  • Every year I buy and plant more trees to extend my orchard in the high desert of Southern Arizona. This year I bought peach, apricot and cherry trees, and blueberry bushes.
I buy all my trees from treesofantiquity.com/ -- I highly recommend them.
    We have swag! shop.nuweblarehomestead.com/
Nuwe Blare Homestead is a homestead in the Arizona desert. We (try to) grow our own food with our desert garden, we raise chickens and ducks for eggs, and we build the things we need. Homesteading in the harsh Arizona climate is not easy, but we are learning how to use the resources we have at hand to accomplish our goals. We're a South African-American family, so we occasionally share recipes for South African dishes.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I keep on telling people, "it's an investment"

How are you dealing with the soil alkalinity issue for your blueberries? What part of az are you in?

I don't have a set plan yet, but I'm researching what I can do to increase the acidity of the soil. I'm in Cochise County (SE AZ)

@@NuweBlareHomestead if you put them into the ground, it will be hard. the soil will always get the PH of the surrounding area after some time. i ripped mine out and put them into 90L containers after they did bad for over a year and one already died. if your PH isn fitting in the area, better dont try to fight the PH and put them into container. you can also dig those containers in, but good luck in trying to lower the PH just with mulch ect. it wont work :(

@@NuweBlareHomestead Mulch using the pine needles from your tree. As they break down they'll make the soil more acidic.

Thanks Hans, I'll definitely consider that. I'm getting a soil PH meter and some amendments to help acidify the soil, but if things don't look like they're working, I'll probably pull them out as you suggested.

Hi Lori, we don't have any pine trees. We mostly have mesquite, and then also some cottonwoods, and a few other types of trees.
