I hate keep inventory so much because of how bad the people I met that use it are I know it's a little toxic to say but I'm just tired of essentially playing single and a half player every time I play with my friend's sister
Well that used to be the case but my friend convinced his sister to start playing with it off around a year ago and she started actually improving Turns out she is actually a competitor for best bow user on my friend group I will challenge her for a duel one of these days
I think the issue is that the other transportation methods just aren't up to snuff with the Elytras, so buffs to those would help. The minecart changes are on the right track to that

Elytras need to be nerfed. They're absolutely busted and no matter how much you buff everything else elytras will always curb stomp them because they're fundamentally broken

Another important thing about the Elytra is how useful it is for building. Building things is that main focus of Minecraft and i cant ever imagine buildimg anything large without it.
A very important story about horses.. When horses first came out in 1.6 Lots players were obsessed with them. They were faster than Minecarts that was huge for the time. What makes it even better are splash speed potions. In that time period Horses were the fastest way to travel.
Actually I love horses in Minecraft because I love to ride them out horse amour but to be honest what if there will be a nertherite horse armor in the next Minecraft update 1.22
Horses in Bedrock (go figure) can actually be genetically mutated to go faster by breeding with potion effects active (ex. a really fast horse would need to be bred with the parents having the Speed effect) the potion effects also stack, so you can in theory go as fast, stronger, and jump higher as you want to put the effort into.
I think the only problem is the Minecart since it's underwhelming compared to everything else and tedious to set up especially since now in 1.21 you can put leads on boats which BY FAR makes that the best way to transport mobs
agreed, though it still at least holds a niche for when you need to put a mob in a REALLY specific location like in a confined space in a farm or contraption of some kind
They should have it so you can use the leash or chain to link up minecarts, then it could fill a better niche by letting you transport multiple mobs and items in one journey.
this is one of those issues where the very vocal core fanbase represents like 5% of the actual players. I probably have like 1,000 hours of Minecraft and I’ve only ever gotten the Elytra like 2 or 3 times. Ive also never set up any gun powder farms in my life. To a lot of people outside of the hardcore fans, stuff like that isn’t worth learning how to do since it’s not super intuitive through in-game learning and it requires outside research and knowledge. Just my take, and I think you are spitting facts in this video
Instead of nerfing elytra I wish mojang adds the feature to ride cows with a saddle so that me and my friends can duel game of thrones style but on the back of a cow.
While I agree that the Minecraft community is overreacting about travel, I do think the minecart needed a buff. Afk travel isn’t really a good niche when said travel is 5x slower than the elytra so instead of waiting, you could just get there faster and takes a lot longer and a lot more resources to set up. Also, I wouldn’t include mob transportation as a plus for travel as that to me feels like a completely different situation (which I will admit, the minecart does excel in). So while I wouldn’t say Minecraft has a travel problem, I’d say the minecart is flawed in Minecraft’s travel system
Horses need a swiming mechanic, adrenaline rush when encountering mobs, making them 20% faster and 30% stronger. They also need a set base speed of 10 blocks p/s, and 2 blocks jump height. The max being 24 blocks p/s, and 5 blocks height. Enchantment for their armor as well, so they can actually swim faster, jump further(this needs to be a new mechanic, where horses jumps forward, instead of upwards when in movement.) to clear gaps. We also need a better pov when riding horses, its really hard to use a bow when all you can see is their heads.
I'm on the camp that it's definitely unbalanced to some capacity, with the Elytra being pretty overtuned all things considered. But for the others, the new minecart changes look very promising, and I feel like their use in redstone balances themselves out. Ice boats are always nice (lol), and I feel like if the Elytra gets a mild nerf, and horses get a good buff (like the former breeding bug in Bedrock, except moderated), transport could be fully balanced. What we really need though is the addition of the Batmobile.
You get the elytra after you beat the game. It's a sandbox game and this is a really good reward. It helps with the massive build projects, I really wouldn't want it to get nerfed. Buff everything else instead.

@@tazepatates4805 I feel personally that elytra is a bit of a TOO good of a reward, because it's not that difficult to beat the Ender Dragon. Minecraft obviously isn't supposed to be a very difficult game, but just the fact you can speedrun it in like 20 minutes says a lot.

I have never gotten the elytra complaints, I do think horses are kind of mid, but they work really well early game, or in midevil style worlds, like those based on dungeons and dragons. And I would personally argue the boat is the best transportation method due to its acsessability, and how prominant water is in most worlds.
I feel like they should add a new rail type. It would use copper instead of gold, but it would be the same speed as the current powered rail. The gold powered rail would should be buffed to 12b/s or 16b/s. This would make redstoners happy and everyone else. Hopefully
Maybe they could make so minecarts can very slowly build up a lot of speed so in EXTREMELY long distances they are a better travel method for going from point A to point B

Completely agree with your point about the Elytra at the end, was actually going to leave a comment about it before you mentioned it yourself. Like dude, I went to Hell, fought living fire, fought reject slendermen, crossed half the world by horse or on foot, killed an ENTIRE DRAGON, slowly and precariously bridged across a void of nothingness for potentially thousands of blocks, climbed an entire tower while being bombarded by shots from one of the most annoying enemies in the game, and then even once I’ve got the damn thing I’ve gotta infuse it with magic, beat a magically infused book into it, and then farm copious amounts of sugar cane and kill copious amounts of living bombs before I can even use it effectively, PLUS I’ll need a way to farm xp so I can fix it every once in a while. For all of that work, I’d say outpacing every other method in most areas is plenty alright.
One point about the horse I've heard someone talk about was that it's difficult/inconvenient to navigate dense forests since the leaves would block your path. The solution mentioned by this same person offered was to make it so that you could ride through only the leaf blocks but with the exception of the tree logs. I forgot the name of the guy who came up with this idea, so just know that I didn't come up with it.
I would honestly be very pissed if Mojang nerfed the elytra. Yes it is a bit overpowered but what is wrong with that? Every transportation method has their own uses so the system seems fairly decent to me. However, there are a few changes that I think need to be made. 1. Minecarts are way to slow. Just make them faster (happy to see they`re already doing that) 2. Minecart tracks are too expensive to be worth it for early game or long distance travel. By the time you have the farms required to easily make a ton you most likely already have an elytra. Either make them cheaper or let copper be used to craft them as it is easy to get a lot of and would give it a real use. 3. Trying to get a horse over water makes me want to just never use horses again. Skeleton horses kind of fix this problem but they are too rare to count. Either make it to where horses have a long jump that allows them to clear rivers or let them swim while being ridden.
Fun fact: Minecarts were sped up a long time ago in the Legacy Console Editions by 4J. Guess they thought that they needed more speed, even when the more powerful methods of travel were less known or not in the game yet.
I have an idea for balancing transport: make minecarts a bit faster (like maybe 12bps) and allow players to attach minecarts together to make a train-like situation

No. The point of elytra is to be a tradeoff. You can either fly, or have protection. And with the quickswap ability, the chestplate/elytra dichotomy really isn't an issue.
The fact you need to manually switch between the elytra and chestplate is too fundamental a mechanic to change, the whole point is that you're trading safety for better movement. The ominous bottle changing up the dragon fight would be sick though I REALLY like that idea
Or just make the enderdragon egg hatchable and let us have pet dragons. They could be slower than elytra wings but I feel like having to take care of your dragon like you have to take care of your horse would already be enough of a downside.
Yeah the travel issue is highly blown out of proportion. Also I feel like nerfing the Elytra would remove a good reason to even visit the end which to me just boils down to down to Shulker Boxes are nothing else. (Unless you love PurPur or Endstone).
In a game that's supposed to be about doing whatever you want, being able to fly fast does fit the theme well, and it's just very fun to do I still get use out of other travel methods though! And while yeah this game does support multiplayer, it's rare for transportation to be something players compete at unless it's the glide minigame, so it's fine for the Elytra to be superior
Your point about the pickaxes being like the transportation methods was the most convincing element to me. Maybe people just have an attachment to the Minecraft, it being a much older Minecraft element?
I don’t think traveling really has a problem. I personally only think that Minecarts and Horses should be buffed, *not* to compete with the elytra/ice boat but to give a bigger incentive to use them. Horses are good for early game, but they have a handful of cons compared to the one pro, being a little faster than the player, depending on the horse. It takes a *lot* to get a max speed horse, so it would be nice if that was made a bit easier. As a long time legacy console player, it was shocking to see how slow Minecarts were in other editions. I think Minecarts should be faster than horses, since they take a bit to set up. They are still fun to use tho.
Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker, I tried my best to write my thoughts clear. My opinion why I don't really like the fact that elytra is just better than other transportation methods. Comparing this to wooden pickaxe - netherite pickaxe example there're 2 differences: 1. Wooden pickaxe is used to get netherite pickaxe. You mine stone with a wooden pickaxe, iron with stone pickaxe, etc. So all pickaxes (except for golden) are useful because there're used in a progression. A lot of people don't use anything but sprinting because elytra are not so hard to obtain and horses/minecarts aren't required for them. So many people don't bother making railways or farming the best horse. 2. Horses/minecarts/etc. are a lot more unique. It isn't a big deal if some types of hoe or axe aren't really useful because they are just another type of the same tool. But something like minecarts or horses have a lot of mechanics, a lot of unique gameplay. And they have a big potential to be used more often and I just want this potential to be unlocked, it will make the game more interesting. Talking about some methods specifically... I think there is no real problem with horses. A lot of people use them because there're not hard to get. Maybe it's even OK for them to be just worse then elytra, it feels like a fair progression. But minecarts should get better. Multi-purpose travel methods like elytra already have an advantage of freedom. So things like minecarts or boats on ice should be faster (or have other advantages like an ability to transport mobs). And the boats are faster but minecarts... They're just so much slower than boats on ice and even elytra... I think it won't spoil anything else if minecarts will get more competitive with boats on ice. It will be fair and will give players more to choose from even in late-game. Elytras are, as I think, too fast. A lot of people don't bother making even ice roads because elytras are fast enough to travel between any places. BUT there isn't easy solution to this problem. Someone can say that slowing down elytra is a solution. Yeah, methods requiring making a road to use will become more useful (even if there're slowed down too, as I think should be done in the case of elytra nerf, boost from 16 to 30 blocks/sec is much more useful than from 30 to 60 blocks/sec). But it will make the main use for elytra - traveling big distances in any directions - much more painful. It can be fixed only by making overworld more interesting to explore overall... So elytra nerf will be a good option only after a lot of years. Right now it will only cause new problems.
I think the best argument I've seen against the Elytra is that it tends to lean heavily into over-optimization territory. Why ever build a method of transport when you can fly over everything? Being a sandbox game, people can play how they want, but disincentivizing building has potential to make the worlds of more grindy players feel a lot less special or lived-in and a lot more empty.
I just want to say, RTGame did his entire "Let's Actually Play Minecraft Again" playthrough mainly using his horse for travel and I feel like the series was better because of the lack of the Elytra.
it's a problem of perspective. is minecraft meant to be fast or slow (travel-wise)? if it's supposed to be slow then yes, the elytra are OP. ice boats get a pass due to the hours of setup required. also, there's a difference between building a thousand block long ice highway out of a rare resource and building a gunpowder farm you found on youtube. if it's supposed to be fast, then yes, everything else is essentially useless. why get a horse and saddle or grind stacks of iron and gold for rails, when you can just speedrun the game and get an elytra, then build a creeper farm you yoinked off the internet? one is faster, yields better results, and depending on who you are, is more fun and easier. sprinting is exempt from this list because it is better for short-distance travel.
My only complaint with the Elytra is that because it’s a late game item, every time I play on a server with friends, they all want to rush to The End. That and the fact that if you join later good luck finding a ship that actually still has one. My bigger complaint is the tiny inventory size, seriously, why have they not added any more rows. I know the bundle is supposed to help, but we also just need more space in general. Which is another reason why people rush The End to get shulkers. I just think it’s ridiculous that they’ve maintained the same inventory size while massively increasing the number of unique items.

I feel like something important to mention is that most players don't have elytras. Sure, you can get it quite quickly if you know what you're doing, but most players don't bother, don't know how or aren't good enough
just want to say, we should have trial spawners in end cities and vaults in the ships, so you can get multiple elytras from one ship I think you brought this up before, but it might have been a different youtuber also it could allow infinite shulkers in one city, but it takes thirty minutes for more to come, so infinite shulkers in one city, without them being really really easy to farm
also, to nerf the elytra, they should just make the end harder it's the END, so it should at least be harder than the overworld at night only two really deadly things are shulkers and the dragon, you can hide from endermen with water or a couple blocks I guess the void is deadly, but as long as you don't catapult yourself in, (and avoid endermen using water or blocks above you) you'll be fine
the thing with minecarts is that they *were* originally meant to be the go-to *player* transportation method back when sprinting wasn't a thing. they also tie to the game's aspect of creativity by encouraging you to build the necessary infrastructure for their tracks. I'm not saying the elytra is the devil or anything, but I am extremely happy that mojang wants to improve them in specific.
the times you said "horses are easy early game travel" is higher, than me actually finding saddles, I just farm horses for leather, as I cannot ride them most of the time, and then I reach a point where I have better modes of travel, and horses are useless, so I disagree they are early game, they are late game.
also, something no one never seems to mention is that minecarts are the cheapest way to collect and transport items from chests and hoppers, and thats EXTREMELY useful for any kind of automated farm, so for me theyre better than people give them credit for
No, I don't think elytras are overpowered and need to be nerfed. The "problem" comes from SMPs, where beating the ender dragon is usually one of the first things you do in the game. Then at that point, everyone has an elytra, and transportation isn't fun anymore. You can travel anywhere whenever you want. There's no more point in building all these impressive bridges... massive interconnected minecart tunnels... horses and other animals that we can get emotionally attached to... In fact, why even bother with storage either, if you can hold 27² stacks of items on you at all times via ender chest? That doesn't mean I think shulker boxes should be nerfed.
The only issue I have with the horse is that its too variable and can be too slow. No hunger is a good upside, but the fact that I need to find a saddle in the early game to make the most use of a horse only for said horse to be 2 blocks per second faster feels like Hypixel Skyblock levels of slight improvement after grinding. Sure I can kill it and find another one, but chances are its not going to be much faster than me sprinting and most people probably have a decent food source by that point. I think 10 - 15 m/s is a better range than 6 - 14 m/s at the very least.
I just hope they add some kind of way to view the stats of horses in game without having to do tedious tests after breeding each new horse to see which is best
8:42 I disagree, Blue ice boats are just barely faster, and you would be better off using fireworks and maintaining an elytra than building an entire highway made out of blue ice, which you just said was really hard since you need all these enchantments and ice. The elytra can be hard to find but way easier than building an entire rail system.
Unpopular opinion: The strider is pretty useful for mid-game nether travel. It is the most convenient way to travel across the many lava oceans, as it only requires a fishing rod, warped fungus and a saddle. Unlike bridging, striders are also far faster and less restricted
I personally would suggest some sort of upgraded Version of the Minecart. So a separate second Item with higher speed. Of course it would be more expensive.
Many years ago i made a rollercoaster across the whole world, visiting multiple structures and landmarks. There were many areas where there was a long time of just traveling towards the next structure, in which i added travel through ravines and caves (which made the time between structures longer, 10 year old me wasnt very smart sometimes) But now i could just use an activator rail with a command block to make the minecarts speed up and maybe even launch them through rings in the air or something silly like that to make those empty parts more interesting. Now it has been like 8 years since i did that so im probably not doing it again any time soon, but these changes did remind me of the time i used to do it
I can’t agree with horses being an early game option when saddles only spawn rarely in chests. Now if saddles were craftable with leather then yes they would be an early game option

Me and my buddy installed a mod that changes the speed of minecarts. Its awesome, you can actually use the subway systems you build to get around longer distances efficiently, unless you bump another minecart and get flung the opposite direction
Just to clarify, the devs have said the mine cart changes will likely not come soon as this is just them testing stuff out, that's why they're behind the experimental toggle So don't expect this to come soon or at all

I feel like minecarts should at least go faster than horses, considering how much setup you need to make a railway (perhaps they could add multiple tiers of powered rail to be able to go at different speeds) They also actually were considering nerfing (kind of?) elytra in 1.18 experimental snapshot 7, where rocket boosting an elytra was made to be 20% slower, but the elytra itself would only lose durability when rocket boosting, not when you're just gliding around. Maybe something like that could come back
I don't mind the Elytra being obviously the best way of travel but here's the thing- I don't really start building anything big in a world *until* I got an Elytra because it makes the process so much easier. And that includes railways. But at that point building a minecart track would already be pretty pointless because no one would ever use it. You could still make it for aesthetic purposes but personally I think your effort is better put elsewhere at that point. So yeah considering that a lot of people only have the resources to build a minecart track *after* obtaining an Elytra, I think it'd be cool if its usefulness reflected that.
My new favorite form of travel is water pipes with soul speed, depth strider and dolphin's grace, takes quite a lot of time to set up, but saves me time when getting to the end due to avoiding nether entry (also feels great to not use resources compared to elytra, which might still be a little faster)
A good video, but I disagree with some of the points made. TLDR: make the game harder to beat itself, rather than an elytra nerf. Also significantly buff horses and make minecart changes not be a gamerule. First I think there are a lot of people who make it one of their top priorities when making a new world is to beat the game and get an elytra. I would guess at over 50% of people would use only sprinting and maybe boats for only a small portion of their world time before they get the elytra, then barely use the rest apart from sprinting and niche cases. I think the best thing to do would be make the game harder to beat. Because killing the ender dragon really isn’t hard for most people, so making it a bit more time consuming or more like the actual final boss I think would be cool. I’ve seen the idea of changing the eye of ender recipe to use materials from ocean monuments, ancient cities, nether fortresses, and trial chambers (prismarine, echo shard, blaze powder, wind charge) and the ender pearl. This way you would have to at least go to most of the other “boss-like” places before “beating the game”. This would therefore make the game feel much more special to beat, much harder, and then make the elytra more fair in terms of obtaining. I also think minecarts need a permanent speed increase (not just a gamerule), possibly through new rails or a new minecart (or make the furnace minecart actually have a use). And the main thing that needs to be buffed is horses. Currently there is no reason at all to use a horse after you have an elytra, and getting a saddle and a decent horse just doesn’t really happen before you beat the game. Maybe it should be that you can ride a horse without a saddle, but using a saddle makes it go faster or something. They could also possibly reduce the durability of the elytra or make mending less effective on it, but I think these would just make it more annoying than anything rather than make it more balanced.
7:25 another less talked about use for Minecraft’s is minecart systems for moving items. I’ve got a big system that connects all my farms and not only is it effective but more importantly it’s super cool 😎
I actually use the horse quite a bit when I make maps. All you really need is a horse, saddle, lead, and boat. When you reach a large body of water, leash your horse, get in the boat, and your horse will follow you through water just fine!

It's nearly impossible to build mega bases without an elytra
Instead of nerfing the elytra, I think Mojang just needs to buff the others (especially horses) so that there isn’t a clear best option
In my opinion, they should do both but not as much. Nerf the elytra by a bit and buff everything else by a bit until perfectly balanced.

I think the only problem is the Minecart since it's underwhelming compared to everything else and tedious to set up especially since now in 1.21 you can put leads on boats which BY FAR makes that the best way to transport mobs
agreed, though it still at least holds a niche for when you need to put a mob in a REALLY specific location like in a confined space in a farm or contraption of some kind
They should have it so you can use the leash or chain to link up minecarts, then it could fill a better niche by letting you transport multiple mobs and items in one journey.

this is one of those issues where the very vocal core fanbase represents like 5% of the actual players. I probably have like 1,000 hours of Minecraft and I’ve only ever gotten the Elytra like 2 or 3 times. Ive also never set up any gun powder farms in my life. To a lot of people outside of the hardcore fans, stuff like that isn’t worth learning how to do since it’s not super intuitive through in-game learning and it requires outside research and knowledge. Just my take, and I think you are spitting facts in this video

While I agree that the Minecraft community is overreacting about travel, I do think the minecart needed a buff. Afk travel isn’t really a good niche when said travel is 5x slower than the elytra so instead of waiting, you could just get there faster and takes a lot longer and a lot more resources to set up. Also, I wouldn’t include mob transportation as a plus for travel as that to me feels like a completely different situation (which I will admit, the minecart does excel in). So while I wouldn’t say Minecraft has a travel problem, I’d say the minecart is flawed in Minecraft’s travel system

Horses need a swiming mechanic, adrenaline rush when encountering mobs, making them 20% faster and 30% stronger.
They also need a set base speed of 10 blocks p/s, and 2 blocks jump height. The max being 24 blocks p/s, and 5 blocks height.
Enchantment for their armor as well, so they can actually swim faster, jump further(this needs to be a new mechanic, where horses jumps forward, instead of upwards when in movement.) to clear gaps.
We also need a better pov when riding horses, its really hard to use a bow when all you can see is their heads.
Outside of the swimming thing, I think horses are perfectly fine now. They don't need any complicating bells or whistles.

I'm on the camp that it's definitely unbalanced to some capacity, with the Elytra being pretty overtuned all things considered. But for the others, the new minecart changes look very promising, and I feel like their use in redstone balances themselves out. Ice boats are always nice (lol), and I feel like if the Elytra gets a mild nerf, and horses get a good buff (like the former breeding bug in Bedrock, except moderated), transport could be fully balanced.
What we really need though is the addition of the Batmobile.
The best transport method is clearly Twilight Warp.

You get the elytra after you beat the game. It's a sandbox game and this is a really good reward. It helps with the massive build projects, I really wouldn't want it to get nerfed. Buff everything else instead.

I have never gotten the elytra complaints, I do think horses are kind of mid, but they work really well early game, or in midevil style worlds, like those based on dungeons and dragons. And I would personally argue the boat is the best transportation method due to its acsessability, and how prominant water is in most worlds.

Completely agree with your point about the Elytra at the end, was actually going to leave a comment about it before you mentioned it yourself. Like dude, I went to Hell, fought living fire, fought reject slendermen, crossed half the world by horse or on foot, killed an ENTIRE DRAGON, slowly and precariously bridged across a void of nothingness for potentially thousands of blocks, climbed an entire tower while being bombarded by shots from one of the most annoying enemies in the game, and then even once I’ve got the damn thing I’ve gotta infuse it with magic, beat a magically infused book into it, and then farm copious amounts of sugar cane and kill copious amounts of living bombs before I can even use it effectively, PLUS I’ll need a way to farm xp so I can fix it every once in a while. For all of that work, I’d say outpacing every other method in most areas is plenty alright.

One point about the horse I've heard someone talk about was that it's difficult/inconvenient to navigate dense forests since the leaves would block your path.
The solution mentioned by this same person offered was to make it so that you could ride through only the leaf blocks but with the exception of the tree logs.
I forgot the name of the guy who came up with this idea, so just know that I didn't come up with it.

I would honestly be very pissed if Mojang nerfed the elytra. Yes it is a bit overpowered but what is wrong with that? Every transportation method has their own uses so the system seems fairly decent to me. However, there are a few changes that I think need to be made.
1. Minecarts are way to slow. Just make them faster (happy to see they`re already doing that)
2. Minecart tracks are too expensive to be worth it for early game or long distance travel. By the time you have the farms required to easily make a ton you most likely already have an elytra. Either make them cheaper or let copper be used to craft them as it is easy to get a lot of and would give it a real use.
3. Trying to get a horse over water makes me want to just never use horses again. Skeleton horses kind of fix this problem but they are too rare to count. Either make it to where horses have a long jump that allows them to clear rivers or let them swim while being ridden.
Fun fact: Minecarts were sped up a long time ago in the Legacy Console Editions by 4J. Guess they thought that they needed more speed, even when the more powerful methods of travel were less known or not in the game yet.
I have an idea for balancing transport: make minecarts a bit faster (like maybe 12bps) and allow players to attach minecarts together to make a train-like situation

No. The point of elytra is to be a tradeoff. You can either fly, or have protection. And with the quickswap ability, the chestplate/elytra dichotomy really isn't an issue.

The fact you need to manually switch between the elytra and chestplate is too fundamental a mechanic to change, the whole point is that you're trading safety for better movement. The ominous bottle changing up the dragon fight would be sick though I REALLY like that idea
Or just make the enderdragon egg hatchable and let us have pet dragons. They could be slower than elytra wings but I feel like having to take care of your dragon like you have to take care of your horse would already be enough of a downside.

Also I feel like nerfing the Elytra would remove a good reason to even visit the end which to me just boils down to down to Shulker Boxes are nothing else. (Unless you love PurPur or Endstone).
I like when some things are better than others, it makes it more exiting to get them or talk about. Also, yeah. The elytra is simply really fun.
In a game that's supposed to be about doing whatever you want, being able to fly fast does fit the theme well, and it's just very fun to do
I still get use out of other travel methods though! And while yeah this game does support multiplayer, it's rare for transportation to be something players compete at unless it's the glide minigame, so it's fine for the Elytra to be superior

I don’t think traveling really has a problem. I personally only think that Minecarts and Horses should be buffed, *not* to compete with the elytra/ice boat but to give a bigger incentive to use them.
Horses are good for early game, but they have a handful of cons compared to the one pro, being a little faster than the player, depending on the horse. It takes a *lot* to get a max speed horse, so it would be nice if that was made a bit easier.
As a long time legacy console player, it was shocking to see how slow Minecarts were in other editions. I think Minecarts should be faster than horses, since they take a bit to set up. They are still fun to use tho.

My opinion why I don't really like the fact that elytra is just better than other transportation methods.
Comparing this to wooden pickaxe - netherite pickaxe example there're 2 differences:
1. Wooden pickaxe is used to get netherite pickaxe. You mine stone with a wooden pickaxe, iron with stone pickaxe, etc. So all pickaxes (except for golden) are useful because there're used in a progression. A lot of people don't use anything but sprinting because elytra are not so hard to obtain and horses/minecarts aren't required for them. So many people don't bother making railways or farming the best horse.
2. Horses/minecarts/etc. are a lot more unique. It isn't a big deal if some types of hoe or axe aren't really useful because they are just another type of the same tool. But something like minecarts or horses have a lot of mechanics, a lot of unique gameplay. And they have a big potential to be used more often and I just want this potential to be unlocked, it will make the game more interesting.
Talking about some methods specifically...
I think there is no real problem with horses. A lot of people use them because there're not hard to get. Maybe it's even OK for them to be just worse then elytra, it feels like a fair progression.
But minecarts should get better. Multi-purpose travel methods like elytra already have an advantage of freedom. So things like minecarts or boats on ice should be faster (or have other advantages like an ability to transport mobs). And the boats are faster but minecarts... They're just so much slower than boats on ice and even elytra... I think it won't spoil anything else if minecarts will get more competitive with boats on ice. It will be fair and will give players more to choose from even in late-game.
Elytras are, as I think, too fast. A lot of people don't bother making even ice roads because elytras are fast enough to travel between any places.
BUT there isn't easy solution to this problem.
Someone can say that slowing down elytra is a solution. Yeah, methods requiring making a road to use will become more useful (even if there're slowed down too, as I think should be done in the case of elytra nerf, boost from 16 to 30 blocks/sec is much more useful than from 30 to 60 blocks/sec).
But it will make the main use for elytra - traveling big distances in any directions - much more painful.
It can be fixed only by making overworld more interesting to explore overall... So elytra nerf will be a good option only after a lot of years. Right now it will only cause new problems.

I think the best argument I've seen against the Elytra is that it tends to lean heavily into over-optimization territory. Why ever build a method of transport when you can fly over everything? Being a sandbox game, people can play how they want, but disincentivizing building has potential to make the worlds of more grindy players feel a lot less special or lived-in and a lot more empty.
I just want to say, RTGame did his entire "Let's Actually Play Minecraft Again" playthrough mainly using his horse for travel and I feel like the series was better because of the lack of the Elytra.

if it's supposed to be slow then yes, the elytra are OP. ice boats get a pass due to the hours of setup required. also, there's a difference between building a thousand block long ice highway out of a rare resource and building a gunpowder farm you found on youtube.
if it's supposed to be fast, then yes, everything else is essentially useless. why get a horse and saddle or grind stacks of iron and gold for rails, when you can just speedrun the game and get an elytra, then build a creeper farm you yoinked off the internet? one is faster, yields better results, and depending on who you are, is more fun and easier.
sprinting is exempt from this list because it is better for short-distance travel.
My only complaint with the Elytra is that because it’s a late game item, every time I play on a server with friends, they all want to rush to The End. That and the fact that if you join later good luck finding a ship that actually still has one.
My bigger complaint is the tiny inventory size, seriously, why have they not added any more rows. I know the bundle is supposed to help, but we also just need more space in general. Which is another reason why people rush The End to get shulkers. I just think it’s ridiculous that they’ve maintained the same inventory size while massively increasing the number of unique items.

I feel like something important to mention is that most players don't have elytras. Sure, you can get it quite quickly if you know what you're doing, but most players don't bother, don't know how or aren't good enough
just want to say, we should have trial spawners in end cities and vaults in the ships, so you can get multiple elytras from one ship

only two really deadly things are shulkers and the dragon, you can hide from endermen with water or a couple blocks
I guess the void is deadly, but as long as you don't catapult yourself in, (and avoid endermen using water or blocks above you) you'll be fine

the thing with minecarts is that they *were* originally meant to be the go-to *player* transportation method back when sprinting wasn't a thing. they also tie to the game's aspect of creativity by encouraging you to build the necessary infrastructure for their tracks. I'm not saying the elytra is the devil or anything, but I am extremely happy that mojang wants to improve them in specific.

the times you said "horses are easy early game travel" is higher, than me actually finding saddles, I just farm horses for leather, as I cannot ride them most of the time, and then I reach a point where I have better modes of travel, and horses are useless, so I disagree they are early game, they are late game.
Elytra with a trident with riptide while it’s raining allows you to go hundreds of blocks per second.
Riptide in general too, in water, and even on land by just a water bucket (although you have to mlg when you land)

No, I don't think elytras are overpowered and need to be nerfed.
The "problem" comes from SMPs, where beating the ender dragon is usually one of the first things you do in the game. Then at that point, everyone has an elytra, and transportation isn't fun anymore. You can travel anywhere whenever you want. There's no more point in building all these impressive bridges... massive interconnected minecart tunnels... horses and other animals that we can get emotionally attached to...
In fact, why even bother with storage either, if you can hold 27² stacks of items on you at all times via ender chest? That doesn't mean I think shulker boxes should be nerfed.
The only issue I have with the horse is that its too variable and can be too slow. No hunger is a good upside, but the fact that I need to find a saddle in the early game to make the most use of a horse only for said horse to be 2 blocks per second faster feels like Hypixel Skyblock levels of slight improvement after grinding. Sure I can kill it and find another one, but chances are its not going to be much faster than me sprinting and most people probably have a decent food source by that point. I think 10 - 15 m/s is a better range than 6 - 14 m/s at the very least.

8:42 I disagree, Blue ice boats are just barely faster, and you would be better off using fireworks and maintaining an elytra than building an entire highway made out of blue ice, which you just said was really hard since you need all these enchantments and ice. The elytra can be hard to find but way easier than building an entire rail system.
Unpopular opinion: The strider is pretty useful for mid-game nether travel. It is the most convenient way to travel across the many lava oceans, as it only requires a fishing rod, warped fungus and a saddle. Unlike bridging, striders are also far faster and less restricted

I personally would suggest some sort of upgraded Version of the Minecart. So a separate second Item with higher speed. Of course it would be more expensive.
Many years ago i made a rollercoaster across the whole world, visiting multiple structures and landmarks.
There were many areas where there was a long time of just traveling towards the next structure, in which i added travel through ravines and caves (which made the time between structures longer, 10 year old me wasnt very smart sometimes)
But now i could just use an activator rail with a command block to make the minecarts speed up and maybe even launch them through rings in the air or something silly like that to make those empty parts more interesting.
Now it has been like 8 years since i did that so im probably not doing it again any time soon, but these changes did remind me of the time i used to do it

They also actually were considering nerfing (kind of?) elytra in 1.18 experimental snapshot 7, where rocket boosting an elytra was made to be 20% slower, but the elytra itself would only lose durability when rocket boosting, not when you're just gliding around. Maybe something like that could come back
I don't mind the Elytra being obviously the best way of travel but here's the thing-
I don't really start building anything big in a world *until* I got an Elytra because it makes the process so much easier. And that includes railways. But at that point building a minecart track would already be pretty pointless because no one would ever use it. You could still make it for aesthetic purposes but personally I think your effort is better put elsewhere at that point.
So yeah considering that a lot of people only have the resources to build a minecart track *after* obtaining an Elytra, I think it'd be cool if its usefulness reflected that.
My new favorite form of travel is water pipes with soul speed, depth strider and dolphin's grace, takes quite a lot of time to set up, but saves me time when getting to the end due to avoiding nether entry (also feels great to not use resources compared to elytra, which might still be a little faster)

A good video, but I disagree with some of the points made.
TLDR: make the game harder to beat itself, rather than an elytra nerf. Also significantly buff horses and make minecart changes not be a gamerule.
First I think there are a lot of people who make it one of their top priorities when making a new world is to beat the game and get an elytra. I would guess at over 50% of people would use only sprinting and maybe boats for only a small portion of their world time before they get the elytra, then barely use the rest apart from sprinting and niche cases.
I think the best thing to do would be make the game harder to beat. Because killing the ender dragon really isn’t hard for most people, so making it a bit more time consuming or more like the actual final boss I think would be cool. I’ve seen the idea of changing the eye of ender recipe to use materials from ocean monuments, ancient cities, nether fortresses, and trial chambers (prismarine, echo shard, blaze powder, wind charge) and the ender pearl. This way you would have to at least go to most of the other “boss-like” places before “beating the game”. This would therefore make the game feel much more special to beat, much harder, and then make the elytra more fair in terms of obtaining.
I also think minecarts need a permanent speed increase (not just a gamerule), possibly through new rails or a new minecart (or make the furnace minecart actually have a use).
And the main thing that needs to be buffed is horses. Currently there is no reason at all to use a horse after you have an elytra, and getting a saddle and a decent horse just doesn’t really happen before you beat the game. Maybe it should be that you can ride a horse without a saddle, but using a saddle makes it go faster or something.
They could also possibly reduce the durability of the elytra or make mending less effective on it, but I think these would just make it more annoying than anything rather than make it more balanced.

I actually use the horse quite a bit when I make maps. All you really need is a horse, saddle, lead, and boat. When you reach a large body of water, leash your horse, get in the boat, and your horse will follow you through water just fine!
