I'm just speculating, but I think it's because with Warhammer 3 coming, and potentially shaking up the balance and meta, making a race specific guide might become outdated relatively quickly, and he might be waiting for Total War Warhammer 2 to be more or less done before making a race specific guide.

Very interesting video. Similar thinking also applies to campaign. It's far better to tailor armies to your current campaign enemy than to try to fight all the battles with the same army. Not only do you get efficiency, but you also get variety, which is good for entertainment.
Great guide! I like that you added the little disclaimer that if you want to chuck meta out the window and just be silly that is fine too! I love silly builds in almost all multiplayer games, I just don't expect to win all the time. :) Also, fantastic shot of Boris on the gryphon dodging the dragon breath in the air!
One thing I might add: I think you always need to have a plan which unit is going to do the damage for you. I often see players that bring a variety of units, but none of them are actually good at killing stuff. Any unit type can be a killer, but you just to make sure you have brought one and use it accordingly.

I found this really interesting since I haven’t played total war online since shogun 2. That was a much simpler game since not only being historical meant the battles were simpler (no magic, lords or monsters), there was only one faction so less extreme strengths/weakness but also they could be running anything just as well as you could. I’m tempted to try and get into warhammer online, but it’s much more complicated to learn and I don’t know what faction would be best to do. In shogun I played around the idea of a “core” that was going to win me the game. The rest of the army would be built around supporting that core to allow it to do its job. I normally ran an infantry core so my plan was simply beat the other guys front line to a pulp quick enough and with enough numbers left that they could mop up whatever was left. Couple of cheap archers to threaten key units eg generals and other missiles, spears to protect the back of my infantry from cav and my some light/cav to threaten whatever needed it. I had a pretty good win rate in the lower levels but never played enough to get higher. Occasionally would try a missile or cav core but personally didn’t enjoy or have much success with them.
Personally I hate the fact you know the factions going into a game. When you play a pick up game in tabletop you have no idea what you will face when forming your force (as well as collection limits) so must build a well rounded list for all comers. Having a unlimited pool to draw from and tailor to your enemy faction results in very similar lists.

I think the bigger problem with countering monsters with spear infantry is that the spear infantry gets smashed to bits in the process. Its not a good counter because its a mutual counter.

If the Lord is not a caster you need a caster Hero, if they are a caster and not great in melee you might want some kind of bodyguard Hero. Next you need some infantry, probably like 4-6 units. One or two of those units should probably be elite or monstrous unless you know the enemy faction has such terrible infantry that even your basic units will beat them. Next you want ranged units. Start with just 2. If you're not confident your infantry can hold the line, use ranged cavalry. As for artillery, you need to decide if you want to be offensive or defensive. If you're playing offense and/or probably can't hold the infantry line, don't use artillery and get more ranged cavalry instead. Things are a bit different if your artillery is mounted on a monster that can hold its own against fast cav/hounds (eg Necrofex, Bastilidon Solar Engine, Cygor). Next you want mobility. You need some fast units to chase enemy ranged or defend against enemy fast cav/hounds attacking your ranged, and some stronger cav/monsters to counter enemy cav/monsters. That's basically it. 1-2 Characters (1 caster), 4-6 Infantry, 2-3 Ranged, 4+ Mobility/Monsters. How's that for a template?
Can anyone explain why he said vampire coasts lack armor piercing damage, but when i look at their roster almost every unit besides maybe basic zombies is armor piercing?
Vampire Coast lacks cheap AP units to chew through dwarfs' front lines. While they do have AP, halberd units have a difficult time hitting human-sized units (lower melee attack is made up for by the anti-large bonus) and the monsters are all either magical-attackers (not good against dwarf magic resist) or they're large units which means the dwarfs have a lot of avenues to chew through them. Dwarfs tend to assemble in a box formation and Coast just doesn't have the penetrating power to disrupt the back line. Personally I'd say you want to go for an envelopment formation and stagger handgunners to shoot into the enemy's front lines. If you can get them all fighting in different directions, you can either slip scurvy dogs or fell bats into the artillery without immediately getting stymied by archers/guards, or your own artillery can pick off theirs.
Regarding lords and heroes, how do you decide how many heroes to bring and of which kind? Once I have a caster, I'm never sure whether to bring a hero or another unit.
Heroes are expensive, so you need to have a plan for them if you are bringing more than one. You should always get a caster if you are not playing dwarfs, but maybe you plan in bringing Karl on his steroid chicken to pick apart enemy ranged units and snipe their caster or lord. Empire has no regular flying units, so you should denifentely bring at least a captain into the air with him if you are fighting someone with air capability. You may even commit entirely to the good old "gank squad" plan and bring a whole bunch of flying lords and heroes for a flying hammer to your anvil. Also with the empire example, maybe you got your caster ready, and your are bringin Toody or Franz, but you want your cheap empire infantry to hold for some nice hammer and anvil. Then maybe its worth it to bring a priest with them to get them buffed and avoid them from being squashed too easily. Once you are covered magic wise, just consider the strenghts of your faction heroes and treat them as you would any other unit. Maybe that varghul is worth it for a sneaky surprise when they attack your carronades? Maybe that witch hunter can help out accusing tanky units while getting shots at the big lads. You can't go weong with bringing some heroes as long as you have a plan for them and think it will be woth their value.
What do you recommend for hte campain army building? i usually go around enforcing the skills of the lords that help a particular type of unit or units and stack on units that benefit from said skill, simetimes i clean the house easy sometimes they clean me, I always wondered if Im doing it "right"
Depends on the lord. Some are good for buffing units like that. Others are pure damage dealers, healers, and tanks. I try to use all of them effectively. For example playing Imirik I buff him to be a damage dealer, but still make sure to get the lightning strike trait. That can help him handle large invasions. Just some feedback from my perspective. Only played like 250 hours so far heh.
Obviously things change depending on what bonuses your Lord/faction has and what enemy you're planning to fight. But in general I use a setup of 2/5/7/4/2. 2 Characters - a Lord and a Hero, one of which should be a caster 5 Infantry - basically just there to hold the line 7 Ranged - usually does the bulk of your damage, especially for clearing enemy siege walls 4 Mobility/Monsters - things to chase down enemy ranged/artillery, or block enemy monsters/cav from reaching your ranged 2 Artillery - destroy siege wall turrets, force enemy to attack, and of course just doing damage
....Demi's with spears are better than Demi's with Halberds, you can use them to smack down some infantry and they're ALMOST as good vs Large monsters.
as someone who don't love-love to play skaven defensivly, please-please, by all mean, make your lord-king running straight-straight toward me-me especially on a large-big mount. i swear he won't die before even seeing the frontlane, no chance he will get shreded by jezzail & warpcanon in less than 20 second, YES-YES... Joke aside, on lord safety, if you know their are a lot of sniping unit on the battlefield, you should hide him for a few 30 second at least and throw some distraction. i swear that if you send some cold blood running straight for my jezzail, i will have a much harder time snipping mazdamundi if said jezzail must run for the hill, and take a new postion. it will make the difference between mazdamundi dropping at least a few spell and a charge, and mazdamundi being wipped out before doing a single point of damage. a living lord that didn't use his full potential is alway better than a dead lord. i can garanty you that if you loose a 3000 point lord before it could dish out anything, you might as well surrender. same thing if your spell caster(s) meet an untimely demise before casting any spells.
I quit after my chariot lord died to two volleys of skaven artillery and maybe 1 or 2 matches later my orc lord on a boar died to two canon volleys while zigzagging... That just shouldn't happen
I have 650 hours in this game but I only go up against the AI but today I have watched a bunch of online battles and how to play them so ima play my first game today
I'd suggest bringing some Flagellants to hold your front line forever, something to break the Greenskin Leadership (maybe a Death-Wizard?) and then 2 Handgunners and some Cav. You could also go with Grenade Launchers, they obliterate Greenskin infantry if you can protect them from getting shot. As a Lord I'd say either Franz on Deathclaw to go after characters or Volkmar on the Chariot to kill infantry
@@papabeanguy What you have to realize is that your empire infantry will never be able to beat orc infantry. Instead spend your gold on getting heavy cavalry like empire knights or knights of the blazing sun, and of course some skirmish cavalry
You're unlikely to hold the line so I would probably abandon any idea of using artillery or ranged infantry, and instead go with skirmish cavalry (grenadiers, outriders, pistoliers), Empire Knights to defend them or chase enemy archers, and some KotBS or Demigryphs to hit Large threats or rear charge infantry.
I mean, general strategies like getting your units into good matchups for example still hold true in campaign, but other than that, not really. Campaign is a whole different beast, the ai for the most part is brain-dead and compensates for that by getting stupid amounts of buffs from hard upwards as well as having the player debuffed (general public order penalties, worse melee stats etc.). You can still build your armies like in this guide to be versatile and adaptive and a bit closer to what a "real" army may look like, you can however also spam ranged units and win. Or build mammoth doomstacks. You either cheese everything, or you make it harder for yourself by using "real" army compositions. I prefer the latter as I find it way more fun, but campaign really is a playground, do whatever you like.
All my builds are about "some stupid unit making a lots of cool stuff" like a drooling cript ghouls smashing a trained empire soldiers with they crappy clubs.
disagree. I think there’s plenty of lords that are good on foot with the new mass changes. Malekith with big infantry battalion plus soul stealer has won me so many games
I think there's also an argument for ranged Lords or Heroes, like Princesses. Mounts often make their ranged attacks weaker, and they become very cost effective if you can protect them on foot. Special mention of course to the Skink Chief, who kinda has mounted mobility by default. I know single entity horse units are also still kinda bleh, so if you can't afford the more expensive mount options of a character, foot might well be better than horseback.
My brain: I'm a lizardmen player. I need to pick an adaptable mix of tricky units to support my strategy, and blunt the enemy strategy. I need to run chameleons to deal with our weakness to skirmishers, and have a few interchangeable Slann setups to tweak the same army core for a variety of circumstances as I see fit. Maybe some chaff skinks so I can screen and be all over the map. Don't overinvest in Stegadons and Bastiladons, because the enemy is obviously preparing to deal with single entity monsters. My soul: DINOSAWZ, 3 UNITS OF VELOCIRAPTORS, 2 CARNOSAURS, KROXIGORS, YEEESSS

Counterpicking has killed MP quick battles for me lately.
Players shouldn't be able to see their opponent's faction until they're locked into building their army to prevent counter picking.

Sounds to me like Greenskins would fit closest to what you describe. Norsca, Lizardmen and Beastmen are other possibilities.

I found myself doing the exact opposite of what I did in campaign. I went pretty much full rush. Felt like ranged gets picked apart too easily.
Around 2 units of ranged is usually a good idea, with some cavalry to defend them.

You should always get a caster if you are not playing dwarfs, but maybe you plan in bringing Karl on his steroid chicken to pick apart enemy ranged units and snipe their caster or lord. Empire has no regular flying units, so you should denifentely bring at least a captain into the air with him if you are fighting someone with air capability. You may even commit entirely to the good old "gank squad" plan and bring a whole bunch of flying lords and heroes for a flying hammer to your anvil.
Also with the empire example, maybe you got your caster ready, and your are bringin Toody or Franz, but you want your cheap empire infantry to hold for some nice hammer and anvil. Then maybe its worth it to bring a priest with them to get them buffed and avoid them from being squashed too easily.
Once you are covered magic wise, just consider the strenghts of your faction heroes and treat them as you would any other unit. Maybe that varghul is worth it for a sneaky surprise when they attack your carronades? Maybe that witch hunter can help out accusing tanky units while getting shots at the big lads.
You can't go weong with bringing some heroes as long as you have a plan for them and think it will be woth their value.

What do you recommend for hte campain army building? i usually go around enforcing the skills of the lords that help a particular type of unit or units and stack on units that benefit from said skill, simetimes i clean the house easy sometimes they clean me, I always wondered if Im doing it "right"
Depends on the lord. Some are good for buffing units like that. Others are pure damage dealers, healers, and tanks. I try to use all of them effectively. For example playing Imirik I buff him to be a damage dealer, but still make sure to get the lightning strike trait. That can help him handle large invasions. Just some feedback from my perspective. Only played like 250 hours so far heh.
Obviously things change depending on what bonuses your Lord/faction has and what enemy you're planning to fight. But in general I use a setup of 2/5/7/4/2.
2 Characters - a Lord and a Hero, one of which should be a caster
5 Infantry - basically just there to hold the line
7 Ranged - usually does the bulk of your damage, especially for clearing enemy siege walls
4 Mobility/Monsters - things to chase down enemy ranged/artillery, or block enemy monsters/cav from reaching your ranged
2 Artillery - destroy siege wall turrets, force enemy to attack, and of course just doing damage

as someone who don't love-love to play skaven defensivly, please-please, by all mean, make your lord-king running straight-straight toward me-me especially on a large-big mount. i swear he won't die before even seeing the frontlane, no chance he will get shreded by jezzail & warpcanon in less than 20 second, YES-YES...
Joke aside, on lord safety, if you know their are a lot of sniping unit on the battlefield, you should hide him for a few 30 second at least and throw some distraction. i swear that if you send some cold blood running straight for my jezzail, i will have a much harder time snipping mazdamundi if said jezzail must run for the hill, and take a new postion. it will make the difference between mazdamundi dropping at least a few spell and a charge, and mazdamundi being wipped out before doing a single point of damage.
a living lord that didn't use his full potential is alway better than a dead lord. i can garanty you that if you loose a 3000 point lord before it could dish out anything, you might as well surrender. same thing if your spell caster(s) meet an untimely demise before casting any spells.
I quit after my chariot lord died to two volleys of skaven artillery and maybe 1 or 2 matches later my orc lord on a boar died to two canon volleys while zigzagging... That just shouldn't happen

I really struggle to fight any rush army (greenskins a lot) as empire. Any tips?
I'd suggest bringing some Flagellants to hold your front line forever, something to break the Greenskin Leadership (maybe a Death-Wizard?) and then 2 Handgunners and some Cav. You could also go with Grenade Launchers, they obliterate Greenskin infantry if you can protect them from getting shot.
As a Lord I'd say either Franz on Deathclaw to go after characters or Volkmar on the Chariot to kill infantry

@@papabeanguy What you have to realize is that your empire infantry will never be able to beat orc infantry. Instead spend your gold on getting heavy cavalry like empire knights or knights of the blazing sun, and of course some skirmish cavalry
You're unlikely to hold the line so I would probably abandon any idea of using artillery or ranged infantry, and instead go with skirmish cavalry (grenadiers, outriders, pistoliers), Empire Knights to defend them or chase enemy archers, and some KotBS or Demigryphs to hit Large threats or rear charge infantry.
Just focus on cav and skirmish. Best if you dont use inf at all.

I’m sure you could tweak some of the ideas to campaign, but it is multiplayer orientated
I mean, general strategies like getting your units into good matchups for example still hold true in campaign, but other than that, not really.
Campaign is a whole different beast, the ai for the most part is brain-dead and compensates for that by getting stupid amounts of buffs from hard upwards as well as having the player debuffed (general public order penalties, worse melee stats etc.).
You can still build your armies like in this guide to be versatile and adaptive and a bit closer to what a "real" army may look like, you can however also spam ranged units and win. Or build mammoth doomstacks.
You either cheese everything, or you make it harder for yourself by using "real" army compositions. I prefer the latter as I find it way more fun, but campaign really is a playground, do whatever you like.

My uncle gave us infinite money so I build a dragon doom stack and he not like that but what did he expect

disagree. I think there’s plenty of lords that are good on foot with the new mass changes. Malekith with big infantry battalion plus soul stealer has won me so many games
I think there's also an argument for ranged Lords or Heroes, like Princesses. Mounts often make their ranged attacks weaker, and they become very cost effective if you can protect them on foot. Special mention of course to the Skink Chief, who kinda has mounted mobility by default.
I know single entity horse units are also still kinda bleh, so if you can't afford the more expensive mount options of a character, foot might well be better than horseback.
My brain: I'm a lizardmen player. I need to pick an adaptable mix of tricky units to support my strategy, and blunt the enemy strategy. I need to run chameleons to deal with our weakness to skirmishers, and have a few interchangeable Slann setups to tweak the same army core for a variety of circumstances as I see fit. Maybe some chaff skinks so I can screen and be all over the map. Don't overinvest in Stegadons and Bastiladons, because the enemy is obviously preparing to deal with single entity monsters.
