When a violinist plays BACH on a ukulele

  • If you're a violinist and you tune your ukulele like a violin, can you instantly play classical tunes? Let's head out into the backyard and find out!
    In this video, I'm playing on both a soprano and a concert size ukulele. The strings are Aquila Nylgut 30U strings in GDAE tuning. They're meant for soprano ukuleles, but they work fine on a concert size as well. (And if I'm honest: I think they sound better on a concert!)

    Hi Marijke - I only play melodies on the my ukuleles. I don't play chords - only melodies. I too play both the soprano and concert ukuleles. And I prefer to play the concert ukulele. It sounds more like a guitar than the soprano ukulele, especially when I play melodies. 👍 😊 🎻

      I prefer the concert too. I wanted to play melodies too, but regular uke tuning throws me off because I'm used to violin tuning. 😉

      @@MarijkeViolin I use the open strings meant for the ukulele G-C-E-A. But you still have me beat. You play chords and I don't on the ukulele. And I only play the violin in 1st position within the first 2 and 1/4 octaves. 😉 🎻♫

    Beautiful
    I used to do the same because of your idea to retune a ukulele. but I use a pick without a pinky resting on the ukulele for better sound like mandolin playing

    Not judging, just some constructive advice here:1) you would really benefit from using your index and middle fingers in your picking hand for more agility, but with your current posture that would be really awkward, so I suggest trying to hold your ukulele lover, so your fingers more naturally fall closer to a perpendicular position in relation to your strings.2) For eliminating string buzz you might try fretting a note closer to the fret and pressing the string harder (not unnecessarily, and definitely without tension).2.1) Be aware of the direction at which you pluck the strings, so they vibrate parallel to the fretboard, not against it.2.2) It is also possible, that the instrument simply isnt built for the thicker strings and they will buzz against the other frets anyways in which case you could ask a luthier to adjust the string height accordingly. (But I think its most likely the way you fret notes at fault here) 3)Also I am not aware if you still use the same fingering for that weird D shape in violin tuning, but its not nearly as awkward when you finger it with your second(on the g string) and third(on the e string) fingers. I am neither a ukulele player or a violinist(but I have minimal experience with both), so you are free to take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I must say that I am a cellist(twelfth year since I started my lessons) who plays guitar and bass, so I hope my advice comes in handy..
    p.s. Also, if my english sounds dodgy at places, bare in mind, that it is not my primary language

      Thanks for the advice! This was just for fun, I tuned both ukuleles back to regular tuning again. But I am planning on getting a mandolin soon and learn proper technique with video tutorials. ☺️

    OK, after seeing your video I just today bought G, D, A, E strings for my soprano uke!

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, nice! I switched back to regular tuning again and I noticed it resonates much better. There's apparently a reason why a ukulele is tuned like it is.

    • @RonLWilson
      @RonLWilson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarijkeViolin I don't doubt that at all but for me having to learn both uke and mando/violin fingering is a bit much so I might still give that a try.

    • @RonLWilson
      @RonLWilson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am now thinking of going to plan B and tuning in fourth, A, D, G, C having in a former life long long ago played a bit of bass guitar and really liking that tuning. This will drop that top E string to a C and maybe thus will be a bit more resonant. I am not so sure tuning the E string down to a C will work though but maybe it is worth a try.

    • @RonLWilson
      @RonLWilson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BTW, I just yesterday got my new strings and swapped them out on my uke tuning it in fourths and am really liking it. I actually did a little demo that I uploaded on my TH-cam channel to demonstrate that.
      So a big thank you for your video that inspired me to do that!

    Marijke, are you still playing the viola ? What are your best two instruments right now? I’m assuming Violin is your number one…

    I have also tuned my soprano uke (Kala) like a mandolin, and am about to do so also with my concert uke. Ukes are inexpensive instruments and mandos cost a lot like violins. Also mandoes have very high tension steel strings that can shred your fingers big time. I just want it to noodle around on it. My thought is that I would pick out melodies on one, and use the other for chord backup. Maybe do 1st violin part on my violin, and second on my soprano uke, with the chords on the concert. I am also learning how to record tracks on Audacity. Will see how it goes. I think any kind of Baroque music sounds great on the mando-uke, also Klezmer tunes!!

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Mandolins are indeed expensive, although I'd like to have one. I really enjoy playing melodies on the ukulele, but chords sound less full with the GDAE tuning, in my opinion, mainly because of the high E string.

    I know it's hard to play in a neck with frets.
    You could record two different lines in each one.
    How about it?
