As a fan of this channel for years, this is a welcomed surprise (despite the gruesome information). Please continue with this more thoughtful style.

    • @falicatena
      @falicatena ปีที่แล้ว

      She probably wasn't put on, because there's zero evidence she actually killed anybody, let alone 650 people. The only evidence was contradictory testimonies, and people claiming she wrote all the victims names in a diary, that was never found. Historians believe that the reason these rumors were spread, was politically motivated, and King Mathias II started the rumors. Since he needed her land, and didn't want to pay the debt he owed her from when her husband was alive. Her being denied the ability to defend herself in court, and again the only "evidence" bring rumors helped form that theory. As well as the fact that the king called for the death penalty, which would ended in him getting her land, and not having to pay his debts. The stories about her alleged crimes weren't even written down, until a century after her death. So that makes the information even more unreliable. It's a very interesting case

    As much as these serial killers are repugnant, and I certainly DON'T condone their actions, I find more disturbing the conditions that made them that way in the first place, a lot which have been addressed openly and still have yet to be mended.
    Pedro Lopez's life was most horrifying, as I read in Charlotte Grieg's 2016 book EVIL SERIAL KILLERS. He was born in Tolina, Columbia, 1949, the seventh of 13 children to a tyrannical prostitute mother, during "La Violencia", a period of brutal lawlessness and civil war. His mother threw him out to the streets when he was only eight; he would later go on to blame her for everything that was to follow. The first person who took him in was a paedophile posing publicly as a Good Samaritan, who molested Lopez before throwing him out into the streets. After enduring a year of hiding in abandoned buildings and scavenging for food, he was sent to a local school for orphans in Bogota by an American couple who discovered him during his struggle to survive, only to get kicked out because of a teacher there making sexual advances on him.
    During his mid-teens he resorted to theft, working his way up to car theft. He was eighteen when first arrested by police and gang-raped by four of the inmates. This was what would spark his killing spree; he turned the tables by killing three of his attackers with a homemade knife he constructed, an act that extended his prison sentence by two years, due to the fact that the prison authorities cared not for the well-being of the inmates. When released in 1978, he had fully developed a grudge against women in particular and society in general, and his reign of terror began.
    The authorities acknowledged that there was an increase in missing girls from the Andes south to Peru, but they misattributed the disappearance of the girls Lopez killed to slave traders (most of the victims were from indigenous tribes). And it got worse; when he was caught by Ayachuco Indians who were initially going to bury him alive, an American missionary persuaded them to hand him over to the authorities, who simply deported him to Ecuador. This only resulted in a longer killing spree, as Lopez developed a "peculiar enthusiasm for Ecuadorian girls... much more innocent and trusting than Columbians" (Grieg 92), while also sneaking back and forth from Columbia to Ecuador unnoticed and with impunity. Caught by police in Ambato in 1980 after one woman caught him trying to abduct her daughter - a few days after a flash flood exposed four of his victims' bodies in the same region - Lopez eventually made his confessions in prison that lasted for a day (to a visiting priest who asked to be released from prison, as he couldn't listen to any more of Lopez's horrific accounts) that eventually resulted in his giving tours to the police (in leg irons) to the burial sites, one alone which contained the bodies of 53 girls. This was enough to convince the authorities to have him sentenced to life imprisonment.
    Serial killers like Pedro Lopez are not just proof of how far a person can go to commit such crimes, but is also a prime example of how bad conditions like poor parenting, poverty, unpunished child molesters hiding in plain sight and incompetent authoritative institutions result in creating both monsters and monstrous acts in society. We may openly condemn these crimes and the criminals who commit them, but the real crimes are those that allow monsters like Lopez to be created, and if we don't work harder to fix these problems (familial, societal, political, etc.), more monsters are going to emerge that will continue to scar future generations.

      To be honest I didn't read it all only because I had watch a podcast on him and knew his tragic backstory. And a lot of other serial killers on said podcast a good 80% of them extremely shitty upbringings abuse whether it be mentally sexually emotionally physically or any of the combination while they're in childhood. The system that was there to protect them did not do what they were supposed to do or there was not enough evidence to support further investigation. When it comes to nature versus nurture I believe it's a combination of both but more of nurture over nature. If you grew up where there's consonant abuse in a young mind that gets implanted as something that is normal and when you become school age to damage has more or less already been done

    Harold shipman: one other doctor suspected something wasn’t right (she worked at a nearby gp surgery and noticed that he had far more cremation certificates than expected for a practice his size. You need two doctors to sign the certificate and as he was the only doctor at his practice, her practice’s doctors would sign his patient’s).
    Then a taxi driver raised his suspicions. He took a lot of people to hospital regularly and felt far more of shipman’s patients died suddenly when they’d been relatively well. Again, looked at but not enough evidence to suggest foul play.
    What got him caught was the caught was the forged will. It excluded Kathleen Grundy’s (the victim) family and everything was to go to shipman, for “his service” to the community. Reported to the police, the body was exhumed and examined. The forged will had stated Kathleen wanted cremated so shipman wanted to get rid of evidence. Her body contained diamorphine which she didn’t need or take. Further investigation showed shipman had retrospectively altered computer records.
    He ultimately got charged and convicted of 15 murders. It was decided not to proceed with other charges after his conviction as the publicity from the first trial was so great a fair hearing would not be possible, but mainly that as he had a whole life sentence, there would be no additional punishment added. Shipman hanged himself in prison.
    The inquiry into shipman’s case established he killed 250 people, but likely there were more. The 218 is from part 5 of the inquiry. The later part 6 which looked further back in his career increased it to 250
