The filming of this was spectacular. Absolute profession level. Your use of the drone is seamless. i never miss an episode and you just keep getting better all the time.
Hey guys, just a heads up on the cargo boxes you’ve fitted to Nanuk, you might find that any kind of weight in them may well start warping the sheet metal you’ve mounted them in. It would be worth getting a couple of support brackets made up to mount to the chassis and hold up the boxes from the underside in order to prevent the warping. It would be best to use a couple of rivets through the bottom of the boxes onto the brackets too to prevent movement - anti-squeak and anti-flex.
Also, if the tub is steel not aluminium, you’ll maybe want to put some silicone between the boxes and the tub to prevent water ingress, and paint on the backside for corrosion prevention :)
That's what I also thought. To protect from corrosion, you should have used special anti-corrosion-fluid on the metal edges and a little bit silicone like decasil (so it's named in germany) as sealing between car metal and new box. That would protect from dripping water between these two and causing rust 🙃 (i know, I'm 10 months too late telling this 🙈🤷🏼♀️) greetings 👋🏻😊
So true, I used to love watching this channel, but lately, it’s becoming, the Fun Times with Dan and Kika show. I miss Uma and would love to see if any forward progress is being made. But anyway they do know how to tell a story and all of their videos are well made.
My guess is, and has been the same since they bought the truck, that they’ve been working on Uma all the way through these other videos. If you think about, it’s not like the truck has any major changes, or even minor changes, between videos, and there isn’t footage of 4-6 days of an overland adventure. I believe we have ALL seen that “lazy” would be the very last description one could use for either Dan or Kika; so it begs the question “what is occupying their weekdays?”, I’d say there is no question that Uma’s refit is well underway and will be revealed in videos to come. What they accomplish in, say a 2-4 week period, is going to look A LOT better condensed in a 20-45 minute video vs 3-4 DAYS of repetitive tasks. I predict they will likely have “the build” series starting shortly and it will probably be 8-10 weeks behind “live”. As always, we will get some well thought out, shot and directed productions, or “episodes”. It takes just incredible amounts of TIME to properly edit video; getting a 25-30 minute final video easily involves 15-20 hours of editing, especially the kind of videos they produce. Keyword being “produce”; these are productions, not “a bunch of random clips, stitched together with cookie-cutter transitions between them. Yup, I may be totally wrong and way off course, but somehow…. I don’t think I am too far off of the truth.
Holy photonerdification... the cuts starting around 8:00 were perfect. I know it's not easy to set the tone in these things, but whoever is editing is doing it right. Great job on combining TV perfection and TH-cam intimacy.
I think maybe Dan would have done everything needed to do a proper installation of those boxes but no harm in asking the question, because we didn't see him do it!
I love your weekly program! Great content! One quick note about beam your sponsor - their product contains melatonin as you pointed out correctly, however please, note studies show if you use products containing melatonin regularly (more than a week) you do interfere and reduce your own body’s natural production of melatonin. So extensive use of products containing melatonin is potentially problematic and generates an elevated health risk. Particularly for those taking blood pressure medication. Thanks again for taking viewers on your journey!
Great video, love the drone footage. You have become quite the cinematographer! I started watching for the sailing content, but I enjoy things not sailing related as well so the break from boat stuff doesn't bother me in the least. Keep enjoying life, couch-less.
Yes, a friend of mine had a car „Handmade in the UK“ end of the 1970s. He had it for about 1 year. I said had, he did drive it for only about 6 months. The remaining 6 months the car was in the garage to be repaired. Then he sold it and got a reliable car.
Hi Dan and Kika, you commented "What percentage of a video needs to be about a sailboat to make it a “sailing channel”?" It isn't about how much of a video has to be about a sailboat to make it a sailing channel, but how many episodes in a row avoid any image or mention of your sweet little boat, that we all have affection for, that you've stripped down to just about the limit of what can be done without hauling on to the hard. We really LIKE your little moving home. She's a central character in your story, life, lifestyle. A mention would probably have headed off most of the comments before they even happened. @SailingUma
I’m always in awe of the places you go and your filming and editing style. This video was no exception and really caught my attention a few time. It’s just delightful watching you live this adventures life you’ve built.
I am a little late on this one but I am blown away by the Beauty around you.....I also wonder how old that road is and people that have traveled on it....
You guys are lucky to have supporters like Luke and Margo not only to help with the installation of those cargo boxes but to share adventures with as well.
Just wonderful episode as always. Just a side note on Beam- calcium and magnesium compete for absorption and calcium always wins. This renders the all important “sleepy time” magnesium unabsorbed and therefore ineffective. Might be better to use a liquid base that is not calcium rich. Very best Fayaway crew
Love your channel! 9 minutes into it, I feel I need to mention 2 important things that settled into my head. 1. Cut hole for box. 2. Kika’s barefoot driving. 1. Structurally it’s a concern when the box is in like that, and it’s been said you’d like to put in dirty and heavy things into there, I think the aluminium body is not going to hold that box in place eventually, while moving, bumping etc, then the top part would be pulled in, or bottom part pushed out. Damaged. The solution would be fitting a steel brace around the box to be bolted to the chassis above. Or side brackets on each sides of boxes to be bolted to chassis? Or maybe just a bent steel plate bolted at end of box attached to above.. just flying with ideas! 2. Kika should wear shoes while driving, very least ones that feels like barefeet. Because there may be a situation that she might need to immediately step away from vehicle, so that’s not ideal. (Broken glass etc) Just thinking I could be helpful.
I don’t have a car and I ride my bicycle with sandals. But I photograph bare footed or with light shoes on, I like the sensation of being able to feel my surroundings through my feet when I am trying to connect with my subject. Also in Africa it is a matter of respect to take your shoes off before you enter someone’s space…
Overlanding barefoot is awesome with all the scorpions, spiders, thorns, rocks, geckos, and other critters that always find their way into the footwell.
LoL you went camping with South Africans, and that's what we do when we go camping, we eat meat!! Lots of it!!😂❤Loved the shot of braai salt and the explanation of boerewors😂🇿🇦 Awesome video guys, thanks for sharing your adventures with us!!❤🇿🇦❤❤
I drove around Sardinia twice while I lived there for a couple of years . First time we took the exterioir route & circumnavigated the island . 2nd time we went interior for some astonishig scenery . Both trips done in a convertible Fiat 500 ( the newer one ) . Good times ;)
I always drive barefoot if I can. Far more feel for the pedals, less likely to overreact. And yes, it's far more comfortable as well as your foot isn't locked at an unnatural angle by the shape of the shoe. Safer than driving with flipflops or sandals especially as well, nothing to get stuck under the pedal!
I have class A CDL, not the automatic trucks of today but a 21 speed n I always drove my Kenworth barefoot. I can drive an automatic with shoes but a standard I’m barefoot. Something about feeling the clutch brake n holding it on hills. My friends think I’m nuts( shhh I already know I’m crazy). So I showed them I’m not the only one!! Thank you
Hi guys. Being a former Suffolk Regiment driver, I seem to recall the pedal design was with angles and clearances for big muddy boots to use in tactical contexts. :-)
Actually it was designed for Big muddy boots for farming contexts :-)! Originally the Landrover was meant to be used on farms as a kind of utility vehicle/light tractor, to replace the designers jeep in Anglesey.
I’m not sure why some people feel the need to tell other folks how to live their lives! But I’m happy that Dan and Kika have the independence to do what they want to do on each video and don’t tell their viewers what to do with their lives. Just saying.
I did this on a brand new MB Sprinter cargo van for the fan, windows etc. Once you make the first hole and realize there is no going back the fun begins.
I recently saw an electric incineration toilet that is designed for camping and off-grid applications. Are you thinking of using one of these for toilet and food scraps? Looks like the time to consider, I would be interested if these things stand up to boat life.
The ones we’ve seen is an absurd amount of electricity. Most of the places we sail, it’s just not an issue. It’s a natural part of the ecosystem. No need to over complicate it.
Epic video drone footage. To traverse so far and not get wet, is criminal. A quick shallow dip, currents, too rough, too cold. Or a test of a shallow pool or stream. Mountainous Sardinia looks marvelous.

Have 1985 110 auto diesel. When not working on the boat, am working on the land rover. Those boxes fit well...and that's what I can't be sure from most others I have seen.
Nice people that helped you. I love camping out and sleeping in a tent. Want to do that some more this summer and also looking to put a tent on the roof of our sedan.
Always love watching, like many, an update on Uma would be nice. I’m thinking you guys are just letting various design ideas incubate. Enjoying the journey, thanks.
Two parachute material (cause small to pack) hammocks would be a good option for guests. Plus a 4m×4m tarpaulin and rope if you think it's going to rain. Just need trees, don't worry about ground and can be used on boats too. 😊
In summer i drive almost always barefoot since I tend to wear flip flops all the time and you can’t drive with those on. And barefoot you feel the pedals…
That's a very cool truck! I want one when I visit Europe. I might end up shipping it to the USA when I'm done using it in Europe but we shall see when that time comes. Your living the dream right in my opinion. That's the way to travel on a budget and in style.
Please check the trafic rules for Italy: I found that sandals and slippers are prohibited for driving, but I could not find a confirmation that barefoot driving is allowed.
Kika, Since Uma's top speed is in the neighborhood of 7kts, and your land yacht's top speed is perhaps an order of magnitude greater at maybe 70kts, then I think you might consider naming her Zuma or Zooma, your choice on spelling.
Driving barefoot is illegal in some countries and could be problematic with your insurance company if you had to file a claim. The issue is if you have something sharp stuck to the bottom of your foot and had to make an emergency stop. The sharp object may mean you are not as effective as you could be in stopping the vehicle either pulling your foot away from the peddle or not pressing as hard as you normally would.
All I can say thank goodness all British Land Rovers are Hand Built because you can't do this to any other 4 wheel drive type. Be aware in a lot of countries driving barefoot is illegal. But in the UK any type of lose fitting footwear is also illegal especially flip flop types.
Always enjoyable to watrch your adventures in such beautiful surroundings! Sometimes it seems better to improvise while camping than go totally prepared! (Don't buy a couch OR a table!)
The problem may be that having torn everything out of UMA there are no longer any reference points to establish a DWL to get the interior level to the water. If the reference line is wrong, the interior will not be built level. The old Pearson boats had a dimple forward and a dimple aft, outside on the centerline to show the DWL. The DWL is level to the water. Check if the dimples are there, being outside. Another way to determine a line parallel to the DWL is off the aft head bulkhead which is 90 to the DWL, but I think that was taken out. The sailboat masts were placed to lean 1 degree aft when positioned to keep from looking as if the mast was leaning forward. Check the mast step to determine a line 89 degrees to the DWL BUT BE CAREFUL. Hopefully this will help. Another possible method to set a DWL is put a bulkhead back into position using a 3/4" thick board that is straight with no bending. Set it in one of the bulkhead grooves and also find a mark on the hull at the bottom where the stringers are. This may show you where the perpendicular to the DWL was but again, be very careful and check twice. Best of luck if this is the reason you are no longer rebuilding UMA.
We just searched online for months on many different website. I can’t remember exactly which site we found this one on. There are a lot for sale in Europe. Just make sure you test drive it. We drove over a dozen and they’re definitely not all created or maintained equally.
I’m starting to miss Uma 😢

Aluminium???
The body shell of all land rovers is Aluminium
@@johnelliott3510 yep, but aluminium can still become pitted if exposed

Great video, glad you work in some adventures inbetween working on Uma but speaking of Uma, would love to see an update on the rebuild!
I often see old TH-cam’s posted involving UMA, but how about some more recent updates! I do enjoy your posting !!
Great video, love the drone footage. You have become quite the cinematographer! I started watching for the sailing content, but I enjoy things not sailing related as well so the break from boat stuff doesn't bother me in the least. Keep enjoying life, couch-less.
„Hand made in the UK” is about the most un-complimentary remark to a vehicle one could ever make. And very honest
Yes, a friend of mine had a car „Handmade in the UK“ end of the 1970s. He had it for about 1 year. I said had, he did drive it for only about 6 months. The remaining 6 months the car was in the garage to be repaired. Then he sold it and got a reliable car.
Hi guys, do you have any news about your boat? I miss UMA.
Me too. And I have already asked this during the videos, but unfortunately there is no answer.

When the braai salt came out it confirmed the South African in the house ... loved that
i just paused and went back to confirm that my eyes weren't deceiving. then i heard the oke talk.hahaha
you guys ever going to show any work on the boat?
Love seeing the world through your travels land and sea.
Dont forget to rust protect the cuts. Pain. Seal. Whatever it takes otherwise down the road it'll rust out.

Yeah, you can’t just glass it back in like a boat.
good point. not to mention, this one won't sink if it has holes 😂.

Love a good roadtrip!
Beautiful episode, I’m growing worried about Uma, proof of life please
Nice, But I Can't wait for you to get back to the Boat Project!

We are.
Have you a link for the boxes? Need for mine for sure. Thank you. J
I was thinking that seemed like a lot of meat, then I seen the Braai salt, and realised what was up, that was just a SA snack.
Was that a rotary rivet gun attachment you were using? I've never seen that type before.

Awesome landscape filming!
I recently saw an electric incineration toilet that is designed for camping and off-grid applications. Are you thinking of using one of these for toilet and food scraps? Looks like the time to consider, I would be interested if these things stand up to boat life.
The ones we’ve seen is an absurd amount of electricity.

You guys are the best at B roll.
I for one am enjoying the addition of your Landie adventures. Keep the coming - from a sailing AND Landi aficionado.
Epic video drone footage. To traverse so far and not get wet, is criminal. A quick shallow dip, currents, too rough, too cold. Or a test of a shallow pool or stream. Mountainous Sardinia looks marvelous.

Loving it… could uma make an appearance?
Nice people that helped you. I love camping out and sleeping in a tent. Want to do that some more this summer and also looking to put a tent on the roof of our sedan.
Just to let you know I have been following you guys for a long time. Love your bod cast.
Always love watching, like many, an update on Uma would be nice. I’m thinking you guys are just letting various design ideas incubate. Enjoying the journey, thanks.
Looks like a great place to explore.
Thank you for this voyage. Does anybody know where to find this kind of watertight boxes and how they are called?
Summer time is no-shoes time when driving. The daily driver, the roadster, the motor home. More feeling for the machine and being barefoot is best.
Fab, well done! Luke and Margo were lovely!! 🤗🤗
I've been a longtime fan of the Sailing Uma, however, I'm not too into Driving Nanook. I'll be back when the focus is the boat.
I frequently wear slip-on Dansko clog type shoes driving. Too cold for barefoot, but definitely without shoes. And easy in when I need to get out.
That's a very cool truck! I want one when I visit Europe. I might end up shipping it to the USA when I'm done using it in Europe but we shall see when that time comes. Your living the dream right in my opinion. That's the way to travel on a budget and in style.
Definitely the best sailing channel on Ytb :-)
"Braai" salt? Very South African....😊 I thought Braai (BBQ) was a term only used in SA now I'm seeing it in a lot of videos on TH-cam.
Hurry up and get that boat fixed please. I need the sea. My wife won't let me by a boat so you guys are it.

I always drive barefoot. I have much better feel of pedal pressure and have more control of the vehicle.
Cheers Eric
Good thing you put that snorkel on the car. LoL
Ah another day in the VanLife Camping site. Do you still own a boat?
@Dan, hey can you give me the contact you used to find your Defender?
We just searched online for months on many different website. I can’t remember exactly which site we found this one on. There are a lot for sale in Europe. Just make sure you test drive it. We drove over a dozen and they’re definitely not all created or maintained equally.
