Indonesian Street Food - Chocolate Cheese Martabak Dessert

- In Indonesia, there are generally two types of martabak: 1) Sweet Martabak and 2) Savory Martabak (one with egg and meat).
This one here is a sweet martabak. During assembly, it looks a bit like a Chicago style deep dish pizza. Common fillings used in this Indonesian sweet treat are crushed peanuts, chocolate rice (or chocolate sprinkles), grated cheese, and condensed milk.
Murtabak or martabak, also mutabbaq (Arabic: مطبق) (Thai: มะตะบะ), is a stuffed pancake or pan-fried bread which is commonly found in Saudi Arabia (especially the Tihamah and the Hejaz regions), Yemen, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand. Depending on the location, the name and ingredients can significantly vary. The name mutabbaq (or sometimes mutabbag) in Arabic means "folded".
In Indonesia, the Murtabak is one of the most popular street foods and is known as "martabak".

omg this is something i would definitely eat in there, looks delicious. found recipe for batter:)
1/2 tbsp yeast
1 cup warm coconut milk
1 cup bread flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp margarine (and more for brushing pan and pancake - best if you have Indonesian Blue Band or Wijsman Dutch butter!)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp water

u need a really smooth heavy cast iron pan for that, and cooking needs to be on a very wide but gentle flame. otherwise it will burnt on one side and wont be done in the other side. i haven't try induction stove top, but in theory could work.

@@user-tj6vv9mg8g if you afraid about the spiciness of our food which is ubiquitous in our cuisine , you could say "jangan pedas" they will lighten up the spiciness and regarding of martabak manis vendor like the one here they usually only opens in the evening up until midnight and choose one which have many people queuing for order.
I had this when I was a teenager in Jakarta...... One of the best things I have ever tasted in my life.... it's SO good you have no idea.

I love Martabak!! In my country it called Apam Balik or Kueh Malaya. I only buy martabak if the one who cooks it is Indonesian because it taste way more delicious compare to local people! Famous Apam balik in my country was made by Indonesian as well!😘😘

Both Martabaks are such a comfort food for me, which i don't eat too much for obvious health reasons. I hated egg as a kid. But trying The savory Martabak when i was in my teens, is what made me start to like eggs, which i love. My Mum also used to make the sweet Martabak herself at home. She would always make one which had a filling of cheese, Chocolate and crushed peanuts. Put a slice for yourself in the microwave to make it hot, and you got the PERFECT comfort dessert for a winter night!

@@emilyjakubik I'm pretty sure you mind find a White chocolate variation too. I remember seeing street vendors when i went to visit Grandparents in Jakarta a few years ago. They had unique fillings such as 'Skippy', Nutella, Oreo. So Hey, all various possibilities you can find!

This thing is dirt cheap. As little as $4 can give you big, full portion of sweet cake enough for entire family. Much cheaper than kfc and mcdonald menus in here

yeah thats what i thought when i was watching videos, on how to make food in India, made by the local villagers. i finally broke down with my husband, excited to try something new, and went to a local Indian cuisine restaurant. my husband took one bite of his dinner, and could not eat anymore, and couldnt bear to swallow it as well. i had the buttery tomato chicken, which tasted nothing like tomatoes or butter. it did however have a subtle taste of cinnamon. we asked for our check and to go box, and left a nice tip, after all our waiter was quite helpful and graceful. we then went home, and promptly threw the food in the garbage, and ate our to go meals we bought on the way. the little bit i did eat of my food, i stunk to high heaven for the next 2 days out my pores! Ack! i will never eat that food again.

This is why Indonesia is so diverse when it comes to culture, even i, an Indonesian still not understand every dialects from every regions here, like this java language they used in this video for example.
The only local languages i can totally understand are melayu and minang only..

For you who don't really like too much sweet. Sweet Martabak actually has many flavours. In this video is one of the flavours. Other than this one, I also like "peanut+milk" and "coconut+sticky rice+milk". Yummy 😋😋
