How can there only be one nurse on staff?!! I worked in NICU in USA, there were so many RN’s that such acts would have been seen and scrutinized by colleagues (who know to watch out for all babies in the unit, not just the 1 or 2 they are assigned to for their shift! Truly a “village” concept when taking care of preemies or ill newborns!!). I admit to not know much at all about England’s national healthcare system.

It works well in the countries other hospitals. This was not a large open area, these babies were in different stages of their care. The newest borns were in nursery one, with only 2 or 3 incubators. Nursery two was for babies who were off oxygen but still being tube fed and nursery three was purely observation for babies who ready to go leave the unit. Not all the babies had been born at the hospital and likewise, sometimes babies who were born at the hospital needing ICU were shipped out due to neo natal being full. A very small unit to be fair. The whole point of having designated babies means that not ALL nurses would be in the frame when this happens.
