I have a cousin who served in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He told me while he was out on patrol, their convoy got ambushed immediately after the lead vehicle hit a IED. They were engaged by the Taliban on both sides of the valley who fired with small arms, rockets and mortars. A10 support was called in just in time as they were getting surrounded. Two A10s showed up to strafe both sides of the valley and the firefight stopped immediately. That is how effective A10s are. Even if the enemy wasn't completely wiped out, the sound of those guns really did put enough fear into the Taliban to make them break contact.
@@thothheartmaat2833 I mean it works apparently. The Taliban generally hit hard when they advantage in numbers. So if US Soldiers go on patrols and look easy to hit, they can draw out the enemy into attacking and get eliminated by air support. In other cases, the Taliban would usually hit and run or just hide.

I’m just a retired Army Infantry Senior NCO and been in two wars. I was almost wiped out by an A-10 while in the 101st ABN on the Iraqi border, scared the hell, out of us but he broke off his run at the last second. Then later in 2003 we had enemy in a building pumping out fire down our MSR, the A-10 came down and it got real quiet after one pass. In the 80’s-90’s we were trained to coordinate close air support and taught the various munitions at their disposal and the best approach vectors for max impact but today they have AF liaison coordinators to talk with the birds. We knew their frequencies and once in the Gulf War we had 16” naval rifles on our support card but just for a couple days, that one kind of shocked us Grunts, lol, the 16” is more of a zip code weapon, lol. Infantry leaders carry a couple M4 magazines that’re full of tracer rounds which I use to direct fire for my platoon/squad or even air assets. Always put a few tracers at the bottom of each mag to let you know when you’re running low, during a fight, tracking ammo consumption isn’t that accurate. And always put on some tourniquets on one leg and upper arm, just safety pin it in place so when you’re hit, you can quickly clamp it down, the old cloth equipment straps work great as tourniquets if you run low. Always carry extra HC smoke grenades, you’ll need them more than you think.

My father in law (forgive me for not knowing correct terms) was in Vietnam and was the radio operator on the ground that would call airstrikes in. I had so much respect for what he did and went through. I remember him telling me a story on veterans day where he said if it weren't for these guys he never would have made it out alive. He started crying and I felt so bad. I can't imagine going into the Marines and fighting in a war at 18. Thank you to all who fought for this country. I appreciate your service🇺🇸💙
These guys are real life angels. I'll never forget the moment. We were f'd.... we ended up in an ambush surrounded. We were low on ammo and I remember sitting there thinking "is this it? Is this how I go?"... squad mate next to me a young kid had tears in his eyes as he prayed. Radio guy I remember hearing him pleading with any air asset openly begging for help. I cry everytime I tell this story. I remember as the fire on us intensified I heard someone on the radio say "I got you sit tight" Heard the screaming engines and the brrrrrrrr .....I then heard a bunch of explosions as another plane dumped ordinance. The shock waves ran through us like a powerful hug. Immediately the situation changed. It was quietness right after. The opened a way for us out and we ran like he'll. Most powerful day of my life. Witnessing all that. I cried about it for a long long time. Whoever that pilot was totally saved our hot sweaty smelly lives. I can't walk up to an a10 now and not cry. I tear up when I see then on tv.
Cesar Jimenez nah man, he wants him to repeat, aka run the same strafing pattern as recent/last. :-P Somewhere out there a 2nd Lt Artillery Officer is ordering a repeat of their last fire mission after hearing repeat on the net. :-D
The absolute terror of shooting your own guys... We watched a video during a safety brief where a Cobra (or Apache... I don't remember) pilot killed a whole bunch of his brothers, because of miscommunication. He lost his shit all of the way back to base. I can't even imagine the guilt. I honestly don't know if I could go on after that.
Damn I can't imagine how stressful this must be. The pressure of flying in a warzone , trying to positively ID a target, knowing lives depend on you ( both in protecting the troops by hitting the target, and making sure not to hit them), and knowing at any moment the enemy could try to shoot you from the sky. I get anxious just thinking about it.
3:28 RTO calmly comes on the net because the company commander/JTAC who was talking earlier is probably getting shot at or yelling commands at other units.
Talk about mutual respect and admiration. OIF 2007-2008, befriended a group of F16 pilots in Balad. Our initial conversation pretty much went, "wow, you guys run convoys", and " wow, you guys fly those F16!". Very nice group who were from Buckley AFB and played very competitive basketball.
It's so amazing watching a video like this coming from DCS as I'm learning the A-10c. Such huge respect for the pilots and other members of our military that really lived this.
i love how you can see his air speed drop a bit around 1:46 (its the number on the left side of the HUD, value around 300+ )during the first burst.. with that much recoil i can only imagine how devastating 30mm rounds being fired at a rate so high must be for the enemy
Such an amazing machine and one of my fondest memories as a kid was surfing near Camp Lejeune and watching the A10s fly over us when one pilot inverted and waved at us while we were all going nuts in the water.
@@philliphampton5183 Exactly. The only reason the air force still operates them is because of pressure from the army. There is still nothing else that can fill it's role of saving the asses of US army troops pinned in shit situations on the ground.

It looks sooooo confusing. You're just zooming in over buildings, and trying to be talked into position by someone who has a completely different point of view.
This is just the HUD camera. They have cameras in the cockpit that can zoooom way in. Plus Grid Marks and smoke. They never push that red button until everyone is on exact same line on the exact same page.
You can see he didn't use the camera. The "dip check" at the very end of the video was actually to get the target marked and camera pointed. Its simply smoke and being talked on. As for the talk on, its really a lot easier than it sounds. For example something like "see the big building, its to the south just next to the red shack". A bit of confirmation and you have both people on the same place and, more importantly, confirmation of that. Thats also why 2 didn't do a run on the first, he wasn't completely confirmed as to where to go. After seeing the impact he was ready to go but 1 asked him to wait until the second run.
410 rounds of BRRRRT. Once he switches to the gun the ammo counter appears on the left, you can see it going down during the run. Starts at 1150 rounds.
I was active duty USN when the A-10 was accepted by the USAF - I STILL believe that aircraft was one of the best at its job ever. I know they're retiring it, but that airplane and the people who flew and took care of it definitely earned their pay IMHO! :) Regardless of branch, I loved my military. Still do, I guess.

Ordance is easy to drop with concise GPS coordinates positioning. Just don't fuck up at either end be it ground or air positioning. Its pretty foolproof as long as there are no fools at either end.
@@scottouellette9411 Very true. I think it was 2009 someone gave the wrong coordinates to a B-1, and their bomb killed 26 to 147 Afghans we were trying to protect. (And the Air Force purposely left that out of their report that supposedly made the A-10 look like it made a lot of friendly fire kills.)
Two is off, lead pilot is the LEAD. Pilot two wanted to help out stressed infantry, pilot one wanted more intel before more air to ground fire was provided.
My Grandfather was a CSM doing Weapon System Assessments, for the Joint Chief's. He actually showed me the original 8mm Films, of the Trials. This was around 1969 or so and I was a little Kid. I will never forget the sound or sight of those Aircraft just chewing Tanks to pieces, on the Test Range. Some of the Film was represented in Slow-mo and you would just see little pricks of light at first, then the entire Turret followed by the Body would just disintegrate, in a Ball of Flames. Unreal.
I’ve heard it said that while US troops were scary enough to fight against, a good amount of their power came from their ability to call in literal death from above and the A-10 is definitely a major part of that
It’s not good in a modern battlefield as much as I hate to say it. It performs well against insurgents with no AA but it’s too slow to use in combat against a modern nation with AA but it definitely has its niche and fills it well
I think the source of confusion here is that the Air Force published a misleading report in 2014 or so, and a reporter saw it and wrote a sensational article about the A-10 being a friendly fire cluster ****. A civilian watchdog organization looked at the same data and called out the AF on their bullshit. The Air Force spokesperson who responded had some answer to the effect that it wasn't their fault the reporter came to those conclusions, and by the time he was done clarifying (backpedaling) he actually made the A-10 sound pretty good.
How they're able to direct fire from ground to air and then from air to ground be dang near precisely on target is simply mind blowing amazing. God bless America!

Asghaad without fighter jet CAP, the A-10s would be sitting ducks. It’s a team effort.
How weird i remember you when you played sfs
Who's the hottie that keeps saying 'altitude'?
They use female computer voices as males are less likely to "believe" a male voice.
she is referred to as "bitchin betty", she provides the pilot with various audio warnings and she is old enough to be way past "hottie" status.

I Worked hard to be a airline pilot.
I saw the A10 years ago in Hartford .
When I was running freight in a old piston airplane.
If I was a American.
I wanted that job.
Well from Canada.
No chance.
However.
I always saw so much respect from the Americans.
God bless you all.
I miss those days
Love how you see the camera shake violently from the power of that GAU-8 30mm cannon, along with the hits you start to see down range. Must be the most comforting thing to hear/see while under intense fire. God bless our troops!
I remember as the fire on us intensified I heard someone on the radio say "I got you sit tight"
Heard the screaming engines and the brrrrrrrr .....I then heard a bunch of explosions as another plane dumped ordinance.

I don't think the enemy here is capable of locking at and shooting down a plane like the warthog. They're defenseless against airstrikes.
kill em all, let god sort em out
Just listening I am stressed waiting for next run. Knowing these guys on the ground are taking fire. Keep heads down . Be safe.
the plane eas built to fly through broken engines, theres pictures of an a10 with a destroyed engine and bullet holes everywhere, landed fine

It's so amazing watching a video like this coming from DCS as I'm learning the A-10c. Such huge respect for the pilots and other members of our military that really lived this.
I fly it in dcs and it makes it easy to understand the weapons and symbology
i love how you can see his air speed drop a bit around 1:46 (its the number on the left side of the HUD, value around 300+ )during the first burst.. with that much recoil i can only imagine how devastating 30mm rounds being fired at a rate so high must be for the enemy
only bits and pieces left.
If I were on the ground calling in air support in fear of losing my life, I think I would cry seeing an A 10 BRRRRT'ing overhead.
Such an amazing machine and one of my fondest memories as a kid was surfing near Camp Lejeune and watching the A10s fly over us when one pilot inverted and waved at us while we were all going nuts in the water.
The A-10 is the avenging angel of the US army
Fuck You Google It’s an Airforce plane, but yes.
Jeffery Randall he means because it almost exclusively is an Army support platform
@@philliphampton5183 Exactly. The only reason the air force still operates them is because of pressure from the army. There is still nothing else that can fill it's role of saving the asses of US army troops pinned in shit situations on the ground.

Fitting, because the 30mm gun it has is nicknamed the avenger.
Watching this plane in action is a thing of beauty. What an amazing piece of military tech. Best plane of all time confirmed
I like how you can tell when he’s firing by the camera distortion. Even though you can’t hear it, you can tell it’s powerful enough to distort the camera whenever it fires (though that probably happens to any plane camera).

Bagram was far less awesome. BTW... the ground controller was 100% okay with the S to North pass...
He generated a waypoint for the friendlies and has selected it as the steer, as you can see by the bottom-right data block. He makes his run over friendlies (as he should) and egresses away from them as well.
The officer on the ground did a great FAC job! The troops with him were lucky to have a smart, intelligent, and knowledgable officers with them!

* Climbs for 10 sec.
A10: Altitude altitude!!!
* Pilot dives towards the ground
A10: Ahhh, thats better. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrp Brrrrrrrrrrrrp Brrrrrrrrrrrp

Gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling to see an a-10 taking pressure off some ground soldiers! ☺️ to all who served and serve, thank you and God bless!
The A-10 is an absolute beast of a plane.
Heh. Well. "Never"
You can see he didn't use the camera.
Oliver Mayo
I mean he was being shot at to be fair, you can understand his frustration. He wanted maximum brrrrt on target as fast as possible
Sensors are a good help, like “Look at (grid)” yeah those buildings in your crosshairs is your target
410 rounds of BRRRRT.
Once he switches to the gun the ammo counter appears on the left, you can see it going down during the run. Starts at 1150 rounds.
Having flown the A-10 in DCS World quite a bit really helps with understanding the HUD data.
2, I said cover!
I didn't think the pros also made those mistakes. 2 probably heard some during debriefing.
The maintenance of situation awareness always amazes me. I'm sure it's easier than the tunnel vision video makes it appear, but kudos regardless.
That's incredible! You can hear the anticipation in the voice of the radio op. He's begging for air support
2:04

“That is our target” just sounded so slick
“Dude, I said cover”
“I knoww, but I’m sitting on the mother of all autocannons, and I may never have another chance to unleash the dragon”
“Aite clear and hot”
Commander on the ground was amazing in providing clear and concise target acquisition for the flyboys.
Ordance is easy to drop with concise GPS coordinates positioning. Just don't fuck up at either end be it ground or air positioning. Its pretty foolproof as long as there are no fools at either end.
FLYBOYS MERRY CHRISTMAS
@@scottouellette9411 Very true. I think it was 2009 someone gave the wrong coordinates to a B-1, and their bomb killed 26 to 147 Afghans we were trying to protect.

Two is off, lead pilot is the LEAD. Pilot two wanted to help out stressed infantry, pilot one wanted more intel before more air to ground fire was provided.
this whole thing gave me so much anxiety. The pilot sounded so calm and prepared for the situation, honestly incredible what these pilots do
My Grandfather was a CSM doing Weapon System Assessments, for the Joint Chief's. Unreal.
I’ve heard it said that while US troops were scary enough to fight against, a good amount of their power came from their ability to call in literal death from above and the A-10 is definitely a major part of that
To think that the Air Force was seriously contemplating retiring this plane send shivers down my spine!
It’s not good in a modern battlefield as much as I hate to say it. It performs well against insurgents with no AA but it’s too slow to use in combat against a modern nation with AA but it definitely has its niche and fills it well
Yeah, it’s a great plane.
When your objective is to hit friendlies and get shot down by any modern AA.
To all of you service men THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
What a job, man... A-10 = coolest aircraft in the military
