. I could be wrong and he just doesn't like using tripods, didn't have the proper space to set it up, or is just camera shy and didn't want to show the process. Who's to say? Fun to wonder nonetheless.
@@SmokeyEdits Who knows, it certainly helps the pacing earlier on I just wish he'd shown that one detail. Though I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have a tripod by now if he wanted one.

Yeah, there's one in particular I came across that has like, zero care for their fishes' comfort. Having a channel like this, that you can trust isn't gonna mistreat the animals for views, is healing for my soul.
My favorite part is "Look at Charlie tearin up that shad."
I have to say, I can really tell that if there's anyone qualified to own an alligator gar, it's you dude. The amount of care you put into this was really impressive.
I like the use of tubs as makeshift aquariums, makes for much cheaper housing than having to go for a tank proper and a stand for it.

I was so happy to hear that you have a pond. I can't imagine a fish of that size living in a tank it's whole life. It's the equivalent of a person living inside there house there whole life.

Must be a southern crayfish. They get larger then ours here in Illinois. So cool how Brazos is so calm in the net. I had oscars and every time I moved them and they reached the surface they would drench me.

Is Charlie a type of crayfish? I remember when I had a crayfish I couldn't keep any live plants with them because they would just eat them. Not even something as tough as Anubis could survive a hungry crayfish

I love these gar so much.
I used to work in a taxidermy shop and I had to deal with hundreds more of these bastards than I ever wanted to. You want to talk about a pain in the ass fish to do a skin mount, these guys take the cake.
- They have a hideous amount of slime that they continue to produce posthumously until the skin is isolated from the body. The record puddle size for such slime that I saw was one fish covering about a 15x10sqft area with what is basically a giant slippery booger.
- This slime can build up in clothing to such a point that your shirt will be made water proof and smell like gar, unable to be washed. You either keep using the same shirt or ruin another one. The choice isn't good, but it's yours.
- Every surface of this fish will scratch you, there isn't a smooth spot on these bastards.
- After skinning several of them, the smell sticks to you for days. You will smell like gar, not fish, but gar for about a week, even if only subtly.
- When they dry out, before they are painted, they will make you break out in an allergic reaction on your skin wherever you touch it, aside from the hands. Arms will always break out into little red bumps that itch like crazy and I never found a person who didn't suffer the reaction. Shit was bonkers.
- You have to let them dry and grease out for months in a hot room or they will grease out on the wall and ruin the paintjob. This manifests as a thick, brown, waxy substance building up on the gullet and fins and through the scales in places. This wax smells like gar, and is incredibly noticeable.
- Even when painted and clear coated, there are still several spots on the fish that, despite being smoothed somewhat by the clear coat, will still cut the shit out of you.
I firmly believe that I personally have skinned, and mounted more of these fish than any other single person on Earth and I do not wish that fate on anyone. To this day, almost a decade removed from the closing of the shop, I can still tell you word for word the entire process, start-to-finish, and could probably skin, stuff, and sculpt one of these bastards were I in a coma. It is a fate I wouldn't wish on anyone to have to mount the number of these I've had to do.
