    This mic is an excellent kick drum and bass mic - that´s it. Forget it for VO or vocals in general. Maybe it would work on Tuba, Bass-Clarinet and Contrabassoon as well.

    This is indeed almost phenomenon in kick drum with flat settings (you can find great kick drum mic comparison video on yt) and I liked it on your voice with neutral settings yes it can be little dull but I think it sounds natural

    Is it usual for mic to have such a broad usage potential, and still be good?
    Should we be looking for mics with wide multi purpose range?
    Or, figuring out the best option for each use case, & focusing on the "best bang for buck" to
    meet the specific needs?
    I get the idea of buying with a pair of usages in consideration. Such as picking a mic for both singing & playing acoustical guitar.
    But doesn't a "Kick Drum Mic" & a "Spoken Word Mic" seem to far afield from each other to operate with a "one mic for everything" philosophy?

    Owning this mic I have only used it on kick drum, had no clue how it would sound as a VO mic before this video. Yeah it's a super amazing mic on kick drum! :)

    It's a bass drum mic... and the broadcast thing it because of its great low end... Nothing in this review shows what's the purpose of this mic... It's great on bass drum, toms, bass, brass and deep voices...

    I love the Telefunken logo as well, it remind me a lot the Artdeco style logos, I actually found that your logo is quite similar to that style of illustration, past life memories dude? Have you tried to test vintage mics real vintage mics from ebay?

    I have this mic. I never used it for voice-it is a bass drum mic and an awesome one. MADE IN THE USA! I like the high boost!

    It is amazing that a Telefunken mic can be purchased for so little money. That’s an entirely new phenomenon. This very strange product isn’t a very good representative of the brand.
    These days, most will be unaware of the history of Telefunken, which was a major player in the very highest end of audio products of all kinds. Telefunken was an engineering company pre-dating television that did the research and development for cost-no-object German state radio. To give an idea of their importance, the unparalleled Neumann U47 and AKG C12 microphones were branded as Telefunken in many European markets. In both of these microphones, the tube is made by Telefunken. Near-priceless 60+ year old Telefunken tube microphones are still in use today in studios around the globe and I believe some hand built models are still being produced. I don’t blame you for finding some rare sticker love for that iconic logo.

    One of the sound engineers my band works with used this on saxophone. He said it sounded incredible but I wasn't impressed by what I heard in the monitor. I tried playing my flugelhorn and it was alright but there are a number of mics I would prefer. I didn't even bother playing my trumpet into it.
    btw, the sound engineer knows his stuff and we normally agree.. just not on this one.

  • @wizardlywonder1336

    It's known as a kick mic by pros. It's fabulous on the kick drum. Phenominal. The mid-forward and 'tinny' sound on the human voice and (god forbid) electric guitars, is happening because they don't posess the low frequencies of a bass drum. Human voice and guitars don't have that kind of low frequency, so of course this mic is lacking it on those subjects.

  • @MikeBroderick33

      It could be that the mic just doesn’t flatter my voice but when I put it in my “mic bank” Logic session, it did not stack up at all.

    • @MikeBroderick33

  • @FunForChu
    @FunForChu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The fact that the mic has the word "Fun" in the middle of the mic is worth the $400 for me.... (being sarcastic of course 😜). In all seriousness, never heard of this company, but I like their sticker as well. Haha

    hey bandrew, great video, i just wanted to know, which one do you prefer, samson q2u or the c01u pro? in terms of audio quality

    • @insanejughead
      @insanejughead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The C01U Pro will sound more natural (because condenser) but will need more editing due to increased sensitivity. The Q2U will be more usable for louder environments as well as where you can't control as much of your surroundings.

    • @fineresolve1540
      @fineresolve1540 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks for your reply, does the q2u still sound great when being used 10 cm away from my mouth (usb option btw)

    • @insanejughead
      @insanejughead 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fineresolve1540 Yes, it'll still sound great at that distance. The benefit to it being a dynamic is that it won't easily pick up the noises in your environment (refrigerator, a/c, neighbor's dog, room reverb, etc...)
      Most dynamics sound their best at 5-20cm from the sound source, for vocals. They start to sound boomy when your lips are nearly touching the grill. Dynamics are great to have, I recommend getting this one because it is so versatile.

      Is it usual for (good) audio gear to be discontinued, without a "newer model replacement" following such a move?

    • @General_Puffball
      @General_Puffball 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@libertyDude1775 It's certainly unusual, but in this case I think it can be explained by the fact that Beyer has used its recent rebrand as an opportunity to consolidate its line-up.The M99 was well received, but it didn't make much of an impact on the broadcast market-probably because of the high price point. Beyer has other perfectly good kick mics, so it looks like a decision was taken to admit defeat with the M99, and focus on them instead.
      Incidentally, Bandrew: the Earthworks SV33 sounds like a bit of a spoken word dark horse:

    The kick eq makes this mic sound terrible, as far as I can tell with my Headphones. The high boost itself instead makes it sound way better. Neutral mode is O.K. The noise pickup is terrible as well, sadly. I wished a Telefunken branded mic would be the epitome for quality, but apparently Telefunken's golden times, between the early to mid 20th century, are over.
