Watching this I am more enamoured to than ever with this wonderful instrument and absolutely convinced I will never be able to play it. Feels like I should have seen two dozen lessons before this “ lesson #1” !
You're just intimidated, but it's not that difficult. Check out Brett Ridgeway's videos. He has some good beginner stuff. Also Dickinson dulcimer. Keep at it, it's worth it 😉
Thank you so much for posting lessons online! It is tough to find an in-person instructor where I live. I've listened to you play for a couple years, and I am always so impressed. So to find you here showing me how to use my hammered dulcimer from the beginning is a gem! I have a great dulcimer, now I can make it come alive with your help. Thank you so much. Julie
These videos are great and super helpful! I had never played a HD, but got the bug about 2 months ago after watching some videos online. I bought my first one last week with a 2.5 hour trip to Master Works in OK. Love it and I'm hoping that I can keep practicing longer than I keep most of my other commitments. Great work, Ted!
Thank you sir and welcome to the hammered dulcimer world. I may have told you this already but I have online lessons at www.thehdplayer.com It’s all the lessons you can consume for just $47/month.
I just finished this lesson. I wish that you had lesson 2 on TH-cam. I enjoyed the lesson, right now, free youtube lessons are all I can do right now. Thanks.
When I made these, I recorded them live and the video wasn’t working well that day. So lesson two got scrapped. I’m sorry. Maybe I’ll make more this year just to give some lessons away.
Hi Ted, I just finished my second lesson. I am really impressed by how clear and easy to follow your lesson is, yet it is very challenging. I have taken lessons for 2 years and am on my own to find my own voice in my dulcimer. The lesson I just went through really helps me see different possibilities in playing my music. It's a terrific exercise for the brain and using both the left and right hand alternately. Thanks so much and on to lesson 3 after I get this one down. . J.
Just getting my first HD, and found this very helpful, even tho it's still being built lol , I play bouzouki, mandolin, lap steel, guitar, can't wait to get into HD mode 😀
Thank you. I just released a series of video lessons on Patreon and I plan to do more along with other perks. Come check it out at www.tedyoder.com/lessons
Any other suggestions that are a slower progression. I can’t add steps in this quickly. Maybe I moved to lesson 2 two soon also where can I find more markers to put on the board?
Thanks Ted. Inspired. I was raised on the accordion from father but this is what I've wanted for the last 20 years. Any suggestions for a beginner instrument? Thanks for the video.
Very similar. Probably the easiest way to explain it would be the cimbalom is chromatic pretty much all the way up from the lowest note to the highest. The hammered dulcimer has more of an open tuning, mostly chromatic. You’d probably have to look at tuning charts to really understand the differences.
Guess I need to buy a book and learn all my scales first because you blow right through them to the exercises. I done know where the keys are even at yet
Love these lessons thank you ! I inherited an HD from my gma and do Live looping fusion with it! Very excited to implement these skills ❤ !! Was a little confused at first because this is lesson 2 Ya ? Why titled #1?
I’d love to hear what you do. Do you have music anywhere to listen to? Not sure what to tell you about the lesson number. I made this so long ago and probably moved things around it said the wrong thing.
The exact one I have is quite expensive but they have some smaller models that are less. Email me at ted@tedyoder.com and I’ll chat with you more about your price range and such.
hello Ted Yoder I just introduced you to my wife and my mother-in-law who did not know you yet and do you know what they loved your music you have two new fans to your credit I would like to know how many albums you have made and what is their name surely that we will place an order for you I am waiting for your news my friend the most sincere greetings to you and your family.
If you’re meaning how the notes are laid out, you can find tuning charts on google quicker than I could explain it. If you’re asking how are they tuned physically. It’s the same. Tuning pins on the sides of the instrument and you use a tuning wrench similar to a piano but smaller in size.
That takes time Jessica but not unobtainable. If you ever want to email me with questions, you can reach me at ted@thehdplayer.com. I’m always glad to help.
My favorite song, played on a hammer dulcimer; "Simple Gifts". It's an old Shaker tune.
After a few years I've decided I want the hammered dulcimer.
Skyrim and The Witcher 3 played a part in me making this decision.
Such a rich instrument
It’ll change your life. 😊
Thanks for these free lessons!

The ‘5th Jam’ is the BEST practice! Thanks for posting this, where can I get more like this?
Hi!, nice tutorials. What are the main differences between the dulcimer and a Santur?. Thks
Tuning mostly. The santoor has quite a few quarter tones where the hammered dulcimer is based on the western chromatic scale.

What brand is your Instrument..How much does it cost? as I want to buy the same

This is actually a Romanian Instroment called a țambal
I thought the Romanian version was the cymbalom.

Do you get my question?
Lesson 1 Hammer dulcimer
What metronome app is that?
I believe it’s called metronome
i look up the history 0f this it trace back t0 900 ad
Yep it's a very old instrument. Almost every country has a version of this just called or tuned differently.
And someone just trying to learn how do we know what chord is each string?
That takes time Jessica but not unobtainable. If you ever want to email me with questions, you can reach me at ted@thehdplayer.com. I’m always glad to help.
Too fast. You don’t show the scales at all
I feel like you assume way too much and trying to introduce this instrument anyone
🤷♂️ not sure how to respond to your statement.
