One of the most insane coasters I've ever ridden! Hell of a ride and very underrated. For those saying the restraint doesn't look very safe, it truly doesn't FEEL very safe while riding. But the ride has never had any major incidents in its 56 years of operating; as long as you don't try anything stupid, you'll be fine.
I agree with you. I grew up around there in the 70s & 80s and rode it quite often. You def don't feel like you're secured in the seat - there's just a thin bar that locks down in front of you.
Not true I know of one fatality my mom told me about ..I'm 64 years old born and raised in Van. as were my parents. I remember couldn't get enough of it in the 60s and 70s..can't take it nowadays definitely a young person ride. Anyway, Mom told me there was a man who on opening day would do a handstand on the last car all the way to the top of the first hill. He should have quite while he was ahead because the last time he fell off and died. I tried to find the story on the net to no evail but mom would not lie. ***just did some surfing and yeah back in 1948 Vancouver's Giant Dipper was demolished. So it was probably in the 30's or 40's and on the old Giant Dipper . trivia source;miss604.com/2011/08/vancouver-history-wooden-coaster.html
Not the fastest, not the tallest but definitely one of the wildest and a truly classic coaster! I live in the Greater Vancouver area so this is my local coaster. I get excited every time!
As of my first time riding this today, it's my absolute new favorite woodie. The air time is beyond belief. There may be other coasters with more extreme forces, but the restraints on this actually let you experience the insanely fun and horrific air time. The front seat has insane air time combined with Scrambler insane laterals. The ejector airs on the back seats is so much fun. So much fun that the damn insurance companies, seat dividers and PTC orange mouse trap bars have not been able to ruin!
yes u r right I went on this yesterday 2 times I mean it was a little scary the first time because I almost flew out and my head hit the back but it is scary and not smooth at all!
when i was like 10 or 11 I went on this ride and i weighed like 110lbs or some shit, they didn’t have the over the shoulder hard plastic protection, it was just a metal bar that tightened on the waist, I almost went flying out of the coaster and my cousin had to pull me down because the momentum caused me to stand up mid drop, was hanging on to that bar with all my life after
This roller coaster is madness. There is crazy airtime all the way through the ride, even the little hills at the end. There are moments best defined as the feeling of desperately fighting to keep yourself in the car. There's a reason they take your picture at the 2nd drop. It's epic - essentially a free fall floating out of the seat with nothing but the lap bar holding you in the ride.
I went here for the first time when I was 10. It was a class field trip. Me being a child who was a bit fearful, thought this would be fun. I was with another girl, who was not too bothered. As we approached the ride, I has second thoughts. I decided to just get on the ride. I was fine. The ride was not starting yet, so you could hear many conversations. 2 friends has a conversation which terrified me. “Hey, have you went on the roller coaster” “Yeah, not a big deal” “Really?” “I mean I hear someone puked on here. Also, I think I heard people have fallen off” (Of course that was fake, it still freaked me out) I went on it, I felt like I had a heart attack. IT WAS STILL SO FUN THOUGH! I WOULD HAVE WENT AGAIN, IF THE LINE WAS NOT SO LONG!!!
i’m a huge roller coaster lover and went one this ride and had a full on anxiety attack half way through cause i thought i was gonna slid out. was shaking for 2 hours after :)
Vancouverite here. I've been riding this thing since the late 80s when I was tall enough to ride, and looking back on it it's no wonder I developed a love for coasters starting with this thing. This ride is VIOLENT. It will throw you around, try to throw you out of the train. In fact, there WAS a fatality on it in the mid 90s when some moron stood up on the ride and was ejected from it. That's why they have signs literally in every car now telling you to remain seated.
It doesn't look like much on video but that coaster is a nasty nasty beast! There is no smooth or boring with this monster like you get with a metal rail ride. Just fast fast with violent jerky drops. Wheoo! First time I ever went on it I was between 5 - 7 years old (in the 70's) with my dad. It was long before seatbelts or height restrictions and let me tell you.. I nearly flew out of the damn thing. I remember my dad just grabbing the back of my shirt and holding on to me for dear life through all the drops. He had a wicked time laughing his head off but i got off sobbing with a face as white as a ghost and nearly puked hahah! Next time we went to playland in the 80s and I was about 11. I dont remember going on it. I probably refused.. then I went as a teen with my cousins and went on it once. It was awesome.. now I just went on it at 51 (august 24th 2022) with my 21 year old son. I guess they just re-opened it after a 1mil dollar restoration. They must have improved it a great deal because I dont remember it being that fast or jerky! Half the time you are practically out of your seat in the air! Excellent ride but you definitley have to hold on to your granny glasses going down those drops. Very badass.
OMG I think Rob took my request. I remember on one of their other videos I suggested to him that he should take his team to this coaster and sure enough, HE DID :-D I love you for that Rob. I'm glad you liked this amazing thing :-) Be sure to ride the Corkscrew Coaster as well. it's the red and white coaster at the back of the park. It looks kind of rough though, but I'm sure it's fun.
I live by Vancouver like an hour or so and even though I have been to six flags magic mountain the best rollercoaster park imo, this is still great! It has great airtime,it can be rough but not for me. I would totally recommend!
aww man I love coasters like this. I sure miss going on them. Looks like you all had so much fun!! I love laughing on coasters, I never screamed I was always laughing. I'm just so happy that you guys keep making videos like this so I can see them and others that have disabilities too that perhaps used to go to theme parks but can't anymore. Thank you x
Very impressive those folks had their hands up the entire time. I’m born and raised in Vancouver and the seat bars on that coaster are very loose fitting. It’s super scary 😂
This video may have been posted when I was a young 8 years old, but this ride is still open and running today! In fact the last 3-4 years this ride has been closed often because playland has gone through great lengths to repair and keep this thing in good condition. Right now they are working on having two car sets run at once to reduce the waiting times, which can be 40-90 minutes depending on how busy it is
I haven't ridden this classic yet, but I have ridden Phoenix at Knoebels, and I have to say, that ride is scary with just the buzz bars and that intense airtime!
Since I live in Canada, I went here yesterday with my class, you literally have to hold on with dear life, you literally stand up and you almost fall out of the cart
an oldie but goodie. Sounds like you enjoyed it. The ladies had fun, too. The coaster is pretty wild but obviously safer than the surf contest they just had in Fiji.
once did a music video in playland in the 80's and we had to ride this coaster 17 times in a row for filming purposes. The train would get to the station and just go right through and back up again 17 times. Everyone was sick by the end, hot models puking haha... but a memorable experience
If you’re a tall person then hold on for your life! This ride pulls you out of your seat and you feel like you’re going to topple frontwards and back. I remember hitting the safety bar so hard after it felt like it flew me off then back again. It was terrifying but it still kept me going back every year!!
this coaster is so much fun. It hurts tho, im short and stand up quite a lot on the coaster during the drops, and the bar slams into ur stomach constantly. That's expected w woodies tho. I rlly recommend it if ur pain tolerance is on the good side!
Yes, nobody died on it @Jaida Tylor, it has never had any accident regarding safety. No deaths have ever occurred on this ride ever since it opened in 1958.
GUYS I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THIS RIDE!! i went on it, ITS AMAZING!! its a mix of horrifying feelings and excitement. its definatly a great roller coaster for those who like a lot of drops. deffo not the most extreme. BUT its the best rollercoaster that is wooden i have ever rode.
Fun fact: This roller coaster is featured in the infamous roller coaster scene in the 1996 steamy psycho teen thriller Fear with Mark Walhberg and Reese Witherspoon
That’s my home city. I always go to PNE almost every week. Honestly I wished u recorded something on the revelation or hellavator instead but one thing I gotta point out: you are actually EXTREMELY forbidden to bring devices on the rides
The "restraints" were actually a lot further from me in person. Lol. Though that maybe just me since I 5 foot 2. Though it's the best damn ride been on. You get a best stages from a ride excited, then regret and then excited again.
The crazy thing to me about this roller coaster is the fact it is here and still being used without issue to this day, but at the same time, there is no way in hell a ride like this could ever be built again. The feel like you could fall out at any drop that this ride is loved for would never be allowed on a newly made ride, it would be full of safety features that ruin that. Enjoy these classics while they are here cause new rides will probably never be the same
This is why I was so worried about the plans to move the PNE to a new site. Even if they moved the coaster (which can definitely be done), someone would probably insist on "fixing" it somehow (e.g. new restraint system or whatever), and the ride would never be the same again.
I went on this ride 4 times. The first time i went i saw that there were no seatbelts, this scared the living crap out of me! Also there were tight turns so my neck hurt for 3 days... ITS AN AWESOME RIDE THO
Once I was on a dragon swing and the lap bar is shared with the row so it was above me. We were the 2nd row back. When we reached max speed I got so much airtime and I’m no GP but I swear I felt like I was about to fall out. It was crazy.
Guys, you almost fall out of the cart. the first 2 drops are huge. on the 2nd drop you get your photos taken if you want to purchase. This ride is so much fun though

was This Coaster Featured In The 90's Movie Called FEAR??????

The last couple minutes of this really SHOW you just how hard this ride ejects you
As of my first time riding this today, it's my absolute new favorite woodie. The air time is beyond belief. 5:37 DAT AIRTIME
I know it is almost dangerous air time they need to install a seatbelt on the back row because of that drop
I was on the back as well and it was INSANE
Is it just me or does the footage of roller coasters always make the drops look less scary than they actually are?
yes
There drops are sooo scary on this one!
Yep
yes u r right I went on this yesterday 2 times I mean it was a little scary the first time because I almost flew out and my head hit the back but it is scary and not smooth at all!
Baljot Mangat I swear i was full on standing i was sooo scared
This is an awesome coaster but you gotta hold on cause every time I go on, the thrill is not to fly out!!!
I always Hold on on any Ride Because trains Lap bars can Malfunction anytime on any Coaster Now GCI and RMC have nothing to hold on to:(
lap bars aren't going to fail they ave the same safety systems as otsr's and there a lot more comfortable and enjoyable than a otsr.
After i went on i had noodle legs i couldn't walk i was so scared ya you have to hold on or weeee off you go.
when i was like 10 or 11 I went on this ride and i weighed like 110lbs or some shit, they didn’t have the over the shoulder hard plastic protection, it was just a metal bar that tightened on the waist, I almost went flying out of the coaster and my cousin had to pull me down because the momentum caused me to stand up mid drop, was hanging on to that bar with all my life after
Natalie C yeah I've been on it and u really have to hang on tight!!! Haha

if you want to be more scared. the ride has no harnes no seatbelt. only a bar. and its about 1 foot away from you
Yep it does
Ikr...rode it...thought i was gonna fall off
But yet in the 60 years of its operation there hasn’t been a single accident
Yep, thats why its one of my least favourites
I couldn’t feel the seat when it was going down the hill.
Guys, she wasn't standing. The only thing 'holding' you in is this bar that is like a foot away from you.
There’s also a seatbelt
I went here for the first time when I was 10. It was a class field trip. Me being a child who was a bit fearful, thought this would be fun. I was with another girl, who was not too bothered. I went on it, I felt like I had a heart attack.
IT WAS STILL SO FUN THOUGH! I WOULD HAVE WENT AGAIN, IF THE LINE WAS NOT SO LONG!!!
I feel like most people don't know that after the first drop, it's just gravity taking you.
What takes you down the first drop, then?
viddork probably the chainlift
It's a lawnmower motor Taking you up the first hill. After you start down it is all gravitational physics keeping it going
5:37- 5:39...thought we were gonna lose her.
Ejector airtime baby!
I spend so many summer days in Playland riding that thing over and over!
5:37 TO SPACEEEE
I just went on it twice today, and I've never ridden a traditional wooden coaster of that size before. Crazy ride!
When I was 5 I went on this.. BALLING MY EYES OUT😂
I love this ride it's probably the best ride at playland in my opinion
When you look at it you think its epic,
When go in line and wait you sorta dont think its epic ,
When you go on . . . EPIC DOESNT EVEN EXPLAIN
It's EPIC , AMAZING, SOOOOO AWESOME NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN
Sadly considering what else the park has to offer that is not saying much 😔
even though canadas wonderland is now my home park and i love it, i miss playland and this classic beast so much. rip my airtime supply
I LOVE THIS ROLLER COASTER!!! I went with my school last year and going next week 2! SOOOO FUN!
I live in Vancouver and goin to that read at PNE. I went on it last year and had to go on myself. It was AWESOME!!! Love PNE so much!
SO sorry! I meant ride
This was my very first roller coaster ride. Never been on one before but loved it
This is defiantly my favourite ride at the PNE
i’m a huge roller coaster lover and went one this ride and had a full on anxiety attack half way through cause i thought i was gonna slid out. was shaking for 2 hours after :)
i rode this and it was flippin insane I totally felt like i was going to fly out of the seat

Who are these crazy people with their hands in the air?! I hold on with both hands and still feel like I’m about to go flying out at full speed
My all-time favorite roller coaster!
Yes!!! Finally a coaster I can say ive been on, its close to home :)
I’m going to playland in a week or so and this is gonna be my first wooden coaster. I’m very excited!
So, how was it?
Did your body float?

i’m on my way there right now and ive been so scared LOL
Since I can’t go in quarantine, I’ll just pretend I’m on the coaster!

Beautifully designed machine ! Those trailered trains trains are great at handling the layout .

This coaster is so crazy! the first drop doesn't look bad but OMG it's SO HIGH AND FAST.
I love Playland's wooden roller
coaster!
How did that girl not fall out
I love that ride!
Liam Ryan what
+Kevin Cheong same
How fast is this ride?
Barc Agreed
Can someone explain to me what this ride feels like?
Best ride ever at playland :D
This is not safe😂i literally stood up during the drops
It is safe, it just doesn’t feel safe, it’s been in production for 60+ years and there has never been an accident 🤨
Guys really underrated ride and way more jumpy than it looks
I love this roller coaster, it was the first one I ever went on. 😀
LET'S GO finally I get a reaction of my home coaster
an oldie but goodie. Sounds like you enjoyed it. The ladies had fun, too. The coaster is pretty wild but obviously safer than the surf contest they just had in Fiji.

coaster looks fun as hell!
There's like nobody there?!!? What time of year did you go? I'm going this summer (I live on the island), any recommended times?
I’m going to the pne next week so excited!!
That was totally a great coaster to watch... WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Oh awesome I'm going this summer. Haven't been to the PNE in years.
Grew up on this ride. Scary af! Will always love it!
If you’re a tall person then hold on for your life! This ride pulls you out of your seat and you feel like you’re going to topple frontwards and back. I remember hitting the safety bar so hard after it felt like it flew me off then back again. It was terrifying but it still kept me going back every year!!
I watched this video over 50 times it really helped me make a 3D model thank you!
Can't you just go on the ride?
+Northtop And Tweetitrivia I've already been on it before. this video helped me a lot tough because there's not many pictures online
+FaZe oh nice
M
Greatest woodie nobody seems to know about.
I've been on this favorite ride ever!!
this coaster is so much fun. It hurts tho, im short and stand up quite a lot on the coaster during the drops, and the bar slams into ur stomach constantly. That's expected w woodies tho. I rlly recommend it if ur pain tolerance is on the good side!
Its insane in the morning when they start oiling the tracks. It goes so much faster and kicks you out so much more
I know this is a dumb comment, but like if you're going there.pne is on right now and I'm going Friday 😊
cassie fraser Me, too! I’m going on a field trip to PNE. :)
I live in Vancouver..the coaster is a national treasure
It's scary when u go from the tiny bug roller coaster to this like omg I was crying on it
I've rode this ride thousands of times and the straight part scares the hell out of me
I'm going tomorrow and my friend is going to make ride this should I ?
Abigail Hunter nah people have died on this
Yes, nobody died on it @Jaida Tylor, it has never had any accident regarding safety. No deaths have ever occurred on this ride ever since it opened in 1958.
I LOVE THIS RIDE SOO MUCH
Same
Reminds me of the Wildcat at Cincinnati's Old Coney Island before the park sold to Kings Island. The new Park in Cincinnati.
Hands-down best ride ever
Who doesn’t like this, it’s great! Not the scariest ride at playland but this is like really fun
Its easy the best
Play land is awesome and I used to love riding on this coaster.
My sisters go on it every time i go there but I am too scared to go on
Proud to have one of the best in my backyard!
This is the FIRST coaster I have ever rode and the bar wasn’t touching my lap it felt like I was gonna fly out😂
I go here every summer, its my favourite ride next to the beast.
Same
Preet Judge what about the Mouse?I know a Guy named Chaney Judge
Is that the roller coaster I seen in Fantasy Rider in Mad Wave Motion Theater. Now that is cool.
Fun fact: This roller coaster is featured in the infamous roller coaster scene in the 1996 steamy psycho teen thriller Fear with Mark Walhberg and Reese Witherspoon
I went on this five times with my best friend and it was so much fun!
at 1:00 you can see the Cranium Shaker from Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3 and Devil's Flight from Final Destination 3.
Yep, they film here. ( It's because it's cheaper here )
That’s my home city. I always go to PNE almost every week. Honestly I wished u recorded something on the revelation or hellavator instead but one thing I gotta point out: you are actually EXTREMELY forbidden to bring devices on the rides
I'm going the day after tomorrow!!! I'm so exited!!! I'm gonna ride dis one
OMG I think I recognize one of the people you rode with as someone from my church! :D
great coaster lots of Dips !!!!
Excellent video!
Thanks for sharing!
The "restraints" were actually a lot further from me in person. Lol. Though that maybe just me since I 5 foot 2. Though it's the best damn ride been on. You get a best stages from a ride excited, then regret and then excited again.
This ride is so cool
It doesn't look scary but it also does idk like how fast is it and are the drops more intense than they look?
NatalieSigns I've been to Disney world, sea world, ext. This is still one of the scariest roller coasters ever, along with being my first.
NatalieSigns the air time, along with only having a bar for protection, makes in super scary.
The crazy thing to me about this roller coaster is the fact it is here and still being used without issue to this day, but at the same time, there is no way in hell a ride like this could ever be built again.

They installed seatbelts this year, doesn't do much tho, i still got pulled out of the seat just the same
I went on this ride 4 times.
That’s crazy airtime !!
Now THAT’S a roller coaster!
I've been on his rollercoaster before it's my favorite
Well, that makes sense: you'd have to ride it at least once before you could make it your favourite.
Guys, you almost fall out of the cart. the first 2 drops are huge. on the 2nd drop you get your photos taken if you want to purchase. This ride is so much fun though
They re-tracked this in 2022 (giving it a Ghost Rider feel) and so it is now faster and smoother.
Just waiting for a classic Robb "oh crap"
