I learned guitar a bit before I learned bass, and my older brother was sooo into Tool at the time and he was showing me Jambi, those intro string lines, he played it for me and gave it a palm mute for the bass lines and I was in that from then on. That is so awesome to hear of that kind of experience when you're literally a budding musician. No wonder Nick is unbelievable and makes it look sooo effortless!
Had to break it down and do it in segments, but glad I got to watch this whole thing. I've been a fan of Nick's playing since the beginning of the Pomplamoose studio sessions. Glad to see mentioned here the Dua Lipa cover by Scary Pockets; I've lost track of the number of times I've gone back to listen to that monstrous rhythm section groove -- so loose, and yet so tight. At 57:50, Nick is describing the onstage bit where everyone is trying to distract him during the solo, and I was reminded of something from a Flecktones vid from several years back: Victor Wooten talks about (during rehearsal?) doing a band thing where everyone else throws musical curves at Bela to try to get him to make a mistake.
Was not expecting to see Nick here, but so glad you got him. He has such a great sense of how to make a bass line interesting without becoming overbearing. I'm not surprised to hear how thoughtful he is about how he plays. 😎

There's so much information in this video! What a great teacher Nick is! I realize I pluck too hard (learned bass by myself listening to RATM and RHCP... without amp ^^) which then requires the strings to be set with way too much action, which then complicates precision plucking (and makes tapping almost impossible). It also explains why I have so little endurance. But on the other hand, when I pluck just over the higher frets, it sound really like an upright bass! ^^ Keep those kind of videos coming, full of tips from professionals, I love it!

Awesome video. Found the 2 octave diagonal movement scale using 16th notes an awesome idea and have implemented it into my practice already. Opened my eyes to the technique. So easy to understand. It was like I was ripe for that idea to be planted in me. Gonna make a difference to opening up the fretboard, I can tell. A real derrrr / eureka moment 😊

Definitely best to watch these with bass in hand. Great tip with the palm muting pressure, I didn't realise I was choking the sustain so much and was digging in too much to compensate. Playing as lightly as possible is the other tip I needed to hear for sure. I always tend to play too heavy meaning I'm not able to have the action as low as I want so I think focusing on that is going to be a huge leap for my playing.

In response to something Nick says 1:18: 41 Where did the phrasing of Jamerson and Motown come from ?. Hmmm, good question Nick. After much thought, I reconsidered and Michael is the answer. Michael Jackson borrowed melodies from classical music like Beethoven and added them into Jazz rhythm timings, I think reshaping the melodic Jamerson vibe. Michael must have liked them, classical melodies. Play Human Nature on lead, now play Fur Elise slowly and tell me what you hear ?. I hear almost identical melodies, with all different timing. Michael used this a lot and I doubt anyone suspected it. He did in Mama's Pearl, other early songs that influenced Motown. it's that same killer walk backwards melody that Beethoven did, made famous. Moonwalking backwards and Bethooven music feels like moving backwards, so I think Michael was trained on some Beethoven the way he thinks about music or melodies, could be very possible cause his music has the same vibe melodically, but with all new rhythms. Now, our assignment is to combine Classical and Jazz I guess that would be impressive. Just take the melodies of classical, put them into Jazz rhythm or timing and it sounds sort of like a new Michael Jackson song, Thriller or something has more melody than Jazz before that and it came from older music I think, as far as timing Jazz is the best to learn, as far melody it's going to be Classical and back then Jackson was being raised to be a musician and a serious one, probably heard Classical. They forced fed a lot on him, poor kid was forced to learn everything it wasn't nice.
Sometimes i think people like Nick just think 2 times faster then us mere mortals (or it could be just me being a little slow). What an absolute monster!
