  • For this episode, we try something many of you have done yourselves: talk democratic socialism with our parents. We tune into to Bernie's big speech on democratic socialism from last week. And Briahna talks with Howard University's Dr. Greg Carr about the ways that democratic socialism and African American history are deeply intertwined.

This man needs to be elected president so that he can LEAD.
He has the strongest, most conscious, most loving vision for the next stage of America's evolution and he has the experience and balls to actualize it. Don't take such a rare leader for granted. After he's gone, there won't be another like him for a generation. He is a leader 40 years ahead of his time. Within 50 years, all of his plans will become the taken-for-granted norm regardless of whether he wins the Presidency or not.

I got SSDI very young and gained access to Medicare. I went from paying for meds one week at a time when my dr didn’t have samples, paying for meds instead of buying food, to having my meds covered. I didn’t have to find Drs who were willing to give a sliding scale. Didn’t have to work under the table bc living under the poverty line meant I made to much $ to get assistance. I fought getting social security, I didn’t want it. I needed to prove that I could live a normal life. But I was worn down by this horrific for profit medical system. Finally after years of intermittent pain an accident put me in constant horrific pain. The kind of pain that makes you want to kill yourself for relief. I was able to get the surgery I needed, PT and pain mgmt. But as important as all that was I was able to actually raise my baby myself after an unexpected pregnancy. It was hard, I had no $, lived in a 1br efficiency with a mattress, a table, a chair and one lamp I carried from room to room. My baby slept next to me and I fed her my breast milk. But I felt free. I was dirt poor but medical bills didn’t hang over my head. Borderline evil bill collectors calling to collect on old hospital bills, didn’t harass me and threaten me. But here’s a perfect example of how much better govt insurance is then private. When I first got SSI I was so poor I also qualified for Medicaid which covered what Medicare didn’t. They paid for my prescriptions. When Bush passed Medicare part D, Medicaid no longer covered those prescriptions, instead a private insurance company did. It was night and day. Before pretty much whatever my dr prescribed, Medicaid paid for. If they didn’t pay for something they always had an alternative. Private insurance was filled with rejections as route followed by appeals which were always approved (kinda like they wanted to see if my dr really wanted me on the drug), to prior authorizations that took days and required my dr to fax back and forth multiple times. Crazy stupid things like pill limits. They’d pay for 60mg of a drug in one pill (so thirty 60 mg pills) but not sixty 30 mg pills. Even though my Dr wanted me to take one 30 in the am and one 30 in the evening. To suddenly cutting how many actual pills I could receive even though the pharmaceutical company no longer made a strength that made that work. They told me to get the 120mg pill and when they were told the drug maker no longer made 120mg pills, they said there was nothing they could do. And understand this was for Cymbalta, the most god awful drug to try and get off of or lower your dose. Like literally ex heroin addicts have said they’d quit heroin and other drugs but it was nothing like getting off cymbalta. So I was forced to cut my med in half immediately. Thank god my dr gave me samples to help me through bc even with the extra time it was horrible. Antidepressant withdrawal is hell. Cymvlta takes that antidepressant withdrawal and puts it on hellish steroids. Another example is when I was a kid. My mom’s private insurance decided in the middle of a hospitalization that they wouldn’t pay for my stay any longer. My mom’s lover had excellent govt insurance but bc gay marriage wasn’t legal yet, she couldn’t access it. She came very close to giving up parental rights of me and letting my step mom adopt me. Which put me at risk for my dad swooping in and taking custody of me even though he had protective orders put on his children and was known to be an alcoholic, wife beater and child abuser. Bc you know, a cis straight Christian child abuser is better then a heathen dyke.
Bc I’m younger then most ppl on Medicare I have a lot of friends how don’t have access. They struggle in ways I don’t. Friend who make more money then me yet have less bc of for profit insurance. My kids dad doesn’t have insurance and can’t pay for it either. In order to qualify for help he’d have to cut his hours back so far he wouldn’t be able to even rent a room in a crack house. It’s insane. M4A is freedom. It’s like taking an oppressive weight off your chest. It’s clouds clearing, revealing a bright and hopeful new day. (Although personally I prefer gloomy, rainy days but I’m weird. Also that’s such a cheesy analogy but it’s hard to explain how it feels to me relieved of medical debt, lack of insurance or trying to pay for it; and all the stress that comes from their nickel and dimeimg you. )

@@PoliticalEconomy101 I think Bernie's long term goal is genuine democratic socialism and not some half-assed social democracy. He wants to start with such reforms as socialized healthcare, a federal jobs guarantee, a federal housing guarantee, and a complete elimination of the billionaire class through purposeful taxes. Those are serious steps forward. Redistributing the means of production is the second phase that will probably be left to those that will follow in Bernie's footsteps. (Remember: "It's not me [Sanders]. It's us.") The key is that, in my opinion, Bernie wishes to get there through reform instead of a violent revolution. www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-reform-and-revolution/ Bernie is a dove, after all.

This was interesting, hearing the discussion between a daughter and her dad.
The dad needs to see that our current system of the private sector controlling almost every aspect of our life is not working for workers, the ill, the poor and the elderly. Corporations are only concerned about quarterly profit, so they will rip off consumers, workers and the environment.
The dad’s idea that we have to change individually is a bit unrealistic because the very wealthy who own so many assets, are not going to turn over a new leaf. We need protection from the powerful.

In order to form a more perfect union, Establish Justice, Insure Domestic Tranquility, Provide For the Common Defense, Promote The General Welfare..
Seems like Defense has been over attended (to the point where we now are on Offense), but Promoting the General Welfare doesn't get much of a checkup lately.

I'm an American descendant of slaves of capitalist America which kept my ancestors oppressed legally until the late twentieth century; but that doesnt mean capitalism automatically must engage in racial slavery to function. Likewise, socialism does not require rightwing dictatorships and oppression seen in North Korea or the Soviet Union to exist. This is a strawman argument we need to debunk.

I understand where Mr. Marquez is coming from, that putting all that hope and responsibility on government is "risky" and they may not work hard enough or not be good enough (quality wise) compared to private sector. And if you get a horrible government, you're screwed for sure because there's no other option.
But I think what Bernie believes and is fighting for is for government to actually do what they're supposed to (in a democratic society) which is to work for the benefit of the people - not just for profit, for big companies, rich people, for imperialism, and power game. It is as "simple" as that. He wants to fight the corruption and change the system that's made the government so useless or even against the public interest, public good.
I mean if a country is to have a democratically elected government, why can't the people demand the government to work for them, like they're supposed to. We need to put them to work for us, if not then why have a government at all. Might as well live in an anarchy.

I'm an Australian who avidly follows US political news every day. I subscribe to TYT and where I live, they come on live at 6am and I'm watching everyday without fail. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that the despair that I here from the people struggling to survive day-to-day in your country, is mirrored by an international despair at the total breakdown in US political "integrity". It is disheartening to see, everyday, your government representatives adopting partisan, corporate and self-serving priorities as the virtues they cling to rather than the virtues that are supposed to accompany "public service"! Despite the fact that I am an atheist, I "pray" that Bernie finds a path that delivers him to the oval office in 2021. The world is watching you, and as sad as it is to say this, many nations are only too happy to follow your example. You need to elect a president who will bring back a sense of pride in the kinds of virtues that our grandparents used to instill in their kids. Respect for your parents, teachers, and authorities. To take ownership of your decisions, and to have the strength of character to do what's right, especially when it's hard.

Not books but two projects to look into. Peter Joseph's Zeitgeist movement and Jacque Fresco's Venus Project.
Both have documentaries here on youtube. Both suggest a sharing economy to both address the climate crisis and human destruction of the natural world, and to facilitate open access to literally everything for everyone.
The ultimate goal being to evolve beyond the monetary system that enslaves us, to live sustainably in harmony with the natural world, with emphasis on individuality and quality of life for everyone. The robots do all the work. We do and work on/at whatever we want to improve the world for everyone.
How we get there I think will likely take a catalyzing event. Here's my musing; Bernie takes office just a the global financial bubblefest pops and some serious climate related event occurs like heatwaves that quickly kill thousands globally.
Bernie could easily be the leader to bring together and justly lead all humanity into a livable future.

I don't understand how people have more confidence in the private sector (whose main qualifications are their ability to finance corporations & institutions), to make decisions for us, concerning our schools, work environment, wages, medical needs, & infrastructure etc; instead of the government that we pay our taxes to & who we are supposed to elect and control??????????

I like Bernie a lot. That being said, I've never heard him say that he thinks the working class should have ownership and control of the means of production. Because this has not been said or demonstrated, I really think he is a social democrat not a democratic socialist. I know it seems nitpicky, but there is a HUGE difference.

Briahna when discussing the congress' low approval rating you were almost at the exact point this man needed to hear to change his mind, imo. You brought up corrupting power of money in politics and confirmed his thought that congress is not popular. BUT I think you should have gone a step further and brought up the 2014 survey that showed exactly how little congress responds to the will of the people vs. the elite.

More watered down politics and opinion. I guess the only reason Bernie has these girls are because they are millennials. The are way to ignorant to be arguing about socialism. Its obvious they dont know enough about the subject to be arguing about it. Politics is not religion where you can just have your opinion and be right. Politics requires specialists who have PHDs or special knowledge something that take years of training. Someone adept at state socialism could counter all of Gregs concerns effectively.
