Philippines was hard done by the US that's why the US-Ph past connection is almost never brought to the surface. They left Ph hanging similar to what they did to Afghanistan. There's a video floating around TH-cam which discusses how the Mexican-Philippines-Hawaii treatment of the US unfolded in the early 1900s. Hawaii obviously, became a US State but the other two ended up as their own sovereign nations.

Lol this made me chuckle. One of the few good things about the Spanish colonialization was how the galleon trade introduced Mexican ingredients to our shore.

People seem to think that they’re just paying lip service when they say that Fanta pairs well with Filipino food, but they’re actually right. Most Filipinos eat filipino foods with softdrinks and cola, that’s like a staple in a lot of meals and parties.

It’s funny how Canada (especially toronto) is such a melting pot. I’m Jamaican Canadian and my best friend since I was a kid is Filipino, so I been eating all these foods since I was a kid. Tacino, Pancit, Lechon, lumpia and adobo just to name a few of my favourites🤷🏾♂️

I am from a small town in Alberta and so so much of the population was Filipino or mixed Filipino, which meant my friends and I would trade lunches that the non first gen or non fob kids thought was weird with my Filipino friends and it was like a buffet of Pancit, Lumpia, Adobo, and various other delicious foods
Ahhh as soon as my Filipino aunt joined the family and we got lumpia for every gathering, life got a lot better around the holidays tbh. Me and my sister are picky eaters and we just silently corner around the lumpia and eat way too much. And ADOBOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh yeah, 100%. My local Chinese restaurant has Chinese-Filipino lumpia fusions and let me tell you I could eat those until I explode.

I feel like Fanta/they’re exploiting the Philippines’s ardent support for them by emphasizing Fanta as a 5/5 pairing with their dishes. Impressionable fans might buy into this like other countries the US has poisoned/exploited with soda. (Mexico)

I do really appreciate how they're eating chicken feet, blood sausage other unfamiliar foods and not one person says "ew" or anything demeaning the cultures food
I don't think many people realize this but both Filipino and Mexican cuisine are heavily influenced by Spanish cuisine since they were both once colonies of the said country. Like, we have lechon and mexico has lechon too as well as what we call chicharon, which is fried dried pork rinds. That being said, it's i think one of the main and important factors why filipino and mexican food work together perfectly

not only that but mexico and the Philippines actually had a very active economic and cultural trade during the period of spanish colonialism; the governing seat of the philippines was literally in mexico city, not spain, for quite a while. Asian ingredients are used in mexico partially because of this legacy (like chile de arbol, which is descended from asian birds eye chilis), and the Philippines uses a lot of mexican ingredients, like annatto, because of this.
@@ThingsWeSaidToday I knew that the Philippines was being run by a governor-general instead of the king itself but I never knew that the said person would be in mexico. thats a cool fact! i also knew about trading since it was really a common factor in colonialism but didn't know abt the specific goods.

I think it’s also fascinating to acknowledge it’s not just Spanish influencing the food with what they brought but it’s what the colonized people do when influenced. I know so many desserts in Spanish colonized places that use up a lot of egg yolks because the Spain’s missionaries would want the egg whites to mix the mortar for their Mission buildings and churches and you can’t let good egg yolk eating go to waste.

The Philippines is a melting pot before the Spaniards, Japanese, or the Americans colonized us. The country is the center of trade back then.
Actually, the Philippines being a melting pot is not really about "colonialism" or us being subjected by Western Empires, but more on "trade" between civilizations, including Spain. Colonialism was just a small part of what makes us a "melting pot"" of cultures and cuisines. The Philippines being the center of Southeast Asia, has been a trading stop for both India, China, and Southeast Asian kingdoms at that time so the fusion was already there before the Spanish have arrived. Also, the waves of Chinese migrants in the 19th and 20th centuries also contributed to the more newer "Chinese" influence in our cuisine, such as the "siopao" and the "siomai" dimsum dishes that got Filipinized over time.
No. Their food has always been something unique. They were colonized by the Spanish, but they take inspiration from a lot of things.
@@justherefor Yeah, and we had our own letters and words and even government, and traded a lot with the Chinese, Malays, Arabs, and other surrounding countries. The Philippines were also really rich with gold before we got colonized, since according to Magellan’s notes there were so much gold used for the decorations and houses.

When the lady said they struggle with either being Filipino or American enough, I felt that. I'm Hispanic and I worry if I am Hispanic enough or American enoguh. I thought I was the only one to struggle with that and I am glad I'm not. We will get there, we are who we are.

Nope, definitely not a unique feeling. Sometimes I think the first trauma inflicted on a child of immigrants is being born and raised in a country whose culture is different from their family. No matter how adjusted you are, you end up going through these self identity issues at some point at your life. I appreciate my parents for trying to provide a better future for their children but at the same time, I resent them for not realizing the toll it would take on their children being raised with a culture that is so different from the one they are living in.
Honestly !! I've always felt that I needed to be more grateful that I was privileged enough to be born in a safe town with accessible education (here in the US..) But I've always wondered what it'd be like if I was raised back in Myanmar. It's hard to connect with both sides sometimes, it causes kind of an existential crisis early on. I applaud u for commenting on it as well !!

I love what Christine said about how Filipino Americans are caught in the crossroads of being Filipino or American enough, but to embrace both cultures which is shown with their food. I myself have a hard time trying to figure out who I am since I'm a Filipino American, so hearing that gave me some justification and knowing just to be yourself and take in fully!

I love how they tried the ihaw or street grilling and got the porks blood. I'm half Cambodian and half Filipino so I grew up eating both types of cuisine from both countries.

They’re exploiting famously nice Filipino fans’ support by emphasizing Fanta as a perfect match. The US screwed over Mexico (skyrocketing obesity and diabetes over ghastly trade deals) + other countries with soda and now they’re capitalizing on the Philippines.

As a Filipino I never knew we had our own town in LA. You always hear of Little Italy, Chinatown, and Koreantown but never Filipinotown. I have to visit these spots in LA now.

I personally have Filipino parentage and love try guys, couldn't stop smiling watching this video. It was almost surreal to see my childhood foods featuring on a try guys video! Great content as usual
Being a Mexican person living in Mexico, I've never had access to foods from around the world. We don't really do diversity here, unfortunately, at least not like in the US. So it was baffling to see just HOW similar our cuisine is to Filipino cuisine. I DEFINITELY have to try it if I ever get the chance!

Have you ever heard of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade? If not, I suggest you look it up. During Spanish colonial times, there was cultural exchange and influence happening directly between Mexico and the Philippines, broadening what similarities we have beyond the shared experience of Spanish colonization. Also, apparently many of the Filipino men on board jumped ship and settled in Mexico, so there are Mexicans from that area with Filipino lineage. I am Filipino American from California, and I always love learning about the similarities between Filipino culture and Mexican culture with my Mexican friends. We are very much primas/primos/mga pinsan!
You can try eating filipino food by cooking with filipino recipes. I suggest Sisig and Adobo. or a breakfast like Tapsilog.
Hehe the similarities does not end at mechado, adobo, tsokolate, and even banana leaf based desserts. Culture, religion, vicks vapor rub, our mothers throwing slippers like shurikens and ofcourse us being family oriented literally makes us relatives 😂

It warms my heart seeing that lady give them Fanta in a bag. Before my grandma immigrated to the states, she and her family used to sell soda in a bag to recycle the cans for money. Now, she sews on occasion and parties way too much lol
I'm from Honduras and we do this too. Made my heart warm. Pulperias are like mini Market and they sell soda like this unless you ask for the bottle

I'm a Filipino planning to move to LA next year, and I'm honestly terrified. Finding out that there's a Filipinotown in LA is really comforting and assuages some of my terror.
Filipinotown is pretty small, but there's a TON of Filipinos all around LA. You'll be fine!
There is an issue of gentrification going on in HiFi, but the food is great and you can find a lot of homelike things. There is a seafood city and jolibee, along with other mom and pop shops
Im a Filipino from Canada who went yo visit LA 4 years ago. And yes no worries. Lots of Filipinos there! Ayos!
Just a tip, don't eat there immediately after settling but when you're really homesick and miss the taste because they won't taste "authentic" when you're still used to our dishes like they taste filipino but really weird. They'll taste great and nostalgic once you get used to LA's food

Ask the the staff of a Filipino restaurant what condiment or dipping sauce goes well with the dish you ordered.
Next, learn how to (1) eat with your hand (usually just one hand) while using the other hand for your drink, serving spoons, and plate; (2) how to use a paired spoon and fork to spear and slice food chunks or to load grains and mushy food on to your spoon. No need for a knife.

the food you guys grilled are called "inihaw"! my personal favorites are isaw (chicken intestines) and tenga ng baboy (pork ears) :D altho i think it would be hard to get there, u should try it out when u have the chance!
