You, Mr. Brown, (and your little brother!) are the best! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and inspiring everyone with your voice on the instrument!
I fucking love you guys so much! Please don't ever stop doing these videos. There will be a huge hole in my life without them, like losing a beloved family member.
I've found that when someone says you shouldn't play bass, or a certain genre, with a pick, you can usually safely ignore anything else they have to say.
Rest aside that one can choose the pick not because its sonic propierties but also a personal handicap. Charles Benavent is a flamenco jazz fusion virtuoso who plays with Paco de Lucia, he plays with a pick because he suffered an accident on his fingers and this way works for him.
Love a bass solo lol. Stanley Clarke doesn't get enough love on your channel. He'd be part of every bass conversation for me but he rarely gets a mention when you're talking about 'the greats'. Love your channel though
I would love a video on Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant. Hes such an underrated and groovy bassists. Check out Free Hand for pure prog perfection. Every bit as good as Chris Squire
I met Rich Brown at one of the Bass Shows (the snowy one in London) and he is one of the sweetest, loveliest, most humble and down to earth people I've ever met. He's also one of the greatest players of all time. His phrasing, articulation, sense of melody, harmony, groove, feel, and tone, are about as good as they get. He's also a brilliant teacher and educational content creator, and has an amazing speaking voice which is as rich (pun intended) as his tone.
I like a good bass solo, but i'm much much more about in the pocket. I love it when a bassplayer and a drummer are completly locked in the pocket Like Gadd and Paladino (with Stevie Wonder) or Nick Campbell and Abe Laboriel jr (with Scary Pockets) I'll die for that. Really love this episode of the Scott and Ian show btw, it's hilarious Please keep on making this awesome TH-cam content please, love you crazy bass nerds!
I’m a metal bassist who LOVES jazz. I believe my love of jazz has been instrumental in developing my own style. Thank you for showing these legends some love and sharing them with us

Dang it this podcast was absolutely fantastic! You guys had me cracking up! When Scott said “I LOVE BASS SOLOS” it reminded me of the scene on SpongeBob when squidward admitted he loved crabby Patty’s and locked himself in the crabby patty vault lmao,
I took a lesson from Gary Willis in the 90s. He talked about having a light touch, it gives you a different sound, but it also gives you a greater dynamic range. You can always play softer, but if you’re really digging in, there’s nowhere to go if you want to get louder.
For those who don't know, that's Alphonse Mouzon ripping it apart on drums accompanying Jaco. Looks like a clip from when they performed with trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff
Have you got a bass? If not join in the fun. I play guitar too but to me, bass is so much more.... satisfying. And slapping a bass is as much fun as you can have with strings.
Ian, did you play on the Verskotzi track "I Don't Believe in Everything...But I Do!"? I just pulled up his music on Spotify and was listening to the latest album and that really jumped out to me as your playing. The use of drive sounded "Ian-ish," as well as the line itself. Love your stuff with Jeremy Messersmith, btw.
I love bass solos. Big grunge fan and tribel tech :-) My favorite bass solo is from Tal Wilkenfeld when she plays with Jeff Beck live at ronnies during Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers. not just the solo, but the interaction/response from Jeff and the audience. Magic!
when reacting to Jaco, you need use 'Port of Entry (live)' from night passage, now that is something to rave about. and from an accompanying pov, refuge of the roads from Hejira - sublime. in fact those two albums in my opinion are peak Jaco.
Billy Gould is known for his bass playing skills and here are some of his greatest bass lines ¹: - *We Care A Lot*: This is one of Billy Gould's most popular bass lines and is considered a classic. - *Epic*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's pick playing and can be easily mistaken for slapping. - *Falling To Pieces Intro*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's fingerstyle playing and has a very catchy melody. - *Falling To Pieces Solo*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's slap playing and has a very funky and upbeat melody. - *Everything’s Ruined*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's ability to play complex and intricate melodies. - *Anne’s Song*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's ability to play beautiful and melodic bass lines. - *Underwater Love*: This bass line is a great example of Billy Gould's ability to play funky and upbeat bass lines.
Your discussion about Evan Marien leading a move up the neck with his ring finger instead of his middle finger helped me realise why, for the last 20 years, people have told me my playing looks like spider fingers.
I will admit I’ve been avoiding the jazz subject videos but now I’m glad I clicked because these bass solos are really beautiful sounding even tho it’s not my thing. I am really considering the course just for the education of it. I would love to be able to play so effectively even if it’s not my preferred genre. Great video, love the bass solo geekery.
I understand that the Jaco sound works great for soloing but the problem you'll come across ... if you really want to be a part of the jazz world, you'll still find lots of musicians (especially acoustic piano players and horn players) that think a bass in jazz should be a double bass... you can do what you like, bring your acoustic "cello"-like bass or buy Steve Swallows Citron and Copy his plectrum playing: to these guys it will never sound enough like a double bass (and of course they do have a point ...) so why bother?! But on the other hand: the Jaco bridge PU thing is as far away as you can get from what these guys like ... Willis is in the same ballpark with his sound (Jaco-like) but I (almost?) never hear him play with acoustic instruments. You see Damian Erskine playing with acoustic piano but he goes for a warmer sound (often with nylon tapewounds and both PU's or one in "P" placing), you see Berlin do it (with a Jaco-like sound) but than most of the time he plays themes and solo's and takes a double bassplayer with him (of course not always!) I like to go back to Monk Montgomery and his P: (and this is not something like "the truth", just my way of trying to deal with things ...) I had the discussion with some traditional players where they don't believe me when I say that certain "Montgomery Brothers" records are played with an electric ... That's something to think about: if you're going for jazz, are you really satisfied, only being called by the fusion guys and maybe some younger guys that care less about the double bass? (I'd like to have as many gigs as possible, even if I'm only third call behind two double bass players! 🙂...) unlucky for me: I have no will at all to play the double, I love the electric! But in first place I'm a jazz guy! (and I happen to play the electric ... I think lots of bass players are in first place Jaco guys and max. in 2nd place playing jazz: nothing wrong with that (!!!) but not easy on yourself if you wanna be a part of the jazz scene)
“The heat, the flies & that incessant jungle drumming. I wish it would stop!” “You wouldn’t want it to stop, very bad things happen when it stops” “Why, what could possibly be worse?” “Bass solo!”

I’m a guitarist not a bassist but I LOVE that i found your channel recently. I’ve got SO much to go back and watch too. Love the humour, the chops. That you love Les Claypool. Amazing ❤❤
So good you guys mentioned Carles Benavent! The man is a legend, thanks to him the bass guitar is part of flamenco. He has played with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia... Hope you guys can make a video about him one day!
Hilarious! 🤣 The most important thing first; Scott, please give details of the Rick in your rack! 😉 Personally, I preferred Janek sonically on the Fodera. And I really don’t like that reverb thing. I’d love to hear him playing with a more immediate sound. Ditto you Scott! 😉🤣I don’t know why so many fusion players seem to feel the need to add reverb when soloing. Re Jaco, I’m with Ian. Jaco’s greatest assets IMO were his groove and time. Obviously his chops were tremendous but his improvised soloing did nothing at all for me. Not because of the shred, but because for me it just lacks flow and coherence. Unlike Steve Swallow (and Carles Benavent). Agree with Ian on Willis too. John Entwistle did not play hard!!!!! FFS!!!! Favourite bass solo? The first one I ever heard, Lemmy on Orgone Accumulator off Hawkwind’s Space Ritual. There are absolutely no fusion chops whatsoever, just a tremendous vibe and sense of dynamic tension. Oh, and Chris Squire’s little break on And You and I.
1st, great rapport as everyone notes. You two help balance each other out on the spectrum 😉 Love me some bass … 30 years deep. There are better instruments to solo and melody on IMO. Jaco is mad both literally and figuratively RIP. 🙏 However, my favorite pieces beyond the Donna Lee revelation on first experience where we come to understand maybe geddy, flea and les aren’t in fact the best bass players in the world, are actually come on come over and the chicken. Now in the orbit of Fred Wesley Maceo Parker’s children’s world is a better example and usage, of melody/solo than any of these clips. Thanks for asking Ian 🫡 We’re all tuned differently though and what resonates with someone resonates. Scott is clearly in love with the stuff 🤷♂️🙌
These guys are great! So inspiring, so much to reach for. Jaco especially. I really can't say I understand the atonal stuff. But please, do a feature on Sam Wilkes. He plays with Louis Cole a lot, and he's just a gigantic monster young bass player. P.S. Short scale basses do look ridiculous on large people! Hell, I saw the late, great Leslie West and he even made his LP look tiny! Great show, though. It was Leslie West/The Ramones/Iggy Pop and I think that Iggy and the Ramones brought out a big cake to Leslie on stage because it was his birthday. It was a great, weird show.
$2200 USD for jazz lab??? WTF? Or I could get 28 hours of private instruction from Todd Johnson (the guy you get a masterclass from in this course). I'm sure all your boomer lawyer fake bass players will have a blast.
As a child of the 90's (born in 1978 like some other fine bass players) we went through the anti shred. Whilst we grew up with Vai & Satch, Gilbert & Sheehan, the grunge movement almost killed off that shred thing. Do'nt get me wrong, I went to see Mr Big last month and fugging loved it but I'm personally not a shredder and because of that, less bothered about it. Show me the groove man!
Whenever I watch a video on bass influences, I feel like I took the wrong path in college. This was the time of Jaco and everyone was into Jaco...except me. Scott, can you give me a low down on this solo: Jeff Berlin - Bruford Tapes - Live at my Father's Place - Travels with Myself and Someone Else. This is a heavy fusion album and has some great solid bass playing for Ian as well but his is what inspired me back then. The solo starts around 2:37 th-cam.com/video/wqYW-IvOISg/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I'm firmly in the Chris Squire camp. His playing - to me - is the perfect cross between melody and rhythm. No one plays like him. If I would need to choose someone from the Jazz camp, it would be Helmut Hattler, whose style was very influencing to me. Not that I'm nearly as good as any one of them. ;)
I play bass since 1972. I never played a bass solo. I will never play a bass solo. And I don't like 99.9% of the solos of other bass players. But to set the record straight: I also don't like excessive solos of other instruments ... maybe except saxes and trombones 😀
Call me Shania Twain when it comes to bass solos. They don't impress me much. I often find them more of than not to be a distraction within a song. Listen to Jason Black's playing on any Hot Water Music song (but particularly Drag My Body) for a prime example of a player who could solo with the best of them but thinks of the song before showing off.
Please don't stop making jokes of short scales or whatever. I liked it very much. There is no overcooking! If I was in Live Class, I would have appeared with my shorty too. Just to extend that joke and laugh together! Both of you are doing great! Just keep on doing what you're doing! 👍
1. A good solo is a good solo, when it's done in context and in the right place. Otherwise it's just self indulgence, (eighties hair metal I'm looking at you!) 2. Scott; we new you were taking the piss at least a little with the short scale hate (especially as you have a shorter than short scale six string), but the reall faux pas was dissing Jack Bruce. You will have to atone for that one.
Watching you guys makes me realise i am normal !!!! There are other crazy bass fanatics out there, So much love for the bass chemistry here you have, please never stop these and also do more of the tracks with no bass that someone has to write parts too !!! ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT
You two never cease to leave me in tears of BOTH laughter and joy! I love your bass nerdery, I don't care about going into the rabbit holes you discovered! One more thing, Evan's playing on Jaco's "Havona" is Quintessence!
Ya ., I don’t like weeding through all of Hadrians noodling to find some musical playing .. he’s fascinating for sure but I don’t feel compelled to waste time trying to like his playing.. Gary Willis is compelling though..
My favourite bass solo comes at 6 minutes and 18 seconds into the song Youth in Asia by Aussie Jazz Fusion band Crossfire. Totally underrated to the point of being virtually unknown. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
Hey guys, what about an interview with Stuart Zender? Scott, you mentioned how big a deal he was to UK players when the first three Jamiroquai albums came out. It’d be great to delve into his playing and gear in depth.

44:50 its not shredding. Its HARMONY AT THAT SPEED. ok its also shredding
I wanted to point out that Evan Marian’s approach to the hexatonic removes the 4 and adds the 7, not a pentatonic with an added 4 as you mention on the breakdown of his style. Not to be a know it all but wanted to mention that since it adds to the unique sound he has!! He’s an incredible player and an incredible person as well!!
Most excellent work as usual ... but you should review your mix ... your voice are way louder than the video you are presenting ... can't listen to them if one does not accept to have your voice screaming in the headphones.
I played both solos in “Teenage Kicks” at last night’s Jam. So yes, I like bass solos. I sang the lead too. But there again I always to try to get to the front of the stage near a mic, so I’m maybe not your archetypal bassist.
Jazz hands! 👐 Do you remember “Jazz Club” from “The Fast Show?” Sums jazz up perfectly. I always say that IMHO the supreme technical ability of jazz players is wasted on an unlistenable form of music.
if you're watching a sport but you don't understand the rules at all: it doesn't do it for you ... same goes for jazz ... if you don't study at least some harmony and some jazz repertoire, it'll all sound like white noise to you ... (there was this period, 40 years ago ... when I was just like that, what made me curious was Brubeck's take 5 ... shouldn't have checked that out, I was happy just as I was ... 🙂 )
18:07 he is amazing. he does a lot of repeating the same notes in different strings in a pattern run. very much like some of the famous jaco licks. this is a short scale bass too.
I'm not crying. There's just something in my eyes.

So good you guys mentioned Carles Benavent! The man is a legend, thanks to him the bass guitar is part of flamenco. He has played with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia... Hope you guys can make a video about him one day!
The drummer with Jaco is Alphonzo Mouzon Great drummer...check him out with Larry Coryell. I love bass solos man.
Hilarious! 🤣
The most important thing first; Scott, please give details of the Rick in your rack! 😉
Personally, I preferred Janek sonically on the Fodera.
You two help balance each other out on the spectrum 😉
Love me some bass … 30 years deep.
Thanks for asking Ian 🫡
We’re all tuned differently though and what resonates with someone resonates. Scott is clearly in love with the stuff 🤷♂️🙌
Ive been playing guitar for the last 16 years and you two are the reason why I want to learn the bass now
These guys are great!
Not that I'm nearly as good as any one of them. ;)
There's a grind to Garry Willis' tone. Pretty cool.
Hey Ian, ask Mr Bass Solo if he wants to have crack at Sinister Minster Part 2! 😊 It blew me away when I first heard it!
😅😅😅
@@devinebass 😜
Otherwise it's just self indulgence, (eighties hair metal I'm looking at you!)
Hate slap bass solos. Seems like all flash and no substance. Caveat to Scott Ambush who I saw do I slap bass solo WITH substance
I always take a solo if they give me one. I still struggle with them, but I go for it anyhow.
I love bass solos
Hey guys, what about an interview with Stuart Zender? Scott, you mentioned how big a deal he was to UK players when the first three Jamiroquai albums came out. It’d be great to delve into his playing and gear in depth.
44:50 its not shredding. Its HARMONY AT THAT SPEED. ok its also shredding
Oh, and I know it’s not electric bass, but for jazz shred, look no further than Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Scarier than a scary thing!
Most bass solos are just too much jazzing off. This video title should be "Rock bassist turned jazz journeyman reacts to Jazz solos".
I played both solos in “Teenage Kicks” at last night’s Jam. So yes, I like bass solos. I sang the lead too. But there again I always to try to get to the front of the stage near a mic, so I’m maybe not your archetypal bassist.
OMG I laughed out loud so many times during this video, especially during Scott’s stories 😂
And …Rich is a monster ….
💯💯💯
It's too bad the musicians with the most knowledge get the smallest crowds.
I'm with Ian. These type of solos are literally so unappealing lol.
Jazz hands! 👐
Do you remember “Jazz Club” from “The Fast Show?”
Sums jazz up perfectly.
Glad i saw this! Was gonna buy a shortscale, was put right off by you, now i've got my confidence back 🤭
where's that Rich Brown gig excerpt from, folks? I'd really love to see that.
That third guy looks like if Bonamassa took care of himself and studied jazz instead of blues.
18:07 he is amazing. he does a lot of repeating the same notes in different strings in a pattern run. very much like some of the famous jaco licks. this is a short scale bass too.
That Supro short scale might be helping Evan with the stretches.
