Rich did detune his whole instrument. I did a few retreats with his brother David who is also an accomplished hammered dulcimer player and he asked if it was OK to detune my hammered dulcimer because that was how he was used to playing the songs. Nice job!
I also attended some mission trips in New Mexico on some Navajo reservations (I’m seminole) with David mullins. Saw rich perform live with this train a few times and Mitch mcvicker before his passing. They were all incredible individuals that, as an atheist now, I still have so much respect for. David taught me to make a lap dulcimer out of some wood, and cardboard, and taught me to play it. Religion played a huge part in decimating my people, but I still look back on those memories in New Mexico fondly. My name is David also so we always got a kick out of that.
If the only songs I ever master are this, and the intro to Sing Your Praise to the Lord, I will die happy. Thank you SO MUCH for getting me started on that goal!!!
I knew nothing of the hammered dulcimer until I was introduced to Rich as a teen. It has been my dream instrument ever since and I finally got one thirty years later. Now I have some things to learn!
Awesome Joel. Rich was/is my inspiration. Love that guy. If you want more instruction videos, I have online videos here. www.thehdplayer.com If I don’t cover something you want to know, all you have to do is ask. I’ll make a video for it.
Hi Lilian. How very exciting. I know the feeling of finally being able to play a song or at least understand what you're suppose to do. I still have that sometimes too. 😊 Let me know if you have any questions.
Ted Yoder My background is in piano, I'm not getting the note placement yet and chords. But it's way early, if you have a hint or a particular learning video - I'm all ears LOL Peace brother!! Thanks for replying
+Lilian K My background came from piano too. It was definitely a learning curve coming to the hammered dulcimer from piano. There are several books that I've used and sell on my website, www.tedyoder.com, that I would recommend. I also give Skype lessons and I have some lessons for sale you might want to check out. I'm also working on some new lessons which will actually be available on DVD, and TH-cam, hopefully later this summer.
Evart, Michigan is home of the international Dulcimer festival. It's actually going on right now this year, but is not to far of a hike from Toronto. Look it up online and maybe next year stop by. they always have work shops and instructional stuff.
Awesome! Thanks for this. I also have a Master Works dulcimer and have wanted to learn this forever. Thanks for going the speed you're going at! Perfect.
Awesome! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, for listing this song as well! I've seen a couple other instructional videos, but they have simply come up short. I knew that, if anyone could do it, it'd be the T-Man! :) Keep up the great work, and please let me know when you get the rest of the "Creed" instructional videos done. Thank you, and Peace of Christ to you and yours. Your friend and Brother in Christ, Mike
I have never played this put I have watched so many videos and something about the patterning tells me that I will be very good at it. Most instruments are horizontal, this one is vertically arranged AND its strummed. My problem now is that I have no idea where to get this instrument in Toronto. A rental would be a nice or an affordable one that will give me some fully satisfying plays. I guess my question to you is, what should I look for in getting a hammered dulcimer? Thanks
Your tutorials are awesome! I just got a Masterworks hammer dulcimer and I need a little advice on hammers. I'd like to try something heavier than the ones that came with it. I'm a drummer and vibes/marimba player so I feel like I'm playing with twigs... haha. I see the Ed Hale hammers come in round head, and large oval and small oval heads... which would you recommend??? Thanks!
Master Works dulcimers have closer string spacing so the round or small would be better than large. The small head is heavier than the round and cherry shaft is a heavier hammer than poplar. Make sense? 🤪
Hey, I really love watching your videos, and I love Rich Mullins and the hammered dulcimer, but I have no idea where to start in terms of buying one. I can’t spend thousands of dollars on one, and I also want to make sure I can get one that will be capable of playing Rich Mullins’ songs. If you’ve got any tips on what exactly a beginning dulcimer player should get, it would be much appreciated. Peace.
Hey Evan, sure I can point you in the right direction. There’s a friend of mine who builds pretty inexpensive dulcimers out in Iowa. www.songbirdhd.com I would suggest the Phoebe chromatic. If you can afford the bigger model Warbler, do that but the Phoebe is a great way to start. You get a lot of notes for the price.
Ted Yoder Thanks man, I play guitar and piano, but the hammered dulcimer really intrigues me right now in a way they haven’t, so I’m excited to look into it more
Yes they are. Those are my favorite hammers hands down. I love the weight and feel and I've used them for most of my HD playing days. I've tried others and enjoy the change but I always come back to Hale. :)
It’s takes time. I sang and played the piano and so did Rich. So that helps. Once you memorize the music, you can forget it and concentrate on the lyric.

Oh that’s cool. Thank you.

Just found this! Sweet!

I just got a hammered dulcimer 3 weeks ago, I really wanted to play Rich Mullins. Today I was able to follow you!
You have no idea how happy I am!

Ted Coder I
Going to learn this one for a church band I usually play keyboard in.
Could you add a picture of the tuning chart you show with Rich’s changes? I’ve wanted to learn to play this forever, and finally have a dulcimer.

Great instruction. I wish i had a hammered dulcimer.

You're welcome Andrew. Please let me know if you have questions or need anything else.
Thanks Ted, I will be coming back to this!

What note would you start if you have a 12/11 dulcimer?

Ted Yoder yes! Thanks so much. That helps a ton!
Unfortunately someone just bought my last pair. He’s working on more for me so I should have some in a week or so.

are those Ed Hale hammers you are using? Funny, I play MasterWorks dulcimer and only use Ed Hale hammers.

I don’t get how Rich can play this and sing at the same time?
