All of those approaches to getting through to MAGA victims are smart. But, even if you can avoid, “speaking down,” to them, you have to keep in mind that you’re likely dealing with someone of a much lower IQ than you. That’s not a jibe, or a quip. It is the GOP strategy. It runs all the way back to McNamara’s Morons from the Vietnam War, and a branch of very deliberate exploitation of those who feel left behind, who are mostly people of lower thinking ability.

Absolutely. The people who raised us instilled in us values that they never actually possessed themselves. Somehow they were able to do enough lip service to the “right thing” that we picked up on it and internalized the actual goodness. I was so surprised to realize that when my family went off the deep end for Trump. I got married in Oct 2016 and had an awesome family honeymoon (my parents, my daughter from my first marriage, his parents and my aunt and her s.o. all went on a cruise together after we got married on the ship) and I’m still angry that one of my most vivid memories of the honeymoon is my dad *screaming* at the taxi driver in Nassau about how he would rather have a “strong” president like Trump and Putin than a Democrat. They’re still in the cult.

Oh yeah it was pretty easy to get rid of them though because it was just the latest in a long line of stupid choices. Like the uncle who got scammed out of everything he owned by MLMs on 4 separate occasions, who then got just as hooked on the Trump cult and surprise surprise, lost everything there too. Didn't even go to his funeral. Just stopped by his grave when I was in town the year after so I could take a leak before getting on the highway.

Lately, they have really alarmed me with their conspiracy theories and specious lies as never before. I worked with the insane for years, and they remind me of those pitiful patients. Flights of fancy and delusions of grandeur are very common among them. If they were confinded to an institution, I would feel sorry for them. Unfortunately, they run wild and loose in this country! Maybe it wasn't a great idea to close down the psychiatric centers en masses because the Republicans didn't want to pay for their care anymore 😕. We sure could use them now! That's exactly what Trump did. Our nation is divided because of him. It's us verses MAGA. We might be able to get rid of Trump, but it will not be easy to elimate MAGA. As long as they're involved in our government, there will be another Trump or worse running next time around. It's very important at this point to keep voting blue up and down the ballot until the Republican party can rebuild back to where they once were without MAGA...

    • @rbrindle1

And in Trump's case, the first thing he did was divide people from their sources of non-biased and truthful information. With Fox's help, people believed that only HE tells the truth. Of course, Legacy Media was never truly un-biased, the message was subtly manipulated. But at least there were guardrails insuring truth, if not immediately, then sooner or later when some reporter would get caught, and then was fired. But in MAGA, wild-haired conspiracy theories run unchecked and supported by this weird new right-wing cult media.

Thank the DoJ. Trump has worked the interstices/gaps/less-defined areas in the law so effectively, and thrown so much money at his defense against various charges, that they have never known how to handle him. They are comfortable operating only on the basis of precedent -- but for him there is no precedent. Nobody wants to be the first to act, or to have his legal judgment possibly rejected and reversed. Therefore they do almost nothing, and what little they do is done very slowly and cautiously. The legal beagles won't save us. We need to vote.

I’m reading a book titled “How to Deal with Toxic People” sent to me by a friend because my oldest daughter is in the homeschool cult; out of anger she dumped her 16 year old son in front of a homeless shelter 2 weeks before Christmas with no money, no phone, and now is in custody of his father. When back in town he stays with me (G’ma) because I don’t think 🤔 her treatment of my beloved grandson was right. And it has literally split our family and she is so toxic her other children fear her to the point of shunning me. The whole world 🌎 seems backwards to me - wrongs, such as leading a violent insurrection, is acceptable now. But these will NEVER be okay to this 77 year old widow!

A lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I show him actual sources that prove Trump is a liar and con artist. My mom, however, still fully supports him. Her husband is a far-right Trump follower and I'm guessing he has convinced her that Trump is the savior that they need. They only get their news from conservative media and anything negative about Trump is "fake news". It's sad to watch. When Trump was elected, I spent the next 4 years reading Steve Hassan's work on cults and Bob Altemeyer's studies on authoritarianism. What Trump & Co. are about becomes very clear after that. It's easy to mesh the two concepts together and understand it. Also Jen Senko's doc and book explain the same thing in personal terms. The thing that makes the Trump Cult so powerful is the daily indoctrination by Fox et al right wing media. Without it they would eventually pull away. Also, read "Exvangelicals" by Sarah McCammon, which is great at explaining the fear part of the equation.

In trying to appease the moderates abandoning him he is alienating what little base he has left. His campaign is imploding, and his trials are stacking up. Harris' favorability is higher than Biden's was in 2020, while Trump's is at its lowest. Add in overturning Roe and it's a perfect storm for a landmark landslide. Sorry, I'm old and beyond being nice to cultists. I know one, another retiree like me. He used to bother us with his cultist propaganda. So I started tormenting him by exposing Trump's lies. My favorite quote I play on my phone for him to hear is Trump saying ''I don't care about you, I care about your vote'' It makes him see red. We rarely see him now when we go for coffee. Must be hanging out more with other cultists. Maybe God will punish me for this when I kick the bucket, it's what the wife says anyway. Frankly, I don't care.
